Hillary Clinton recommended Romney to take the Secretary of State job

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Democrat Hillary Clinton encouraged Mitt Romney to take a job as President Donald Trump's secretary of state, the former Republican presidential candidate said Friday.

Romney, speaking to a high-powered gathering of GOP officials, top donors and business leaders at a luxury Utah resort, said that when Trump briefly considered him late last year for Clinton's former job, Romney called "virtually all the former secretaries of state" including Clinton.

"In each case, each of them said, 'Please, please take that job if it's offered to you,'" Romney said, drawing laughs from the crowd. "We would very much like to see you serve in that capacity."

Romney had been one of Trump's most strident critics in the 2016 election, calling him a phony and a fraud. But he later seemed to embrace Trump when he was considered for the top diplomatic job. When the billionaire and reality TV star held a private dinner with Romney late last year, the former Massachusetts governor praised the president-elect.

Romney said he was concerned that he and Trump were "miles apart" on foreign policy, disagreeing about approaches to Syria, NATO, North Korea, and China, but he hoped Trump would be open to other opinions.

"Why would I consider it?" Romney said Friday. "It's not as if I suddenly had a differing view at that point of the president and the things that I had felt about him in the past."

It's gotten to the point where top GOP officials are laughing at the idea of having to work for Trump.

Romney might have actually been able to at least slow down Trump's systematic destruction of all of our foreign relationships, but it's obvious why he didn't want the position

The Jebs, Romneys, and Kasichs of the right who never endorsed Trump but also never offered much more than platitudes of protest after his nomination deserve their irrelevance.

They don't have my support, they don't have my respect, and they haven't earned the right to say "I told you so."

I like how when Clinton is one of many doing a thing, the story always becomes Hillary Clinton Did a Thing!

Romney is literally better than anyone else Trump could have picked.

Would he?

McCain still bends over backwards for Trump, Romney would just act as his personal door mat.

Romney while being a fuck, isn't a dumbfuck. He at least understands things. Which is sorely needed in the US government. But he was right. Trump would have shat on him at every opportunity and would have made him look like a fool. Something Rex is perfectly ok with because he's a little bitch.

Not really. People thought Rex Tillerson would be a horrendous Secretary of State but he has been surprisingly competent and knows America's role in diplomacy, and yet he hasn't been able to stop the trainwreck that is Trump. As long as Donald J. Trump is Commander in Chief and President, no matter who is secretary of state, secretary of defense, it is all going downhill. Mattis spends more time reassuring allies rather than actually working on defense. People like Pence and Tillerson are just routinely trying to put out Trump fires.

This really isn't true. SecState Tillerson has been a stuffed suit presiding of a neutered organization that he failed to lift a finger to defend, and it's clear as day that the State Department doesn't have any power over foreign policy in the Trump presidency.

I think McCain and Christie are in their own special category of being little bitches.

I don't think Romney would have necessarily bent over backwards, but like other people have said, he probably would have been just as ineffectual as every other Trump appointment who tries to reel him in. I was probably being too optimistic saying he could slow down Trump, as sad as that is

I think everyone wanted a relatively sane person in the chain of succession.

It's pretty clear at this point that if Trump can make McMaster just about void the entire point of his career, there's nobody he'll leave undestroyed. He probably figured out pretty quick that Trump was going to use it as an opportunity to stunt on him instead of working as a head of the state department.

Romney would have absolutely bent the knee. What the fuck?

He hasn't been mustache-twirlingly evil, which was pretty much the expectation so with that being the standard Tillerson is being judged against I'd say the post you quoted is correct. That is still a horrible thing, but it's not as bad as it seemed like it was going to be.

Also it was pretty well leaked that Trump wanted Romney to publically kiss the ring to get the job and Romney was all "nope"

That is exactly my point. Romney would have been the exact same and not done anything Tillerson hasn't been able to do. As long as Trump is President, US diplomatic leadership is in decline around the globe.

If even someone like Mattis can't stop Trump from saying dumb shit about the military, NATO, US defense obligations around the globe, no other Secretary of Defense would be either. Like someone else already said, Romney would have been more high profile than Tillerson, but he would have bent the knee as well. Trump decides what is what. The rest are just there to put out the fires he creates.

They all understood what Romney didn't. That he needed to take it because he didn't agree with Trump and would be high profile enough to keep the other countries in their side.

It wasn't just Clinton. It was Kerry, Clinton, Powell, Rice, Albright and more. I guess Clinton mattered more because she was a previous SoS. Of course, the real story is so many wanted him to take it because they were rightfully scared of who Trump would pick.

There's a big difference between the way McCain acted towards Trump and the way Romney did.

While McCain was giving lukewarm endorsements of Trump, Romney was strongly denouncing him. Not to mention one of the reasons Trump didn't pick Romney was because he didn't want to "kiss the ring".

If Romney even offered to take the job of SoS for someone so horrid, it's because he thought he could keep Trump's foreign policy halfway sane. But Trump knew that, which is why he went for someone like Tillerson.
