Game Freak hiring programmer for 3DS RPG (so next Pokemon will be on 3DS?)

I'm building a Masuda shrine in my room if GF releases the next Pokémon game on 3D5.

The less $400 systems I have to buy the better.

Because the 3DS didn't even run Sun and Moon well in a lot of spots. Plus, lets be honest, these games need a visual upgrade. Why would anyone want the next game to be on 8 year old hardware unless they aren't planning to own a Switch?

It should be pretty clear why people want them to move on. Nintendo put out a new system that Pokemon would look a lot better on.

The majority doesn't care about visuals on Pokémon.

A complete waste of money and time for something that makes absoluty no difference to most people.

Wasn't there a thread not long ago about Game Freak hiring HD developers to work on "one of the world's most famous franchises" or something?

Wouldn't that contradict the assumption in the thread title?

EDIT: This thread- http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1353857

I was close I guess.
It doesn't necessarily contradict it, as those people with Wii U and Vita experience could be getting hired for the theoretical 2019 first pair of generation 8 (Switch) games. And they could just be hiring this one programmer now to work on a 3DS version of Stars for this year (I don't think it's absolutely impossible for them to hire an additional programmer in June to work on Stars' 3DS version if it launches in November, and then have them work on the patches/updates for that).

3DS and Switch aren't wirelessly compatible with each other, so next mainline Pokémon game won't be cross platform.

snip.

I didn't say that it would be cross-platform or that 3DS and Switch players would play with each other. I just said that it would come to both platforms.

I guess it doesn't contradict it, but you'd think a job listing from several months ago would be for a project coming before a later job listing. Especially if we expect a title to be releasing in ~5 months... I don't know how common it is to hire a new programmer less than 5 months before launch.

But really I read the thread title as assuming the next Pokemon installment (not Stars, but whatever new gen game comes) will be on 3DS, and if you're just referring to the one likely happening this year then yeah, what you're suggesting makes sense. I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see it be 3DS/Switch cross platform, or even new 3DS/Switch.

I just would hate to see the backlash if it's just 3DS/new 3DS and no Switch.

If it is related to Pokemon, then hopefully Stars is cross-gen. I really want the Diamond and Pearl remakes to be on Switch because I love that gen and want to see it reborn.

As I've said before, whether Stars is Switch only or also on the 3DS, the outcome is the same for Switch: Nintendo will sell whatever it can produce this holiday (Switch will probably be supply-constrained already with just Mario). The only difference in the two scenarios is that if Nintendo goes cross-gen, they make more money and push 3DS hardware. If I had to make this decision at either Nintendo or Game Freak, I would put Stars on both.

Possibly but a lot of programmers work on these games so it doesn't seem impossible they could replace one who has to leave the project for some reason or add an additional one.

Ah yeah I thought that might have been what you assumed reading the thread title, what I meant was just the next Pokemon RPG game (so including Stars, not just mainline paired games).

I think 7th gen games are going to be cross-platform for 3ds and Switch - Pokemon Stars / Pokemon DP Remake

And 8th gen will be Switch exclusive

Of course it will be on 3DS. They have an immense market in kids. The Switch is too expensive for kids, so, it's either a pokemon for mobile or 3DS.

Yeap, but overall answer should be a cross-gen release. So 3DS version for that customer base and Switch version for those who left 3DS in the dustbin.

I knew it. Just there's no way Game Freak will release and HD console Pokémon RPG just yet, no matter how portable the Switch is, they will probably stick doing Pokémon RPGs with the outdated 3DS till 2020.

This seems kinda late to be staffing up?

Even for the 3ds hiring for a project now probably means whatever this isn't something scheduled for 2017?

Idk just feels really late. Like I get that the 3ds is still gonna get some games, but you'd think a lot of those titles would already be in production.

I don't doubt they will do a cross-gen release. That's the best franchise to make kids annoy their parents about the Switch.

The Pokemon Company doesn't give a shit about new Nintendo hardware, they go for the biggest and most active userbase for their games. Even today, that's still 3DS. And frankly, it seems like Nintendo wants to keep the 3DS around too. There's basically no way Pokemon Stars wouldn't release on 3DS.

The absolute best we could hope for is a 3DS-Switch multiplat.

I'm gonna go with Stars being cross gen.
If it is cross gen I wonder if they'll go ahead and do DP remakes this gen as well and make them cross gen or just go straight to Gen 8 on Switch.

Some of the salt in this thread, holy shit it's amazing.

I fucking love my 3DS and I'll keep buying games for it as long as they're being released. (And heck, even afterward.)

