Dragon Quest XI Countdown Carnival Special Stage live stream set for May 27

I would think switch could probably do all 3 versions if they really tried. PS4 version docked and the other versions when portable.

Man what was up with this low resolution stream? Had the same issue with MHXX stream earlier... Weird.

It's crazy... That's where I stand as well now. PS4 version look great but the 3DS version is more appealing and the combat looks better to me.

I really hope we get the 3DS version in the west if the Switch version is just the PS4/UE4 version.

Best outcome would be if the Switch version had all 3 styles... But that's probably asking too much.
Switch version being the ultimate edition would be amazing. I don't know if it makes sense for SE to do it, but I want it.

guys i haven't played any DQ game before, i need to play the previous ones? or its like FF series? btw the ps4 version looks beautiful.
You don't need to play any previous one. It works mostly like FF. The first three are connected storywise and the next three are very loosely connected but after that there's nothing. DQXI seems to have some references to the original trilogy though.

This is funny because the 3DS version looks to be a more a finished product while the PS4 version is beautiful visually, it looks empty and lifeless.

I disagree. For me, it looks like a Pixar movie, the lighting and the nice detailed models make it look very alive. Seriously, looking the PS4 footage during the stream, i wanted to touch the character models.

Ugh...watching the PS4 footage I am again coming around to the reality that I really want both versions :p.

How am I going to split time between them at (western) launch?

It is a quandary.

It's like FF.

Only 1-3 & 4-6 have connections but though the most part they are their own stories and games.

thx, i was worry xD

One thing did stick out to me...I thought the MC was lankier in the PS4 version from the earlier trailers. Seems shorter now and closer to how the 3DS version of him strikes me. I doubt they changed that, wonder why he struck me so differently before.

After watching more footage of both, I can't decide which one I want to play first lol. (Assuming a western release is in the cards.)

It must come or someone needs to build me a time machine and tell me that the languages I did choose to learn haven't worked out for me so hot and so I should just learn Japanese for my videogames instead lol

I think we'll get it eventually, but the lack of confirmation outta Square just makes me mopey. Just be like, "we'll consider it" or something, unless I've missed something.

Missed this, does the PS4 version give you full party control in battle, or are you limited to the MC? I noticed earlier people saying the MC is the only one with free movement, but can you still issue commands to the other party members?

(DQXI) Battle "arenas" (moving from exploration to a different screen for battles) are still a thing in a 2017 jrpg? Japan never stops to amaze me.

Yes, all games should become action RPGs. Thank you Perfo for your amazing insight and contribution.

That's not what I said. I mean they can't still find a way to stop the game from pausing and loading to a new screen for every damn encounter. It's annoying as hell and breaks the immersion.

I agree. It's a huge shame that battle transitions break the immersion in a RPG franchise known and loved for being so immersive that players have to use a menu command to investigate the ground at their feet.

That's not how you investigate in real life?

That's how it works for me.

Ok it's a cool feature. I get it. Bravo!
Hopefully next FF goes back to the loading times and random battles of ff9 too! That would be so fresh! Why I even dared to think different! I need punishment.

From the interview:

Dragon Quest XI began development just a little over 2 years ago in 2015. Development was originally just the PS4 version, but because they wanted the series to get in as many hands as possible they began developing a 3DS version. They didn't want people playing the 3DS version to feel that they were playing an inferior version, so one of the staff on the project had the idea of having a 3D and 2D mode and got the ok.

They are happy with the PS4 version graphics and the realism it provides which they think goes well with Toriyama's style, but feel if they made it anymore realistic it would lose its DQ-ness.

Two year?! That's impressive.
UE4 is a beast.
Let's hoping this is a new trilogy and DQXII comes in another 2 years.
A new HD saga of DQ would be mindblowing.

Well we gotta remember that, at least for the unlocalized version, it doesn't have orchestrated music or voice acting. Prolly saved them a lot of time, too.

Oh man, that CM! I only played VIII, but that was still very relatable.

Yep, i guess leaving VO for the localization is a nice way to save time yet to also make sense as a traditional DQ.
If they keep this pace, i wouldn't be surprised if we get yet another 1 or 2 PS4 DQ before the end of the gen.

Pre-production and staff recruitment took time too ;~;

Well that must have taken what, 1 year? Still impressive for SE.

Not every game is made to appeal to you. DQ with its menu driven gameplay is how Japan prefers to play the game, can you at least let them have that?

The PS4 version looks pretty good, the art assets are pretty solid. I would definitely turn off free move however, that's a little jarring lol.

The 3Ds is quite a bit too retro for me, but kudos to those looking for that.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Playing a MMO in a handheld seens so right. I wish this was released over here =(
While true....i would be worried about the amount of time I would invest on something like this. That's why I lowkey hope that FFXIV Switch never happens... Would ruin productivity on my end.

