Quite surprised this thread has been going on for this long, so there's some credence to this rumor?

The guy apparently guessed MHXX correctly. In terms of a PS4 MH, Capcom is the biggest credence to that possibility.

But Capcom killed the deal. And you can't extrapolate from the past like that. "Capcom gonna Capcom trolololol". Make an actual argument why the torpoed decision from 15 years ago would be repeated.

Funnily enough, there is an answer to that dilemma. Covers both handheld- and home console. Starts with a S end with a H.

Capcom talks about growing the series in overseas. Why would they miss the most popular console right now, PS4, with 50 million+ sales overseas?

You missed the point I made troughout this thread on purpose. I'm not arguing against Monster Hunter on PS4 in general. I'm arguing against guaranteeing by contract to avoid Switch.

It's not a big deal in the west (still successful though), but it's among the largest franchises in Japan.

It's a pretty big deal, especially in the context of the Japanese market and it's historic performance and contributions to both Sony's and Nintendo's handheld success there.

Rising awareness of the series in the West means it's increasingly important for Capcom to capitalize and expand there.

It's also a flashpoint for fans of the series, as many are more hardcore and this more defensive of their preferences, which is made worse as the series has tended to stay (outside a infamous betrayalton) on a single platform holder outside of the MMO versions.

It's basically the Call of Duty of the Japanese market in terms of success.
Thanks guys, I depend on GAF to keep me informed. :)

That's a first. All my non gamer good friends would be fist bumping you right now.

We are probably a week away for this being announced at e3 if there is any truth behind it, my point of view is that it could happen but for different reasons than those relating to Sony wanting to win Japan.

* We should remember that in the 3ds dark times Nintendo managed to make a deal to get both a Monster Hunter 3 game and secure Monster Hunter 4 basically killing PS Vita in its early days, I'm sure that was not well received by Sony, so they could use this as a revenge move and steal some thunder from Switch that while it's not direct competition it's still competition in the gaming entertaining market.

* Capcom could very well try to expand MH in the West if they have been looking at the success of Dark Souls Nioh, after all MH shares some DNA with those.

But on the other side if this is not announced at e3 or PSX at the latest I can't see it happening at all.

And even if this happens MH will still be getting new releases on Switch, an exclusivity deal putting all eggs on the uncertain PS4 basket is well beyond the level of madness that Capcom is capable of.

That's just as weird too lol.

Switch getting the traditional MH games that all the fans love. Sony getting some kind spin-off but under a mainline number that no one may even want.
Well I'm ready to move on. If you've played all the other games fatigue sets in and a new concept might be enjoyable. Especially if you look at games such as dragon's dogma. Besides they already weirded out the gameplay with Generations special skill moves.

Portable might be cool too depending on if they actually improve the concept with bigger social areas in MP. And it's always nice to also have a portable option for when traveling.

* Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was already developed during the "dark times" of the 3DS and 4 was on the way. And lol, you think Sony is that petty?

* Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was that game.

Why not? They have made multiple moves in the past trying to undermine competition either copying things or securing exclusives, just look at the SFV deal for example.

* Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was that game.

No it was not, this release would allow them to reach the quite large PS4 user base that has a lot of Souls Nioh followers.

To be clear, this is just me reasoning why it could happen, not really me wanting/rooting for this to happen.

Man look at the size of this topic!

See clearly there are a large swath of potential MH enthusiasts who are actively waiting for Capcom to finally make THE game or at least a couple of games that can cover all the bases

As far as the rumor goes..

Since there hasnt been anything leaked since... its hard to even bother commenting on it

I am super happy to finally have an entry on the Switch and it would be great to have a PS4 game

Souls didn't blow up on PS4, it did it on PS3/360/PC. The series has done well on PS4 no doubt but Souls is a multiplatform success story, not a uniquely PS4 one.

Nioh sold a million globally. MH4U already sold 1.5 million in just the west, on 3DS it's already bigger than Nioh is on PS4.

I'm fairly certain MH4U has sold more in the west than Nioh has sold globally. And although Dark Souls III has likely sold more on PS4 in the west than MH4U, it's probably not by more than a few hundred thousand units.

Honestly, MH5 isn't going to move many more units in the west than MH4U, unless it's multiplatform.

As I said before:

Code:
[PSV] Toukiden # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2013.06.27} (¥6.090) - 122.794 / NEW
[PSP] Toukiden <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2013.06.27} (¥5.040) - 66.016 / NEW

[ALL] Toukiden # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2013.06.27} - 188.810 / NEW

[PSV] Toukiden: Kiwami # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2014.08.28} (¥6.264) - 79.384 / NEW
[PSP] Toukiden: Kiwami # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2014.08.28} (¥5.184) - 11.026 / NEW
[PS4] Toukiden: Kiwami <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2015.04.23} (¥7.344) - 6.103 / NEW

Code:
04./00. [PSV] Toukiden 2 # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2016.07.28} (¥6.800) - [B]59.032[/B] / NEW <60,40%>
05./00. [PS4] Toukiden 2 # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2016.07.28} (¥7.800) - [B]46.334[/B] / NEW <78,86%>

...you can't be seriously using Toukiden to prove that MH would fail on PS4. Like, this game doesn't sell on portable either, it doesn't have a big user base in the first place and is far from being a next gen game.

I honestly don't get why people are upset about this rumor anyways. Switch would get the classic MH experience while PS4 would probably get something completely different that might attract new players and make the brand bigger. A number doesn't really change anything.

It's pretty much a Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica situation.

Dragon Quest thread also get tons of replies but they keep bombing in the West.
And the "huge PS4 userbase" didn't help Heroes 1 & 2.

Anyway I would be quite interest in a Monster Hunter spin-off more focused on action, it also helps that this one won't probably take 100+ hours to reach the last quests when they remove the crafting/collecting/preparations aspect.

Yes, yes it was. They said that and they had success with it.

Too many posts... head is killing me.

Could someone nail down this calmly discussed topic in a few short notes for me?

A whole bunch of nothing, armchair analysis, hopes and trolls.

Like every other Monster Hunter rumor thread since it went to Nintendo plattforms.

It's hard to know with DS3 since we haven't gotten a shipment update in about a year much less any platform splits. It did 2.5m in the west initially and Steamspy has it at 1.6m currently.

The better comparison is probably Bloodborne since it's exclusive and we got a sales update on it awhile after launch. It's over 2m globally which isn't far off from MH4U's 1.5m western figure but is also well below the game's 4.1m global figure.

True

Even though it has a massive install base its also super competitive

Switch is probably the better option for now until they decide to dump a ton of money to make a competitive flagship game on PS4

I dont see them ever doing that
