Elite: Dangerous PS4 launch date announced: June 27th

Via London SE

Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV; "Frontier" or the "Company"), a leading independent creator of video games, is pleased to announce that Elite Dangerous will make its debut on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system on 27 June 2017.

Digital pre-orders are available from today in Europe and will be available later this month in the United States.

In addition to a worldwide digital launch there will be simultaneous availability in leading physical retail stores in major territories of the Elite Dangerous Legendary Edition boxed disc for both PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.

David Walsh, Chief Operations Officer of Frontier Developments, said:

"We are delighted to be bringing our acclaimed multiplayer space epic to the PlayStation 4 - new players on the platform are joining at an exciting time in the Elite Dangerous galaxy after the recent first alien encounters in-game.

PlayStation 4 represents a substantial additional audience for Elite Dangerous. Console players are rapidly embracing direct digital online distribution, but currently physical discs still make up a significant proportion of total videogame console software sales. We have therefore partnered with physical retail specialist 'Sold Out' on a disc edition for both PlayStation4 and Xbox One, which will be available simultaneously with the PlayStation4 digital release."

They added the release date to the PS4 trailer, but otherwise it's the same as the PS4 trailer from the other month.

Can't wait for the DF comparisons, especially on Pro. This game is incredible on PC.

Hopefully this isn't considered port begging, but I'd totally double-dip if this supported PSVR in the future.

While the PS4 version doesn't share the same account as PC (X1 is the same way, FWIW), it does take place in the same "universe". The background simulation, factions, faction/system influence, etc. are all shared across all three platforms.

They haven't strictly ruled out cross-account and cross-play, but it's not happening currently.

How close is it to complete now? It's been in development for some time now...also keen to know the price.

If the Pro patch is good I'll probably get it regardless...NMS didn't really scratch the space itch.

Excellent.

There's no mention of PSVR support, so it looks like people are assuming that it won't be in?

It's still geting major updates but they plan to keep those going for years.

Current game is pretty great if you're a space fan and don't mind grinding.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees, finally!

Jumping in day one.

VR support would naturally prompt me to buy PSVR, but I don't see this happening on base PS4 and I doubt Sony would allow them to make it Pro-only.

There was no way PS4 was getting VR support. Elite is pretty well optimizing but it's still pretty demanding in its own ways.

Hope for a PS4 Pro patch down the line.

As someone mentioned, they basically have a 10 year gameplan, or at least that's what they say. It's really a matter of jumping in when you feel it's worth it.

I made this scientific chart a few months ago:

bPD8cT0.png

Lots of players get burnt out after the first 100 hours or so. The light blue line is the happy path, where if you are just in love with the core gameplay mechanics (the flight/combat model IS fantastic), you'll continue to be happy playing. It's a game that I come back to a few times a quarter to see what is new.

You'll see plenty of complaints in the OT, but it should be noted we've all pretty much played for hundreds of hours at this point. The early game is fantastic, but the end game becomes more of a repetitive grind with the only "endgame" being able to purchase larger and better ships.

No one doubts that more content is coming, and regularly--we just have real concerns about the direction of the game and if it's going to continue being "a mile wide, an inch deep".

I still recommend it. It's still one of my favorite games of this gen. It's just extremely frustrating sometimes--lots of it boils down to "do the devs even play their own game?"

Nice, been waiting for this.

Base game is £19.99 with the Commander Deluxe Edition priced at £39.99 (UK)

The Commander Deluxe Edition is the ultimate way for new Commanders to experience what Elite Dangerous has to offer. The bundle includes the base game Elite Dangerous, Elite Dangerous: Horizons and the Commander Pack, which grants access to a collection of items with which to customize your ship.

If this ever gets PSVR support I may never buy another game... my hopes aren't high though.

No VR no buy.

I already own it on PC and I'm only gonna buy it PS4 version gets VR since I own a PSVR. I've played it on my PC using my PSVR a few times and while it's nice I would have liked some native PSVR support.

So the base game comes w/o the addons?

I'll probably double-dip, playing this with a controller on the big screen is what I wanted for a long time. I hope they've worked out a good control scheme.

Yup just base game only (Season 1) for £19.99.

Elite Dangerous on PlayStation®4 FAQ - Frontier Support

For people who already own this on other platforms, is the deluxe version really worth an extra £20?

thanks.

Will Elite Dangerous support PlayStation®VR?

Elite Dangerous is a flagship VR game on PC so of course, VR is important to us. It's definitely something we're looking into, but we have nothing to announce for launch.

interesting - please, please make it happen.

Ah, it seems you can play without a Plus subscription. I already have one but I did think that this would maybe need one. Obviously, you only get the single player game.

Huh--interesting. How does this work? The "single player" is just a Solo mode but you're still connected into the same persistent universe/background simulation, but you only play with NPC/AI. No PvP.

does it have objectives? or is it a "create your own fun" sort of game. like, if i choose to be a space pirate, do i get to do pre-set piratey things? or is it a case of me just floating around space until i find someone and then i just choose to be a douche (pirate)

Currently, it's more "create your own fun". Combat has the most depth, by far. Lots of different ways to play and different conflicts to participate in. It's also one of the best ways to make money, outside of exploits or high-volume trading/smuggling.

There are regular community goals that give more structure to what is possible in the universe (i.e., in a combat CG, you can sign up for either side, and whichever side wins, can gain influence in a system, alter the galactic storyline, etc.) as well as missions, but no over-arching paths, yet. They want to add full career progression in the military, navy, etc.

The game really has three core mechanics: combat, trading, exploration. Most everything else are facets or variations of these three (i.e., there is mining, but that's essentially trading, an exchange of goods for money; for exploration, you can also explore planets, collect resources, etc., but again, you're mostly just flipping those resources for money, except for materials, which are used to engineer/craft better ship modules).

Piracy is definitely an area that needs to be built up. It's a little too risky right now, with arguably too little reward. You can align yourself with a power and earn credits with them by raiding another faction's traders, but otherwise, yeah, you go out and be a douche pirate all by yourself.

Mostly the latter, though you can take up some missions like smuggling, assassinations etc.

But this isn't a story driven game.

No word on PSVR has me very worried, I was hoping that was what was keeping the PS4 version in development for so long

I'm really interested in this since NMS didn't quite scratch the itch the way I had hoped. Is this space gameplay only or can you land on planets and explore on the ground?

It's been complete and out of and kind of Early Access for a few years now...

It just still gets regular updates.

Gonna wait for the Commander's Edition to go on sale. The game went on sale all the time on Xbox and I already bought it there.

Is still game overly complicated for a filthy casual like me?

It has a very real learning curve. It's worth it, however. Best space sim flight mechanics and feel on the market by FAR.

You and me both!

Elite Dangerous is one of those "come to Jesus" moments in VR. For me it is *the* daily reason to own a Vive (and Rift). I do hope it launches as PSVR compatible for at least the Pro. It is amaze.

Play this game. It has such a cool spectrum of ways to play it. Also, I recommend the Commander's Edition, if they have that at a decent price.

Why can't we have cross play PS4-xbox-PC

It's something they want, but is complicated. For one, the lack of agreement between MS and Sony for crossplay.

Otherwise, I think it's likely a matter of resources. They haven't shut it out completely.

I wouldn't be surprised in shared accounts (i.e., play on PC, hop off, and resume playing the same account on Xbox) comes before or instead of that. I would love crossplay, though. It's all speculation at this point, TBH.

Haha, well, the game hasn't gotten any simpler :p But there are more quality-of-life improvements. Not sure when you last played, but there are really good, voice-acted tutorial missions now that should help, too.
