Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

I imagine it is $499, as PS4 Pro is currently $399. So with it being so much more powerful, with more RAM and probably 4K drive, it think it is unlikely to have same price as the PS4 Pro, even with releasing a year later.

I hope it is at most £399 though.

I know Geoff won't comment any further here but it's gotta be one of the strangest, weirdest leaks ever, very suspicious. Hell I wouldn't call it a leak at all, he just came out of the blue like he works for MS.

why now? why that specific info? who is behind this? why does MS allow it?

Hi. I am Geoff Keighley. I am one of the biggest voices in gaming. Let me say something I know will devalue my credibility just hours before an official announcement.

If it somehow ended up at $399 nobody would consider his credibility damaged. Clearly his info came from someone at MS and he would therefore be viewed as someone getting played, in a way everyone would be happy about. The scenario where his cred would evaporate would be something more akin to him hyping something specific up only for that thing to totally disappoint. If he is wrong, this would be the opposite scenario.

I'm still calling bullshit.

Is it going to get better support than Pro from 3rd party developers? I get it has more power but these developers arent incentivized to spend more money on making it look better since most folks are buying on base hardware (PS4/Xbox One S)

My final take away from all this:

Microsoft: This is why you don't announce a console almost a year and a half in advance!

You not only let your competition undercut you completely (whether or not the Pro was planned in response to the Scorpio is irrelevant since it still came out first), it makes your fanbase create such unrealistic expectations that when it comes time to actually announce price and features it will just disappoint them.

What I don't know is what's in the configuration for $499. But that's where it's starting.

I don't leak games because I would never do that to game creators -- they deserve their moment. This is different, it's the price of a piece of hardware.

Ok so without leaking anything, how good is MS conference gonna be tonight? Gotta be better than EA's yesterday right?

It's either going to be $499 or Keighley will have burned any and all journo cred he has in the face of being a blatant MS shill to support the bait and switch for extra hype.

I'd be shocked if he participated in that unless they gave him an absurd amount of money. It only helps MS while hurting him professionally.

If Geoff wasn't 100% sure of it and checked out the rumor he wouldn't have posted it with the chance of hurting his credibility. So he's either in cahoots with MS or he's right
Being in cahoots with MS would also hurt his credibility, so I can only conclude that he has good reason to believe his information is accurate.

I mean, the specs are better than the Pro. Is an extra $100 really going to break the bank of the people this system is targeting?

Microsoft: If you think $499 is too expensive you never were part of the target audience.

But seriously , I dont think they are insane at Microsoft so they must be going for a really niche market.

Guys, the price is $499 and that is what has been rehearsed.

It's definitely best to get it out now and not have it deflate hype at the presser, but it's hard to imagine having to stand there and say the exact same number from 2013, especially given the reaction to it then.

So, going in to the event with the knowledge of $499 behind us, we can at least let that hype earn back the $100 somewhat, let the salesman earn his crust.

It needs exclusive games plus a 400 dollar version, plus more power at that price.

If the power, games, visuals and games were simply mind blowing.. It would definitely sell well

But I'm not expecting the leap it has to be that. Sure, they will be looking better but not enough at those specs.

I was going to buy if $399.99 but $499.99 to me is a bit too expensive.

I might just stick with my Pro but I will wait and see what games they announced first. I hope they blow me away and I do indeed part with the cash.

I am surprised that he would tweet this. Doesn't he normally have relationships with inside sources that would tell him this info as long as he wouldn't tell everyone lol You know, like an embargo?

To soften the blow and prepare expectations.

Didn't Sony decide to go for 399 after MS announced the Xbone for 499 or am I misremembering?

Does it seem likely to you that Sony watched the MS presser and just decided to knock $100 of their price , or does it seem more likely that it was always $399 ?

I'm going with ruse on MS's part poor GK isn't aware that this is 5 hours of MS and Phil gauging reactions on Twitter, Facebook and various gaming sites. Then Phil saying see we are screwed at this $499 price point and that's where the $449 comes in.

Still #team$399

It is the 2TB model bundled with Crackdown.

Everybody is happy.

Anyone tweet Phil, Aaron Greenberg, Major or Mike Ybrarra that Geoff is saying $499.99? Just curious if anyone has attempted to tweet one of these guys to let them know there is currently a meltdown happening over at Gaf because of what Geoff has said. I would do it, but I don't tweet. It would be funny to see if they stay silent or they respond.

So $83 per teraflop then I guess.

And by that measure, Scorpio is a steal :)

Xbox One S: $199 / 1.3 TF = $153 per TF
PS4 Slim: $249 / 1.84 TF = $135 per TF
PS4 Pro: $399 / 4.2 TF = $95 per TF
Xbox Scorpio: $499 / 6 TF = $83 per TF

No shot. His cred is gone if this is just a bait and switch tactic, because there is no way he doesn't know about it if so.

Keighley is not new to the game.

There you go. 499.

Yeah, the corporate decision to lose $100 per unit in profit happened at the spur of a moment when MS announced the Xbox One's price. This is often how multi billion dollar companies do business.

I'm still #team399. Geoff is fake news :)

If that is the case, I do not understand their market position. Will wait to see presentation though. $499 is an astronomical buy in these days.
Still sounds like something EA would prefer to divert the brunt of their resources towards supporting vs. the Switch and "their unprecedented relationship with Nintendo".

Microsoft's campaign for the Scorpio has already been a little bit bizarre, is it really out of the question for them to rehearse a fake price? In fact, didn't Sony do this with the original Playstation?

SO Geoff leaked the price of what was in the rehearsal, but not the games,m not even a tease and not the console name.

That is fucking weird.

Though I believe the 499€, this all reeks of something fishy
