Emmanuel Macron refuses any renegociations of the Paris accord

It's funny how easy Macron can get people to cheer for him. He's basically Social Media Merkel. I hope he can back up his persona soon with reforms.

Almost every single developed signatory put out a similar press statement - even Theresa May (after much prompting and ridicule) and the UK is the US' lapdog. Why is doing something nearly every other developed country has also done super-amazing when it comes to Macron specifically? Why is there no equivalent thread for Merkel's statement or Gentiloni's?

There's nothing stopping anybody from creating threads about Merkel or Gentiloni. The fact is that Macron has had some great speeches lately (which is surprising considering how rather bland his campaign speeches were). I guess he's really feeling the pressure and stature of the function now. His speeches inspire people enough to make threads out of it. It helps that he has been recently in the spotlight due to the French elections and he is also the one who has stand up to both Putin and Trump in a matter of a week or so.

Merkel also got her fair share of threads for almost any of the important statements towards Trump or US, just have a look.

And I would argue that being president of France is a job that includes a lot about handling foreign relations and PR.

Translation:
Emmanuel Macron also invited American scientists and entrepreneurs to come work in France. "To all the scientists, entrepreneurs, engaged citicizens that were disappointed by the US president's decision," he assured them that they would "in France, find a second nation." "I am calling you: come work here, with us, on concrete solutions about climate," he added. "Tonight, America has turned its back on America, but France will never turn its back on Americans," Emmanuel Macron added.

Daaaaamn

Goddamn France you did good making this guy your president.

For future use.

Now, Macron has won points with me since he's clearly shown he isn't scared of Trump and won't back down without a fight. I just wonder if he can walk the walk with all this big talk.

With everything happening with Trump and Brexit, I'm glad the world - not just France - has a leader like this.

Hopefully Merkel's reaction will be much the same.

Pretty jealous of these leaders Germany, France and Canada have.

Specially when I look at our choices of May or Corbyn, god that's depressing and with Brexit on top what a shitshow the UK is right now.

Merkel has been openly critical since Trump's election. Merkel just doesn't communicate that as Macron does. Her Bierzeltrede was Merkel slapping Trump in the face.

Come over and try to get advantages of the EU as long as you can get. I know that at least germany is currently very generous regarding citinzenships for british people. You wont get one immediatly, but I expect that you will have advantages later on.

Cross-posting from the other thread.

Merkel's reaction:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate accord “can’t and won’t stop all those of us who feel obliged to protect the planet

Merkel said Friday that the announcement by Trump was “extremely regrettable and that’s putting it very mildly.”

But she told reporters in a brief statement that “it’s now necessary to look forward after last night’s announcement by the U.S. administration.”

Merkel says Germany and others “will combine our forces more resolutely than ever ... to address and tackle big challenges for humanity such as climate change.”

She adds that “we need this Paris agreement to preserve creation. Nothing can and will stop us from doing so.”

Again, "putting it very mildly" does not accurately convey the anger from the original German.

Haha, thanks for the replies guys. I wasn't expecting that big a response :)

To be exact, Chinese is my mother tongue but I'm mainly speaking in English. So I'll be basing the difficulty of learning new language with it. Currently studying Aerospace, haven't decided where to go afterwards other than "not US or U.K. If possible"

As someone else already said, go to Toulouse. If you can do a semester abroad (or do a masters if you're still doing your bachelor's), check out Suparéo.

Germany elected Hitler.

To be fair to both 1930s Germans and today's Americans, both Trump and Hitler were elected without a majority.

The US needs some serious reform post-Trump, but unfortunately I don't see much happening once he's gone. It'll just be "let's forget about that".

I was surprised to learn Angela Merkel is supposed to be centre-right. Centrist in Europe seems to be hard left by American standards.
Macron is center-right too. There aren't many american Democrats that would be considered on the left in Europe, no matter how much people like to say Bernie Sanders is "far left" (a lot of people don't even consider him "left" at all for our standards).

Yeah the democratic scale is skewed super hard right in the US compared to EU standards lol.

Native English speakers in America are frequently told by non-natives that our language has too many cryptic exceptions and that many other languages are easier with more consistent rules. You've never encountered this belief before?

That's funny because compared to Swedish, English is a structured language lol, our language breaks rules constantly.

That moment when you respect France and her President far more than your own country and that orange piece of human waste running it.

Jesus christ America.

Make the Earth great again!

Someone please fix the spelling in thread title and OP. It's annoying me.

Also, Macron is a beast.

Yeah what the hell lol. The fact that Hitler was democratically elected is what makes it so scary when we get loons like Trump spouting racist bullshit to win.

What actually scares me more is the ammount of people who come up with that shit recently. Lack of Education seems to be a bigger problem then I expected...

Macron did really well in his first few weeks. I don't know what is going to happen with the US, the list of close allies seems to shrink down rapidly to just SA and Israel (and that's a maybe)

yeah me as well. Also Hitler was a well respected leader who actually did help germany grow stronger. That it was in preparation for a great war was not foreseeable for most at that time. Only after the invasion of poland and the systematic eradication of the jews started people saw his true face.

Edit: I know that he started from the beginning to undermine and disable the democracy and got rid of any political opposition. what i am trying to say is that he managed to keep all this under the rug for most of his early years and was seen as a competent leader.

Yeah. As an ignorant Yank, I have no idea about this guy's domestic policies, but at least in terms of diplomacy, he's really killing it so far.