My dream is for Pokemon to go down the Zelda route- classic, top down Pokemon games like all the previous ones, suitable for younger audiences, then big, fully 3D Pokemon games, equivalent to Zelda from Ocarina onwards, which really tear up the rulebook and do something different, without having to simplify everything for young children.

In my ideal world, this job listing would be for the former sort of game, while Game Freak spend the next three years working simultaneously on a game changing 3D Pokemon for Switch. Never gonna happen though.

If this is a Pokemon game I hope to FUCK they let you skip cutscenes or, better yet, just remove cutscenes completely. I couldn't even force myself to proceed past the second "gym". I've also had three different friends of mine tell me the same thing.

I'm playing my 3DS until I can get a Switch and it's really harboring a lot of contempt. I've been playing this thing for the past 5 years it feels like. I want devs to move on to Switch! Especially Game Freak!

At this point I'm not really surprised. We have to accept that Nintendo is still going to support the 3DS for a while, even though it goes against the whole idea of the Switch solving the problem of splitting up their development across two platforms.

It is late. There will be no Pokemon Stars (there was not a Pokemon Z). Gamefreak is starting development on Gen 8 and release on 3DS.

Guys Stars either doesn't exist or is an exclusive main game for switch. There's no reason to half believe a rumour.

Yeah no.

That's not happening.

Yes, they are probably working on Gen 8 now.

No, it absolutely will not be out on 3DS. It'll be out 2019 or 2020 and the 3DS WILL be gone by then.

Again under this scenario you're talking fall 2018 at the earliest.

Even B&W2 didn't release that far after the 3ds launch.

Your eyes aren't worth 300 dollars? I can't look at 3DS games anymore.

Who cares about most people? I'm telling you and the person I quoted why people that don't want the next Pokemon game on 3DS don't want the next Pokemon game on 3DS. It shouldn't be that hard to figure out. It's ugly and it runs poorly in places.

People don't need to fall in line and not care about what everyone else doesn't care about. Except for the convience of dual screens, theres nothing that a 3DS version of Pokemon can do that couldn't be done better on a Switch. And I want them to make the best game they can possibly make, so I'd rather they make it for the console that the game would clearly be better on.

Interesting. The possibility of a 2017 Pokemon game is slowly diminishing though, if they want it out by the end of this year the marketing cycle should be starting any day now.

Jesus. A single opening for a massive company like GF? I would hate to work for their HR dept.
Isn't GF less than 100 employees? Not exactly what I'd call massive.

Oh you poor thing. Your eyes have become too refined for 3DS games. That's a shame.

I regularly go back to old handhelds. Love me some Game Boy Micro.

That's not my problem ;) Jokes aside the 3DS graphics are terribly outdated and personally i don't want to play any more new games on this.

Its a cheap console, good for kids or people who want to play some of the older games, but i will be happy if Nintendos focus switches to Switch in 2018 entirely.

I don't own a 3DS. Not buying one at this point. Interested in the Switch for its portable games able to be played on a TV. The continued support of 3DS means my interest in Switch is less until those games start appearing on the new platform. I get that the user base of the 3DS is still too tempting to ignore but that just leaves people like me out in the cold for another few years it looks like. Oh well, can't find a switch anyway.

Hmm can't say I'd mind the next mainline Pokemon games being on 3ds
Pokemon games are gonna keep on coming so to me it really doesn't matter if we have to wait an extra couple years for the series to come to Switch or some other 3ds successor

Saying that, I do really like to idea of Pokemon on the Switch & I think the series could really benefit but 3ds Pokemon is still great

The next mainline Pokemon games being exclusive to Switch would prompt me to buy the system sooner than I currently plan to though. I imagine it'd drive a lot of sales

The Sun/Moon models are already prepared for HD.
People really need to stop bringing this up. The Pokemon models were in HD since X & Y as way of future proofing. It literally means nothing that S/M had HD models when X/Y has HD models too.

I expect Pokemon on 3DS either this year and they skip next year for a 2019 Switch Gen 8 game or they skip this year with a 2018 3DS game and 2019 Switch game.

Anyone who actually expect a Switch Pokemon game this year I can only look on in bewilderment. Sure it may happened but the chance is so low its not even funny. And everyone expects it because of a rumor lol.

The graphics on most Game Boy Advance games are great compared to X/Y or Sun/Moon though. If not only for the reason that a lot of them are pixel based, and that art style holds up a lot better than 3D models.

Everyone should have known that we weren't getting a switch Pokémon game after the whole "well seeing as how the Switch isn't a 3DS, Pokémon as it currently is wouldnt 'work' on Switch because it's not an actual portable and it's impossible to make Pokémon for something that isn't really portable for stupid dumb reasons. Maybe we'll give it poken or something", thing Gamefreak said not to long ago
