REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, the Nintendo Switch system was the best-selling video game hardware in the month of April with more than 280,000 units sold. This is the second month in a row that Nintendo Switch has led the pack in video game hardware sales, following a record-breaking launch in March. April sales of Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems (more than 68,000 units sold) combined to make up almost half of all hardware sales across all dedicated video game systems.

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game was the top-selling video game in April with more than 460,000 physical units sold. With digital sales added, the total is more than 550,000 units. Making this number more impressive is the fact that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched on April 28, which only accounts for two days’ worth of sales in the reporting period, which cut off on April 29.

*Data regarding physical sales of games are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

Noice, well done Nintendo. I've finally caved and decided to get one. Just waiting for it to be back in stock.

That's quite a drastic cut in supply. Didn't Japan get 250K in April. Don't think that's a fair distribution of units considering market sizes.

So given the low stock is it cromulent to say that, if it becomes widely available to purchase anytime soon, then it maybe hasn't done as well as people predicted?

Anecdotally my walmart got a shipment of 2x switch since launch and none since. We get DAILY calls asking if its in stock. 280k is almost certainly because stock is streched very thin.

I can never tell who is for real and who is just fucking with everyone in these threads.

An issue that isnt limited to Nintendo threads, LOL.

OT: Between this and the weirdness with weekly JP sales, we really have no sense of what the ceiling is for Switch sales. People are buying up any stock available. The thirst is REAL.

Terrible numbers. I doubt scarcity is THAT of a problem. I don't think Is logical to think Nintendo is shipping a similar number of consoles in JPN and US.

I wonder if the stock issues have anything to do with Japan Display's recent reported financial issues. That would really be a shame if there are big issues with ramping up production.

I for one am still totally convinced the Switch doesn't even exist. I've yet to see a single Switch in the wild!!! It's a conspiracy!!!

They are clearly selling everything they have, given the lack of availability. The only way to gauge demand is therefore to take note of when availability increases because at the point, demand has been met.

I remember people saying in the switch stock thread that they were becoming more easily stocked in Germany at the biggest retailer now.

Maybe it's improved by now for May numbers but who knows.

You think demand fell off a cliff after a record March launch with well reported stock issues? Okay then.

How did the 3DS do in it's second month in the US for comparison?

How does the drop compare to XB1 and PS4's second month?

Those are less comparable because those were both holiday launches. The companies would know to increase production for that season far more than increasing production for March-April. Nintendo basically can't decide to do massive production for April and then also for the holiday season in that same year.

3DS would be a more interesting comparison, since that was a March launch too.
