Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Why is the scorpion facing the opposite direction when he lifts his foot? Diversion? 399 confirmed????

As a Pro owner who bought the console for $399, I would not have seen $499 as a deterrent. If you want to have the enthusiast experience, an extra $100 won't stop you.

this. It really is meant for the enthusiast, the one who would also pay 150 bucks for an elite controller.

To me it's more likely MS wanted this leak, to soften the blow of any sticker shock during the reveal of those hoping for $399.

The average consumer doesn't look at consoles as first place or second place machines. That's what fanboys think like. The average consumer will simply ask for the most powerful console. Which will be the Scorpio.

Not sure I agree. The "average consumer" will, in my opinion, focus on getting the best deal / the system which lets them play with their mates more than power.

If MS is pitching Scorpio at $499, and Sony cut PS4 Pro to $349 (even if just for the holidays) then the average consumer is gonna see the $150 difference in price and wonder what extra they're getting for their money. The trouble is, the sort of difference between going from a 4k checkerboard game to a 4k native game isn't really going to show the average consumer a whole lot - I would bet that the majority of "average consumers" wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 4k CB and 4k native.

This is MS' problem - if Sony price cut PS4 Pro (which they may very well do) then MS is going to need something absolutely jaw dropping to make Scorpio stand out, given it could cost $150 more.

Looks like they've learned their lesson from last time. When they had announced the XB1 price tag, Sony's riposte was devastating and served to intensify the media backlash against MS. They're not going to compete for Sony's demographic and suffer an embarrassing counter-punch again; MS will cater their efforts to a more niche clientele and gradually cultivate a loyal userbase from there.

What I don't know is what's in the configuration for $499. But that's where it's starting.

I don't leak games because I would never do that to game creators -- they deserve their moment. This is different, it's the price of a piece of hardware.

So much work to turn it all around after the original XB1 unveil fiasco. All for nothing. That price is too high. No matter how they try to explain the price it'll still be too high and the sales will reflect that very clearly at the dip after the early adopters has bought it. No preorder for me MS, sorry.

Can't it still be subjected to change last minute?

Especially based off of the reactions this price is getting on the internet right now?

From what I remember Sony didn't have the PS4 final price locked in until Microsoft revealed the Xbox One price right?

You are remember a (bad) GAF conspiracy theory.

No company the size of MS and SOny can just plan these launches for years and then go "oh fuck the internet is mad , lets just drop $100 off the price" just like that.

I think the reasoning for leaking it is to get the bad news out of the way first before the conference. The internet goes nuts and then the conference starts and they can show off the games.

1080s are sub $450 and even sub $400 these days if you follow sales.

But you still need the CPU, power, casing, etc. And you need to put the time in to put it all together, install software, and optimize games.

Scorpio? You plug it in and get instant 4K 60fps. For cheaper.

I think someone as big and prevalent as him would not leak something like that right before the conference unless there was a twist.

I'm for 449

Wait

are we going to get a 599 moment

That is very well said. Thanks again.

I know Geoff won't comment any further here but it's gotta be one of the strangest, weirdest leaks ever, very suspicious. Hell I wouldn't call it a leak at all, he just came out of the blue like he works for MS.

why now? why that specific info? who is behind this? why does MS allow it?

$499 is clearly bad news for how Scorpio has been framed by the enthusiast community online. It makes a lot of sense in terms of PR to get the bad news out there ahead of time to give folks time to digest it and let the sting out a bit. This is common practice. I suppose one could wonder why have Geoff put it out there instead of official PR though.

Maybe this is Geoff's doing all on his own? Maybe he knows the price point and realizes it will slow momentum down so he is trying to help us position our expectations so it's not as big a letdown? He is certainly someone who has experience trying to manage audiences' expectations.

I believe Geoff and $499, but why did he feel the need to announce it? What possessed him to do it?

Not surprising, but they could have turned some heads with a lower price. This thing is going to be even more niche at this price point.

For what they're offering compared to PS4 Pro, the price difference is understandable, but this will not change market share for them compared to PS4. Unless they could start relying on emphasizing 60fps, such as saying Destiny 2 on Scorpio would run at 60fps, but I don't see that happening due to the CPU. This hurt my excitement :(

Was there ever confirmation that this was going to be single SKU?

I still have this gut feeling they are going to do what they did for the S. Launch the high end SKU to get the early adopters, then one (or two) lower SKUs shortly after, in time for holiday season.

$499 launch edition - October 6th or 13?
449/399 editions with smaller HD - October 20th or 27?

You forget paying for Xbox Live and their other peripherals limited to Xbox where they gather profit from too

Not necessarily. It could also mean that the 499 price tag is the upper model, right? Geoff stated that he does not know what exaclty in the 499 package.

No, he said "starting" at 499. You don't start at 499 and have a 399 sku...
