Pokémon: Magikarp Jump - Mobile game on staggered release

How has there not been a thread yet?

This game sneak launched in Italy yesterday and I've been covering it for my site.

The premise is simple. You have to catch a Magikarp, then feed and train it before taking on leagues where your Magikarp has to jump the highest. If it loses, you need to get a new Magikarp and start over.

Microtransactions come in the form of Diamonds used to buy Support Pokémon and improve other elements such as make training and berries stronger

That UI aesthetics remind me of those spam games that pop up on facebook :/ Looks like a bad rip off, cant believe it's official.

Spent the last 5 hours grinding up a Magikarp to get past the levels my last one lost me at, and I ended up just being able to get past one level and then it failed and I have to start over

Sounds like aweful mechanics. Looks like this will be one of the very very few Pokemon games I won't play.

This game is a pleasing game, but the realisation hit me that it's the epitome of mobile gaming.

It actually has no skill whatsoever. You sit and feed your Magikarp, then compete in the leagues which are essentially Top Trumps where if your value is higher, you win or you lose. Then rinse and repeat. There's nothing that actually requires your attention or control. It's just mindless raising of a Magikarp.
