I understand what you're saying, but it Capcom even capable of making two Monster Hunters concurrently with good quality?

Probably not. People have been ignoring that point. All of the Portable games are based heavily on the equivalent mainline game and Generations is heavily based on 4 and reuses assets from all the past games.

They were never an entire separate series.

MH3rd is still the best selling Monster Hunter to date?

Yes, although the 4th Generation of games as whole is more successful than the 3rd Generation.

imagine the sales of it on the original nds if it was strong enough. But then again, it was too perfect for this world and Nintendo was too proud of themselves to make a stronger machine

I have no doubt in my mind that Capcom would have supported the DS with Monster Hunter had it be strong enough. I think they've even alluded to that in the past.

If that was the case them MH3 for the Wii would have sold much better than it did.

1) The games got popular on PSP. While the original fans most certainly moved from PS2 to PSP your friends is ingoring the fact that the games got BIG into their new console.

2) The move to PSP to 3DS makes sense since the 3DS was still a handheld that was on their first year and that was also going to be cheaper than the competition.

3) If people are willing to buy home consoles to play MonHun while Tri didn't sell as well as the Portable entries?

The game sold more than 2 million copies. It sold more on 3DS but I think the userbase was bigger as well.

They got big portable, obviously. But the last games have been pretty much made to be portable experiences. Monster Hunter Tri didn't really offer anything different from the previous games.

We were talking about a big, next gen Monster Hunter, open world, with a good online service. Nobody made that game yet, nobody knows how people are going to react. It could bomb, it could be the next big thing.

And of course these are just opinions, these are rumors and the only thing we know is that the XX is coming to Switch in August.

I honestly can´t see who would benefit with this possibly deal.
Capcom would have to develop 2 different games from the same IP.
Sony would have a mainline MH but maybe a product that could not achieve it´s proposal :"steal JP from Ninty".
Nintendo would suffer both : comercially from losing an IP that now feels kinda part of their portable ecosystem and we don´t know how could compararisions ( graphics, visuals ) affect their version.
In the end I think the better solution would be : make a new MH, an HD MH, with NS specs on mind. Port it to PS4 and Steam. And there you go.
You have a game that could do well on JP : for those seeking portability the NS would be the better option. For those seeking higher quality the PS4 would be the obvious choice.
On west : PS4 and Steam are the big players so bring the game to them. Better if with cross play.

This thread is popular lol.

The description for the PS4 game kinda sounds like a flop in the making. Noticeably fewer weapons, monsters, and combat depth is not going to be an easy sell unless everything else makes up for it. It would be hilarious if MH5 did end up on PS4 but also that the contract is limited to just that and the Switch gets MH5G.

The salt when they announce MH5 for PS4 exclusively and no MH for Switch at all...

I am getting teary eyes right now.

This will be the biggest thing to the board since Sega announces the end of hardware.

Old, level-minded posters committing account suicide, bans everywhere. "Capcom shot themselves in the foot" and new memes will be born. I don't think I will even log on Gaf on this day.

Brace yourselves.

I mean, even if you're entertaining this rumor, it states that the Switch will get a Monster Hunter.

I meant new, not a port of a 3DS game.

Also I think this version was announced now to soften the blow.

Well, I am still getting the tissues.

@above

I had to look at the meaning of schefron whatever, but it means being happy at the suffering of someone else.
No I am no happy at all, I actually have Nintendo stocks, so this is bad news to me.

I might be exaggerating a lot, but it's just me getting ready for the worst case scenario.

Probably because it says 'calmly' in the title, and that's like asking for trouble.

As for me, rumor or not, I'd love to get my hands on PS4 Monster Hunter, even with potential changes in the formula.

I mean if it did happen I wouldn't care but in the end Capcom would be losing sales.

Local multiplayer is MH bread and butter.

Not at all but none of that means a Monster Hunter exclusive on the PS4 would alienate the Japanese fan base. Especially when you have XX coming out and looks specifically to target everything you mentioned.

