Disgaea 5 Complete Demo Now Available on the eShop

NetMapel

Guilty White Male Mods Gave Me This Tag
So if I play this demo and like it, go out and buy the physical cart for this game, I can continue from where I left off in the demo?

lol, I just realized that the description of the game on the eShop directly mentions containing content that was originally DLC for the PlayStation 4 release.

It's so strange for me to see PS4 directly referenced on the eShop.

Game looks so nice undocked. Grabbing this at launch, really excited to dig into it. This and FE Echoes are gonna destroy me.

This is one of those games which appeals to me a lot based on its gameplay and systems, but the whole anime vibe and artstyle throw me off instantly.

What I would give for a game like that but with a grittier, Vagrant Story-esque style... *Sigh*
A gritter style wouldn't fit the game as it's basically a wacky cartoon. Even the way the game's systems are implemented involve a fair bit of absurdity that a more serious art style wouldn't be able to get through.

I know this is a dumb question (and potentially people will not know), but are saves on Switch region locked? So if the demo would allow carrying the save over into the full game, would a US demo save to EU full game not be possible?

It'd be nice if the web frontend for the eShop would let you download the demo to your Switch. Or if it does, I sure as hell can't find it.

Super into the game, but it's really making me want a FFT port and/or a new entry and/or an Advance Wars game.

dat awe when the last Disgaea game you ever touched is Disgaea 2 and then you see these sprites in 5 :O

Since you can save and the save will transfer over to the main release it makes sense.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

Anywho, so happy to finally play Disgaea 5 on the go!
I stopped D5 on PS4 a few chapters in, not out of disinterest, but kept putting it off for other things.
The convenience of D5 on Switch really ensures I'll play through it in full this time (which means when done, 3 will be the only one of 1,2,3,4,5 that I will have not played through full >_>)

Clearly we're not meant to take the story and characters seriously but could they at least have made them tolerable? I can't decide who I want to strangle more, the unbearably chipper lady with the HOHOHOHOHO laugh or the penguins who end every sentence with dood.

Gameplay seems fun, though. Very in-depth.

Is Takehito Harada still the character designer in this? Killia and Seraphina don't really look like his style it feels like.

I didn't think I'd be super into this game for a number of reasons, but I've sunk a couple of hours into the demo now and I'm completely hooked. Looking forward to when the full game releases, this is a ton of fun!

I really like the gameplay and variety of options so far but the characters aren't really my archetypal cup of tea. I hope it'll get better as the game progresses or that the game's zaniness will start clicking with me.

I'm enjoying the way you can move and attack in different phases. The team attack ability adds a lot to positioning your squad.

The PS4 Demo most certainly allowed you to continue your save in the final game.

The demo was the almost the entire first chapter of the game.

Edit: If anyone has any questions in regards to the mechanics to the game. Don't hesitate to ask me questions.

Any beginner tips? It'll be my first time playing the series, already downloaded the demo but haven't started it yet. Good to know that the progress will carry over to the full game.

Beginner's tips.

Since the demo is only chapter 1 you are extremely limited on what you can do in regards to exploiting the game's mechanics to the fullest.

A major thing you don't have access to is the Cheat Shop which isn't unlocked until Chapter 3 so a lot more grind will be involved but some of the key points that can be taken advantage of in the demo is as follows.

Experience is only earned for kills. So you can use a stronger character to soften a strong enemy and let a weaker character do the finishing blow to get the experience.

Healing spells also provide experience based on a factor that the more damaged healed the larger the experience earned.

Using items also grants experience that is 1/8th required to level up. Meaning having a character use items 8 times will always get the equivalent experience necessary to gain one level.

Stick with a small elite group of your favorite characters for the story campaign. Try not to spread your resources too thin on a larger group but rather focus your strength to at least 6 to 10 of your favorite units.

You can stack humanoid units on top of each other to form a tower. A tower can be used for mobility purposes but mainly for a very powerful attack that requires 6 or more units which is called Tower Laser. You need to repeatedly use Tower Attacks to unlock the Tower related skills, eventually Tower Laser will be learned.

