Big games as a service titles are among my favorites so needless to say I'm pretty damn excited to see more of this

As someone who feels inherently kinda disinterested but admittedly has not played them, could you tell me what it is you love about them?
 
Interested in seeing more tomorrow if only because the teaser was very uninteresting and generic, especially compared to the Black Panther teaser... :p
 
I hate Destiny so I'm probably gonna skip this. It also doesn't help that the game looks generic as hell.

As someone that loved Destiny and pre-ordered Destiny 2, I admit Destiny wasn't on my radar until it was literally launching because everything shown of the game previously looked boring AF. I have no idea what made me buy it except maybe game drought.

I understand what you mean by the Anthem teaser, generic as hell, hopefully there is a beta (probably Xbox first) on all platforms.

I'll definitely give the game a shot when the beta comes out but I'm not expecting much.

The thing is, BioWare Edmonton has been working on this as long as BioWare Montreal was doing Andromeda. This was the first we have even seen of the game. So they are also on a 5+ year development timeframe with no idea when this even comes. After Andromeda, BioWare went from day one preorder to wait for $19.99 price after one year etc.

When I have the time, I actually do enjoy games-as-service types a lot, specifically Destiny. One of the reasons that a game like Destiny can work so well is that for us 21st century gamer nerds, it replaces the age old, dudely-manly tradition of "Poker Night," except instead of The Boys getting together on a Friday or Saturday night by all driving down to one guy's house and snacking, talking and generally enjoying each other's company through the nominal excuse of playing cards over and over again, people who may be childhood friends/highschool/college buddies separated by timezones can meet up, run around shooting things and each other, while still interacting and talking about stuff.

Combine that with traditional gamer hamster wheels like grinding obsessively for loot, or trying to get through a raid for loot, but with friends, and it does have a certain appeal. However, it is a time-sink, so I've personally had an on again-off again ability to play it regularly with friends.

Sorry for chiming in. However its worth mentioning that "Games as a Service" is actually a rather broad term that can mean lots of different things and there are a lot of different GaaS buisness models. For instance there is the Overwatch/Rocket League model which is essentially just loot microtransactions to fund map packs and/or server costs depending on how stingy the company making the game as a service is.

Other games use it to add periodic challenges with specific rewards so you can keep playing your favourite single player games longer. IE. Have you reached level 100 in your favourite RPG? Games as a service might release monthly Super bosses so you can continue to play at max level.

Then there is the Shared World model which is very MMO lite. Essentially its a traditional party based RPG, but your friends can play too via online (IE Borderlands/Destiny)

This shared world model is the most popular since it essentially is saying. If you and 3 friends love a game like Mass Effect, now instead of playing buy yourself and talking about it. You can play as Shepard, while your friends play co operatively with you as Tali and Garrus.

Its fun because its like sharing a classic RPG experience with your friends and never having to worry about bad companion AI.

Edit: Destiny gets mentioned a lot, because as of right now it is the best example of this concept. Its not perfect, but its the blueprint.

I love online games. I love games I play for years on a daily and weekly basis, playing with friends, tons of content, and a reason to keep coming back.

Between just Overwatch and Destiny alone I'm sitting at about 800 hours of game time. That's a hell of a lot of bang for your buck.

Difficult to tell but I think that might have been sarcasm.

I'm excited to see more tomorrow. Not sure why people ever thought this was an XB1/Scorpio exclusive though. They would've said explicitly if that was the case.

I think it probably has to do with the dismay over ME: Andromeda. I actually enjoyed DA: Inquisition, but I know a lot of people saw it as a misstep and hoped BioWare would redeem itself with Andromeda, then that didn't happen either, so now a lot of people are far less confident about Anthem knocking it out of the park.

Honestly based off the teaser it did nothing for me. But to be fair I'm not the type of audience that cares for sci-fi shit like that. I like human futuristic, once I see characters in full body suits it's a quick turnoff.

The opening shot of that wall, I could have sworn I was somehow accidentally watching a Destiny 2 trailer.

They should have gone in fully committed and called the game Fate instead of Anthem.

Well tomorrow at the press conference, I hope we see an extended gameplay demonstration. Project Dylan unmasked, Hudson and his team are bringing something fierce. I like the aesthetic, hopefully the game is really interesting.

It's precisely the type of "fun" which I tend to avoid when playing games, at least for the first time. Which is also why I'm completely uninterested in all these fancy GaaS growing like mushrooms all around recently.

I get it, since i am more of a single player person as well. However Games as a service can shine in that regard too. Take for instance Injustice 2.

It has a games as a service online single player mode which basically adds a Diablo style loot grind to its fighting mechanics, and then uses this loot to create difficulty modifiers. Its not balanced from a 1 on 1 fighting perspective. However for solo players who want to continue to play injustice 2 by themselves after completing the campaign it offers consistent and new challenges that help keep you motivated to keep playing consistently in a game you otherwise may have dropped due to lack of content.

I don't think the idea of a wall had anything to do with Trump. To be fair, there's probably a list of fantasy/sci-fi stories that involve a "wall" separating humanity from something bad. Haha.

No, no, I appreciate you chiming in! If Anthem gives me a story and sense of progression anywhere near as satisfying as Mass Effect, I'll be pretty happy. Although I wonder if we won't be seeing defined companions like Garrus and Tali here? Ah, so many questions right now.

I appreciate the time you took to explain everything! I can see the appeal behind getting something of an old poker game going online with friends who live far away. Personally, I think I'll take the poker game (or local multiplayer) whenever possible, but as I no longer live in the same metro area as my best friends back in Florida, this strikes a chord with me. And my friend and I had a lot of fun doing Battlefront together last year, too. So there's that.

But I don't want to play the same game for more than some 10-20 hours, it's totally not what I want as I have more than enough games which I haven't even launched once on my HDD. Dropping a title after completing its SP portion is what I do all the time since this is basically the only portion that is of any interest to me. It's also why I despise the recent trend of adding unskippable filler content in games like DAI and MEA - which happen to be from the same Bioware which is making Anthem now so chances are that it'll be both full of filler and of GaaS stuff as well.

Online focus has killed half my interest.

What? Is this exclusive? I thought it was a multiplatform game but seems that MS got the marketing deal so they will make the full reveal in their conference.

Even the font they used looks just like Titanfall's.

Do we know if its Third or First person? Safe in assuming bioware are sticking to what they know?

We'll find out soon enough, but my total guess is third-person with a potential first-person option.

Also, sorry if it's old hat now, but where is the spring 2018 stuff coming from? Super curious about that!

Could go either way. Of the current GaaS games we have the results have been mixed. Gearbox (Borderlands/Battleborn) likes to use a hero shooter framework where each player plays as a specific character rather then class. Destiny uses a character creator and you then choose you class and customise your appearance.

Others split the difference and have a character creator MC but defined party members, (Xenoblade X) while others just drop the MC into other peoples games antagonisticly (Soulsbourne, Watchdogs 1+2)

Personally i prefer the Hero Shooter model with defined characters as it tends to make storytelling easier then having to explain why all 30M or so Destiny players are the chosen one. Not sure which direction Bioware will take it though.
