Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

People who thought it would be cheaper only have themselves to blame.

I don't know.

In the mass market i think there is an acceptance of affordability - and here in the uk that price barrier is £350. The history is there to show that - ps3, x1 having a notoriously difficult time. Sony even priced the Pro there ( i think).

You could argue that the Scorpio will be a niche product entirely aimed at the hardest of hardcore gamer - but the way that Microsoft have hyped this thing feels more inline with a new generation of consoles. Not quite there but more than a simple upgrade for sure.

$499 seems perfectly reasonable considering the Pro being at $399 with less power.

And once again part of neogaf doesn't disappoint with comments like DOA etc. MS has marketed the Scorpio as a premium product from the start...

IF this price is real. They better have an amazing conference, but still. That won't matter if this thing is $500. People can play all those games on the cheaper One S

Lol no way geoff would be allowed to just leak the biggest thing about the scorpio. This is dorito pope PRing for MS by "leaking" a higher price so MS can look extra good when they announce 399.

It´s Microsoft, damage control before the match even starts

of course it´s gonna be 499

It's better to be lied to by a corporation than to accept that said corporation is willing to sell a product at a higher price than you'd like.

OK.

$500 is more acceptable at the start of a generation in my mind. This console is really just for 2-3 years until Sony or Microsoft launch the next generation.

y'all should be ashamed
LMFAO the $400 pro didn't sell out and you honestly think a $500 second-place machine will?

I would love to hear your logic on that one...
Xbox fans are willing to buy Elite controllers. They are thirsty for new hardware, way more than PS4 owners ever were. They will sell out this holiday.

Now, after the holidays, it'll sink like a stone, but this holiday was locked whether it was $299 or $499.

So has anyone on Twitter asked him why he tweeted this info over anything else he knows?

I think it a fair question.

It's the main reason I think it's possibly controlled.

Frankly Geoff probably knows almost every game we will see at both MS and Sony's conferences. It just is very weird he specifically leaked this one thing.

Well, if that's the case, then 499 makes sense and they should just stick to their guns. That's that the OG Xbone launched at afterall (but that did include the Kinect)

This console is definitely going to put Xbox at the top of the heap when it comes to power for the remainder of this gen and I guess if that is another one of their goals, then they'll certainly accomplish that, plus the low sales to a limited audience they're targetting

Good point. People always say "it runs better on pc", which is inaccurate to the point of being deceptive*, but it gives pc an aura. Maybe the same will happen for Xbox as a whole despite X1 being a wet noodle.

*To be accurate: "it runs better on pc if it has powerful enough components and the game has been optimised for that particular hardware config."

Am I the only person on this forum who thinks that $499 is a reasonable price for what we're presumably getting?

I guarantee that it will sell just fine to early adopters at $499, and then when that market is saturated they'll drop the price to appeal to a broader base.

It's not that it's an unreasonable price, but that it is not a competitive price.

And by the time there's a price drop, we'll be on the cusp of a new generation. Only way this makes sense is if it is an earnest attempt to end the console generation cycle.

Scorpio wouldn't sell much more than the Pro even at $400. It's a niche console even at that price. It's aimed at enthusiasts, not the general public, no matter how hard MS is pushing it.

It wouldn't even sell more with price parity, given that it's still an Xbox One.

Still, launching at such a price point without exclusives and without new Xbox One first party highlights outside of CD3 and Forza 7, which are unlikely to attract new users and seem more targeted at the existing user base, makes me wonder why they are hyping the system so hard. Right now looks like they are making Xbox more and more into a niche product without global attraction.

This a controlled leak to temper expectations.

Base model will be 399 and pro model with elite controller will be 499.

If not then Microsoft are in serious trouble and Sony just got dealt an easy hand again,

Moms and pops ain't buying no Xbox for 500 bucks

Some of you are making me want to tear my fro out.

The moms and pops buy the $299 console that plays the same freaking games. Little Timmy is still in nappies, so I'm sure he won't notice the difference between 1080p and 1440p.

He's also not old enough to come crying to neogaf about how he experienced a few frame drops in Lego star wars.

The PS4Pro is $399...

Microsoft has to pay for a +UHD player + More Memory + Secret Sauce CPU + Bigger custom GPU + Custom Cooling....

I mean the price for the spec vs the completion adds up but MS need to sell the thing as well and like we've seen a couple of times in the past, $499 is DoA especially when you have a much stronger and cheaper competitor. I doubt Sony could get away with a PSPro+ at that price either though.

Considering how much hype and prominence MS has given it, you'd think they'd be pushing the price hard too but $499 would be super niche. Not forgetting Sony still has their Pro price cut card to play this Fall.

I doubt it would sell at that price in Europe. Here in the Netherlands Xbox One is dead in the water anyway, no one would pay double for it. No way. Maaaybe at €400. He might be confident about that price, but I have my doubts.

Hm. I never thought of it from this angle. That it's Microsoft trying to shift a bit of expectation pre-press conference so the price doesn't hit so hard.

But man, that doesn't change the fact that the E3 teaser led specifically and clearly intentionally to a "Less Than $400" clue. I'm torn.

Interesting.
I don't know what it's going to offer but it sounds like a bad idea to have it that price point. A really bad idea. They better have megaton announcements for games or..... yeesh

What if Phil's intent is to make money, not one up Sony?

Pretty much what I expected. Phil and MS have been positioning Scorpio as a premium product since its announcement, no way this thing wasn't gonna be pricey.