Also all characters in a tower will earn experience when they participate in a tower attack.

There is a Quest NPC in the Base that has a random quests to earn some easy money and items but there are also special quests to unlock new classes in the game. If you do all of these quests you can unlock every generic humanoid class except one.

Monster units can be used as springboards to maximize movement without wasting a monsters turn. Throwing an ally unit at an ally monster unit will cause the human unit to bounce off the monster's head in the direction the monster is facing. The number of spaces moved is based on the monster's throw stat. After doing this you can then cancel the monsters movement to send them back to the base panel or have them do something else.

Monsters can also transform into a weapon doing their Magichange ability when standing next to a humanoid. Magichange lasts three turns. Each monster type has a specific weapon they can turn into. A Prinny can turn into a Sword for example.

Also each character has specialized passive abilities tied to their class type called Evilities. The Prinny for example has an effect which causes them to do 50% of their HP as damage when thrown but are KO'd.

A good method to get an early boost in the demo is using the monster merging mechanic. Two enemy units thrown into each other will cause them to combined, levels included. For example a level 6 enemy and a level 4 enemy thrown into each other will create a level 10 enemy. The predominate new enemy is based on the enemy with the higher stats, in this case the level 6 enemy has priority. You can throw all of the enemies into each other on a single map to make a super strong enemy not normally able to fight in the demo but defeating it will get you a lot of experience and level beyond what can normally done. The only exception to this is Prinnies. Throwing a Prinny will always result in it exploding be mindful of this.

Check the first two posts in the OT - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1120694 There is a comprehensive guide for the second post but there is a ton of useful information also in the OT itself.

I have a revised guide written up that I plan to post when the Switch OT goes up as well, but it contains a lot more tips that can't be taken advantage in the demo.

Ugh dammit. I had told myself I probably wouldn't get this game since I've spent way too much money on the switch since it launched, but two hours into the demo and I'm hooked. Seems like a quality game, story seems cheesy but in a way that I actually enjoy it haha. Even the music with vocals I was like... Ugh... Then ten minutes in I'm humming along and loving the cheesiness of it and the bad vocals hahaha. Seems like there's way more than enough things to have to master as far as battle goes, overwhelming right now but seems like there's time to learn all the abilities and stats before shit gets serious.

Yeah I'm gonna get this. Minecraft was probably a mistake though. Oh well.

If the music in the base become grating to you there is a Moth NPC that collects all of your data. Talk to him and you can change the base panel music to anything you want, as long as you listened to the track at least once in the game.

As for the demo being overwhelming...to make an analogy. You just put your toe into a puddle. Just you wait. There is a ocean you'll encounter soon enough.

Although thankfully Disgaea 5 is the most refined and streamlined installment in the entire series. All for the good.

Using Disgaea 1 for example. Monsters were almost useless. No ability to throw, and no specialized skills like Humanoids have with weapons. Also throwing in D1 was restricted to a single line and not being able to do so diagonally. Also movement was greatly improved. In D5 you can move to a spot, if you don't like it just highlight the character and move to another spot. In D1 you had to totally cancel your entire action just to pick another spot on the grid. I think I'll stop here. I can literally go on and on on each games mechanics in this entire series. When it comes to Disgaea I am a maniac. It's all numbers and mechanics and exploiting the systems.

People may be turned off by the anime aesthetic, but dwell into it and there is madness of numbers, systems on top of systems, with a depth that few other SRPGs barely even compare to.

I wish I had known all of this when I first started (some of it I still didn't know). Yeah, this will be great fro the OT.

Wow, that's a lot of information. I'll be referring to it when I play the demo and the game. Thanks.

That information really only applies to the demo.

I have a much more detailed information dump readily available when the Switch OT goes up.

I just hope some folks aren't scared off from the game with the amount of information I'm going to provide. The last thing I want is to give the impression the game is insurmountable. My Disgaea write up is meant to make the game more easy to digest for newcomers and still be relevant to even veterans of the series.

No it's great and I appreciate it. I play Monster Hunter so I am used to games with complex mechanics.