Yes, XX on Switch will most likely not alienate the fanbase. You have yet to offer a reason why MH5 exclusively on PS4(Xbox One is obviously even less relevant in Japan) would not alienate the fanbase.

It's like how Resident Evil 7 didn't alienate 4-5-6 fans because they can just play those games instead of PS4 and XBO. Oh wait...

XX on Switch is an obvious warm up release anyway. Like G on Wii or 3G on 3DS.

Seems that way. The PS4 could certainly have gotten the port as well, so the question becomes why Capcom is seemingly only warming up the Switch for Monster Hunter. Maybe that Nintendo localizing/publishing deal is better than we think.

the ridiculousness of this thread is that the switch just got a MH announced and people draw the conclusion that this is proof for MH5 on PS4

or 3 ultimate on wiiu

That's it.

Someone said even that is even the same people that was crying for a release for vita.
Is not so hard to buy a console for a specific game if you really love it..

I don't get why people has to build rumors and fake leak over it.
It doesn't even has a sense on economic stand-point, looking back on all the moves that capcom made over the past on this brand

It's fine guys, I own Nintendo stocks, I speak for the company I own, it's not trolling, see?

And no, you don't release old games on a platform to "soften the blow"; you release them to warm up your customers and communicate that the series will continue there.

As much as I love MH, I would only ever buy a portable version. No way I'd be able to put in more than 100hrs if I had to sit in front of a tv.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Eh....they still have a business relationship with - MH has had alot of Nintendo related DLC in the last years, Nintendo is still publishing Capcom games in Europe like USF2 or MH Stories for 3DS.

And the most important point is that Switch is selling...so Capcom probably dont wanna screw up that relationship too much, while they were fine to straight up ignore the Vita.

They would have to soften the blow if there shareholders would ask why the next MH title is skipping the top selling portable in Japan right now. Im really interested to see how this all will play out.

This is the case for me as well.

Though I do have a lot of friends on ps4 who have been listening to me talk about MH for years. They'll probably end up buying a console version and I'll most likely buy it too so we could play together.

Basically, capcom gets all my money.

Capcom better prepare themselves to be bought by Tencent :p

It actually has a better chance of happening than a westernized MH5 though, but still

They could basically just get rid of the loading screens for pathways and itd be the same

If they did that it would make it similar to a Souls type of map which is fine. What I was talking about is 1 giant open world map with different locales that people were suggesting. In MH you're in a hub, pick a quest and get deployed to whatever map. Not all fights are multiple area maps. Some are single areas. Suppose they did make it open world like BotW. How would they implement a Dalamadur fight? You would have to scale up Speartip Crag to just to fight? What happens when someone carts or falls off the mountain?

https://youtu.be/OfSfGiz93rg

What about fighting Jhen Mohran? You have to travel to get to a harbor. Does someone have to control the ship since it's free roam open world?

https://youtu.be/GbnMFMLQpGA

The current format for MH is fine. You meet in hub, prep, pick quest and get deployed to said locale. One open world would make things tedious. Like I said if the do make an open world to cater to the west just make it a spin-off.

As a big monster hunter fan who has played a ton of tri and 4... part of me believes there will be this new "westernized" MH for consoles and capcom is going to try to get the west with it and just hope it does well enough in japan too. Meanwhile they will have the "portable" series that stays very much like the monster hunter we all know and love and will be made more cost effectively. This is shitty news because this could create a weird divide in the player base. Switch version of XX could very well be just a continuation of the "portable" series.

There will never be a full on entry in the true style again. 4 will be the last of its line. The monster hunter that play traditionaly will be a sub series from here on out and the full big production will be a more western style game, I'm thinking then L1L2R1R2 buttons will be used heavily(think dark souls,a hit in the west) and we will lose the traditional monster hunter controls.

Monster Hunter 4 is the mainentry and portable. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is on 3DS and Wii U.

People should seriously stop to act like there are the mainentries on one hand and the portables on the other. These times are long gone.
