Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Probably Geoff but it could also be a diversionary tactic in place for their reherseal

Well I don't know if that is Geoff's real account here or not, but let's say they did rehearse this portion and that is what they said and what Geoff heard. By Geoff posting the words "that is what they rehearsed", Geoff just covered himself if it turns out to be something different. All Geoff would have to say is that he was at the rehearsal and that is what they said. Regardless if $499 is true or not, don't think Geoff is going to take any hits regardless.

I think $499.99 is a fair price, but $399.99 for the mainstream would be better. I am of the belief that $499.99 is the launch edition with a 2tb 7200rpm drive.

My comment didn't say that the average consumer will buy the most powerful console disregarding the price.

There's virtually no other interpretation for your comment that I can see. Unless you meant the average consumer asks for the most powerful console, sees it costs 499, and then doesn't buy it? What's the point of that comment?

I honestly don't understand the outrage over 499. This is a premium product. 499 is pretty cheap for what you're getting.

You don't release a premium product at that price while dragging behind in market share. If sony didnt, when they had every reason to, why should MS?

Guys, the price is $499 and that is what has been rehearsed.

I feel like most of the people in denial about your leak are like this:

I guess the question is if you can wait until like March to get one when it is inevitably not $499. Buying an Xbone at launch was a huge mistake for me. Price dropped super fast and the launch software sucked. Why not wait until March to play UnitedHealth from Bioware?

So uhm, are you supposed to ban Geoff Keighley if he turns out to be wrong...?

Thanks for jumping in Geoff.

$499 is a mistake. The only thing that could hangs my thinking here is if it came with an Elite controller and 2TB hard drive.

It's not a mistake.

If you think it's a mistake then this product is simply not for you. It's for the hardcore fans who want their games including third party games to be running well. For those fans who want the best third party versions.

I'm glad MS haven't gone the cheap route.

Also I don't believe that "things can change" last minute. Unless they were purposefully "rehearsing" a price to stop leakers, the price is determined after like years of number crunching and planning. You don't go, "Shit, price sounds bad," and change it last minute.

Especially after you have to pay for exclusive comarketing with Cigna from Bioware.

Its not even coming March 2018 anymore, it has been delayed

Ok then Fall 2018 with Aetna from Bioware.

The average consumer doesn't look at consoles as first place or second place machines. That's what fanboys think like. The average consumer will simply ask for the most powerful console. Which will be the Scorpio.

Average consumers will ask for the cheapest system. Especially during the holidays when most consumers are shopping for more than one person (for gifts and stuff.)

What I don't get is that, if we're getting price numbers out of rehearsals, why aren't we also getting the name at the same time. Surely, those two bits of information would be in the same paragraph if not the same sentence?

Pretty fair question... Maybe they used obvious placeholders there, but if they did, they would throw the price into a placeholder-y light too.

Did you see how they'll sell that price? I just can't imagine how they'd think Phil Spencer going on stage and saying 499 again would be a good idea.

It's not crippling because Scorpio is an Xbox One. It might have a different name or be more powerful, but this is not a next gen product, it's their current gen product with bells and whistles for the kind of enthusiast who owns a 4K display and cares about maximizing fidelity.

The consumer base they're pricing out can just buy the Xbox One S for all they care.

Wow, I was really convinced they were doing $400 - These leaks always seem to turn out true but I'm excited to see if they'll throw a curveball and change it at the last minute, like Sony in 1995 - but I still plan on buying it anyway. Possibility of it being bundled with an Elite controller or some other expensive thing (like they did that other time)

They are just gonna have to drop $100 off it like they did for xbox one. This 'premium consumer who plays the most games for the most hours' they are describing plays on PC already... There are a couple die hards that will buy this, but it will ultimately be DOAAAA

It's the magic of competition. Securing digital libraries is a lucrative idea. Maybe it's worth taking a small hit on profits.
Console makers got burned last gen doing that and aren't going to repeat. All are taking page out of Nintendo's book and pricing to make profit or near break even.

Btw, people who are cost conscious are not buying the premium product. Scorpio is for those who want power without regard to price. You can see many of them in this thread. $499 will not deter those people.

Oh btw part 2. $499 lets Microsoft offer up sales later. If they start out with a sale price they have nowhere to go. Oh course MS is going to start with a higher price and milk those willing to pay it.

$499 is fine for the performance they are targetting. But if they want any sort of mass adoption they will need to go lower.

what if they faked the entire rehearsal and no one knows what's going to be in the presser?

They drugged Geoff and took him to a fake rehearsal. The real rehearsal was across town. That's the last time Geoff goes out for drinks with the Russian ambassador.

1) This "leak" by a well-known person has already created a bit of buzz around the new console. This thread alone has got 1500 replies in a relatively short period of time.

2) Now people want to check the news and watch the show to see if the price leak is true.

3) People watching the show are then "surprised" that the console price is actually lower than expcted.

4) Give the initial rumoured premium price of $499, people now see the actual price of 399 as a bargain compared to the expensive 499.

It's a win-win-win-win. So marketing wise, there are plenty of reasons.
This. Is. Fucking. Awesome.

So uhm, are you supposed to ban Geoff Keighley if he turns out to be wrong...?

How about they ban you instead?

Can't stand people asking for valuable members of the gaming community to be banned. Geoff is just telling us what he's been told. He has insiders in the media. What has he got to gain by telling false stories?