Am I even talking of that?
I'm saying WHY the game NEEDS to load everytime I encounter a monster! Battle can easily happen in there without breaking the action of exploring/fighting. Of course must stay TURN BASED and MENU BASED, I didn't even MENTION that!

The PS4 version is gorgeous but I can't stand how the main character has weirdly long legs and strange proportions in general. The graphics though, are what I always dreamed a DQ game would look like one day. Every character is like a cartoon, but not cell shaded. There's a cg but cartoony warmth to the whole game.

That scene doesn't look familiar.

Whoa wait, apparently they made a new season of Yoshihiko and it's from that? Hot damn I had no idea. I need to watch that.

It's a FF x DQ cross over episode, Yoshihiko is complaining about the battle screen layout being diagonal, FF hero is insisting it is not diagonal but 'like so'.

Season 3 is good.

There isn't actually a different scene for battles though. You fight in the same surroundings as you encountered the enemy symbol. All it does is play a transition animation, hide the other enemies (which you didn't encounter) and turn the symbol (single monster) into a party of monsters.

There is a slight load time and short black screen but it is mostly seamless, since the area data is the same. It probably loads the other party member models and their animations every time. Having the opening animation of the enemy party as a very short transition scene is just one of those DQ traditions.

Outside of the DQ8 , the load time for DQ battle are almost instant and since DQ battles are so fast (outside of maybe the PS2 DQ8 which was fixed with the fast battle option on 3DS) , there is no break in the action of exploring/fighting.

For the record... the hype for this game is real. Will be supporting it whenever it hits the West.

Does kinda pain me that the MC has zero personality or something. That's something I didn't like about DQ9 but then again.... it's self insertion...

At least the party members have personality unlike 9

This looks great. Right up there with NNK as my most anticipated upcoming jRPG.

I don't get free movement mode though. Is it purely cosmetic or is there some gameplay benefit?

I'm in a weird place with this game. I only just recently got into the series, but it turns out I really enjoy them. I'm playing through them in order on mobile, just approaching the end of 4 now - so I've got more than half the series to go. (I also played Builders and loved that.)

A new one coming out is kind of exciting. Part of me wants to go full on hype and import it day one. I could understand it in Japanese with no problems, but... actually, I love the way these games are localised so much that the English text is quite a big part of why I enjoy the series. Playing it in Japanese wouldn't quite be the same.

Still, I'm thinking a localisation isn't announced yet, and it could be a while away. Plus, there's a non-zero chance that the 3DS version will never come out in English, and I love the old-school aesthetics of both the 2D and 3D version on 3DS. It would be a shame to never play that version at all.

So now I'm like... If I imported the 3DS version at launch and played that, by the time the console version finally comes out in English (hopefully on Switch), I would probably be fine to play it again, this time with the better graphics and flavourful English text.

(And the longer I put off playing it in Japanese, the more likely it is that the English version will get announced like a week later, lol.)

...or I could just keep playing through them in order. I have literally hundreds of hours of DQ to get through, and I probably don't need to rush to play 11. But new game hype :(

(Of course, this would all be solved if they would do simultaneous worldwide releases like any other game!)

Anyway, that's my life story about Dragon Quest XI. Enjoy.

Is there is a big gameplay difference between the 3ds (3d) version and the PS4 ?

What if the switch version is the PS4 version + the 2d version of the game ? Wouldn't that make sense ? But maybe they are different in scale i don't know.

Since there were comments asking about the Switch version of DQXI during the DQX stream, Tsubaki fowarded that question to Saitou:

https://youtu.be/ZJpKo1bFueg?t=36m13s

He says there isn't anything concrete to talk about yet and he has to wait for the right time to give concrete info. He also cites "adult circumstances" as a reason why he can't say anymore, which basically implies some kind of confidentiality.

Back when DQX got ports for PC, mobile and all Nintendo platforms, but not for PS4, Saitou cited "adult circumstances" as a reason why he couldn't comment on the prospects of a PS4 version. Many people on this forum assumed Nintendo had an exclusivity agreement with Squenix for DQX for that reason.

The Switch version of DQXI is long confirmed of course. I think Saitou maybe promised Sony not to talk about the Switch version as not to compromise the sales of the PS4 version. That's also in SE's best interest, obviously.

There is an official statement by SE that they will release info on the Switch version some time after the release of the other two.

I was watching a gameplay video the other day and they mentioned that the 3DS version doesn't have jumping, so hidden items are reached in different ways, e.g. by walking across ropes. So between the 3DS and PS4 versions, the map layouts are probably quite different.

That said, the 2D and 3D versions on 3DS already have somewhat different map layouts, and you can only switch between them at a church. From the little I've seen, I'd guess that it probably would also be possible to mix and match the 2D and PS4 versions too if they really wanted to.

(Perhaps there are other gameplay systems that differ between the two, though?)