The part about never turning their back on America is particularly important. Without the French, there would most likely not be an America. Funny how easy people forget that.
Indeed. This is very true. France was a key ally for the United States during the Revolutionary War and they provided a lot of invaluable help against Britain to the young nation. If it weren't for that assistance, it's extremely unlikely the US would have been able to win some key battles and the war would have likely taken a very different turn as a result. France was one of our very first allies, and facts such as that should not be as easily tossed aside or forgotten as they are. Much <3 <3 <3 for France!

Really like this newfound resistance against America. The world leaders used to just follow America almost blindly and didn't dare to criticize them, but now with Trump the rest of the world has seemingly woken up a bit and are pushing back! This is great to see. I hope this keeps up and isn't a one off thing.

Last German elections were not free elections. There was already huge amount voter suppression by Nazi stormtroopers. In last free elections Nazis got 33% of votes and actually their popularity decreased compared to previous elections.

Then the NSDAP had a coaliton with the conservatives and Hitler became Chanchellor perfectly in the ways how the the democratic system of the Weimarer Republic works.

Angela Merkel had never a 50% majority, too. She always relied and other parties to make a coalition with her. And its perfectly democractic, its the way our system works.

...lacks reading comprehension.
I have no idea what his presidency is going to ultimately lead to, but this guy really has balls of steel. I mean, first he out alphas Trump on his trip, then he makes a video telling the US directly that he wants their best in France, and now he's just like, fuck that, we aren't making no deals. I'm just waiting for him to just flat out say, 'Fuck Donald Trump' and drop the mic.

He doesn't have balls of steel, he just talks like everybody should talk to the giant man-child that calls himself POTUS so he would finally be exposed for what he is, a giant egomaniac bully.

His tough guy performance may have worked in his TV show and to a point for his company (let's just ignore the 1.8 billion $ the Trump company has in debt to Russian and German banks) but it doesn't work in the real world where the people you want something from are not paid by you.

The whole thing is so crazy, the Paris Accord is neither legally binding nor does it set fixed results the countries have to achieve. He could've just said "we will not reduce CO2 emission by that much %, we will just do y %. There's nothing to renegotiate because there was never anything negotiated, it was and is always the free decision of any country to do as much as they want to do.

Wasn't the actual election that Hitler won generally considered a sham due to massive voter intimidation the Nazi party carried out?

No, the elections leading to Hitler's election as chancellor were generally considered fair. But during that time, most parties had actual goon squads that either brawled with squads from other parties or just wrecked different events, e.g., theatre plays.

The Nazis' goons were probably the worst, but even the social democrats had a squad during the Weimar Republic.

You're probably thinking of the elections in March 1933. There, Nazis did indeed intimidate much more than before, but even then, they didn't get an absoluty majority.

No he wasn't. Stop this revisionism.
What? Of course he was.

After the election, Chancellor Papen urged Hindenburg to continue to govern by emergency decrees. Nevertheless, on 3 December he was superseded by his Defence Minister Kurt von Schleicher who in talks with the left wing of the Nazi Party led by Gregor Strasser tried to build up a Third Position (Querfront) strategy. These plans failed when in turn Hitler disempowered Strasser and approached Papen for coalition talks. Papen obtained Hindenburg's consent to form the Hitler Cabinet on 30 January 1933.

No seriously though, how hard is it to learn French? I've already gotten Chinese down so now it's either French or German.

Haha, thanks for the replies guys. I wasn't expecting that big a response :)

I'd say French is probably easier, at least for english speakers. According to the US Foreign Service Institute (FSI) you need less than 600 hours to become fluent in french, whereas german demands 750 hours, which makes french one of the easiest languages to learn. Maybe there's something like the FSI in China with a similar list so you can base the difficulty according to chinese as well.

Here's the ranking of hardest languages and the time needed to learn:
http://www.effectivelanguagelearning.com/language-guide/language-difficulty

And to those who might want to learn a foreign language, some FSI material has become public domain. The courses are somewhat outdated as they are from the 50s, but there are many different languages available. You can find the courses in websites like this:

Hitler was elected. He was not democratically elected. A huge difference.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_federal_election said:
Federal elections were held in Germany on 6 November 1932.[1] They saw a significant drop in votes for the Nazi Party and increases for the Communists and the national conservative DNVP. It was the last free and fair all-German election before the Nazi seizure of power on 30 January 1933, as the following elections of March 1933 were already accompanied by massive suppression, especially against Communist and Social Democratic politicians. The next free election was not held until August 1949 in West Germany; the next free all-German elections took place in December 1990 after reunification.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_federal_election said:
Federal elections were held in Germany on 5 March 1933. The 1933 poll was held after the Nazi seizure of power and the Reichstag fire, just six days before the election. Nazi stormtroopers had unleashed a campaign of violence against the Communist Party (KPD), left-wingers,[1]:317 trade unionists, the Social Democratic Party of Germany,[1] and the centre-right Catholic Centre Party.[1]:322

The 1933 election followed the previous year's two elections (July and November) and Hitler's appointment as Chancellor. In the months before the 1933 election, brownshirts and SS displayed "terror, repression and propaganda [...] across the land",[1]:339 and Nazi organizations "monitored" the vote process. In Prussia 50,000 members of the SS, SA and Stahlhelm were ordered to monitor the votes by acting Interior Minister Hermann Göring, as auxiliary police.[2]

If France can help us defeat the far right I'll spend the rest of my life pushing for us to return the favor and build a monument to the French people. And call it the Statue of Egalite and Fraternite or something.

Edit: Now that I think about it more, two statues would be better. The Statue of Egality and the Statue of Fraternity.
