ARMS Control Schemes

Edit: A preview from EDGE states that you can also punch using the triggers when using the Pro Controller/Joycon Grip.

Slot the Joy-Cons into a grip peripheral, hand over one of the controllers to a friend, or pick up a Pro Controller, and Arms starts to feel a little more familiar. Punches can be thrown using the triggers, or two of the face buttons - jump and dash are mapped on to the other two. You click the left stick to guard.

Seems like only motion controls allow you to move and curve your punches at the same time, if I'm reading this correctly.

I'm all for motion controls. Looks great. Although I will try the traditional controls to see how it works in handheld mode, too.

Oh no... I usually unbind things from left stick click because I press it by mistake when there's a lot of action.

hopefully, we can configure it. The pro controller has more button and I don't like the guard on press left stick.

Not sure I like pressing the left stick to guard. Should of made it one of the shoulder buttons. Hopefully I can change it

is there any reason why they dont use the right analog stick?

same for left trigger

how do you even curve punch then?

Hasney

I wouldn't worry about right stick right now. they're not showing curving on the dual joycons either so I wouldn't assume it's unused.

Looks like the binding have been done with only the single joycon gameplay in mind.

Left triggers are not used and the guard on the stick are so stupid...

Left trigger is unused on the pro controller but guard is mapped to CLICKING THE LEFT STICK??? What the actual fuck

The logic appears to be keep the same control scheme between all the non motion control formats.

That, however is a very stupid decision. Guard on the trigger makes more sense, I agree. Crippling the other control schemes so that single joycon is on par is a worrying trend for them to start.

Because single joycon does not have a second analog stick.

so they gutting 4 options because one sub paar one exist?

oh boi

pretty much this

This has to be the most cumbersome control schemes I have seen for fighting games with traditional pads.

I don't understand why not keep the exact same control scheme for motion but map the punches to L/R and every other motion be replicated by the sticks, where each stick is essantially replicating the movement of one joy con?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Good to see a bunch of controllers being supported....but after all the gameplay footage ive seen i dont think i will play this game without the Dual Joycon/Motion setup.

Yeah, the fact that they don't show curving on the dual joycon option could mean that gyro is used for the rest.

They really haven't been clear on the controls outside the first option.

That is beyond stupid reasoning. Not saying your speculation is wrong though.

That seems like a very bad control scheme for a full controller. It's like they wanted this to be for Wiimotes. Why not use the shoulder buttons or right sticks? Why would you have guard on pushing the stick?

I understand that people would prefer the motion controls, because this doesn't look intuitive at. All.

It seems that way but that's SO DUMB. Like the whole reason to buy a pro controller is to have better controls and more buttons. And then they gimp it intentionally. What the hell.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
I like how the images even depict the hand in its natural resting spot with the left index finger right on the trigger.

Which is unused.

Solid controls right there.

And yet SL goes unused on the single joycon in favor of the Z button which seems awkward as well.

Knowing Nintendo the reasoning is probably that players on Joycons or motions controls dont just get destroyed by player on Pro Controllers ....lol.

As it stands, everyone using non-motion controls will be destroyed by those using motion controls.

is "change target" really more of an important button than "guard" on the single joy con control scheme? bizarre, especially as the stupid click to guard is carried across to other schemes.

edit: oh wtf ZL is that stupid button on the side and L is still unused

uhh wtf?

This controller parity is so stupid, what the fuck are they thinking?

This also doesn't look good for any future competitive game made by nintendo, i bet they do the same thing with smash bros and use a stupid button map on the pro controller just for parity.

Considering that motion controls allow you to be more precise, I don't think that's the case.

Besides, with the way things are now, it's actually the other way around. Players using motion controls have a clear advantage from a mechanical point of view. Which is strange.

Except motion controls are the superior option for people who don't just dislike them for reasons...same as in Splatoon where you're at a disadvantage not using gyro aiming

Guarding seems very unintuitive. There have been a lot of positive impressions about the game, but I've seen little about how the game is outside of motion controls.

Let's be honest. You were never going to get "better" controls with a gamepad. There is no easy way to map movement, and punch aiming to two 2 analogs. You would need 3 analogs, or make it so that you can't control both arms independently. But yes, it seems like they gimped the controls for consistency, so now you get controls that are even worse.

Also I remember reading somewhere that ZL and ZR are also punch. Idk, why they don't make L block.

Should be clear by now that the game is developed with motion controls in mind first and foremost. Seems like button-only controls are just an afterthought for them.

I dont know...i assume they playtested the different control setups for many hours and came away with the impressions that Pad players would have a advantage with the same control options. Playing via Motion controls takes more effort than just hitting buttons in the Pro....i dont see a scenario where Pro Controller player wouldnt just dominate could influence the hits the same way a motion players.

Well....we will see how it works out with the Testpunch Demo.

I really hope there's some duplicate functionality, or that they'll add it. By that I mean having two inputs do the same action.

Because not making good use of the triggers seem really weird. Thankfully the main control-scheme is dual joy-cons, so hopefully this won't have too big of an effect on the game.

If you play charger without gyros you're gimping yourself. They're factually faster than sticks

Maybe faster but by nature, motions controls are less accurate than a traditionnal control scheme so yeah.

I would understand if it was just a simple fighting with no depth but Nintendo is actually pushing with tournaments and online ranking. So... Why ?

I don't think that's going to happen. Smash allows custom controls anyway.

I'm pretty sure most of the good players in Splatoon use gyro. For aiming, they're generally more precise than an analog stick.

Maybe not better controls, but definitely controller parity. You move by moving both left and right analogue stick, exactly how you do in motion. And the punches are mapped to L and R. That's it, really.

This is the first time I hear of such a thing.

but they literally just need to make one change (move guard from l-click to shoulder button, which is free) and they're done

Exactly and that's why they are just an afterthought as of now. They clearly didn't put much effort into them compared to motion control-based controls.

With motion controls, you can move your character and steer your punches at the same time. Also, the motion tech is super-responsive and precise now, according to previews I've read and impressions from Gaffers.

I wonder if curving Puncher is mapped to the ZL/ZR and L/R buttons? Using gyro wouldn't work since you have to curve two punches at the same time. Maybe ZR/ZL curve outward and L/R curve inward? Oh, and single joy-con players are just screwed then lol
