Life is Strange: Before the Storm - 8 Minutes of Gameplay

I was scared after hearing Ashly Burch wasn't reprising her role as Chloe but whoever they got sounds enough like Burch that I think I'm okay with it.

The voice acting is kinda ehhh... not so great. Kinda flat. Not feeling it. I thought LiS had pretty good VO overall, this definitely feels worse to me.

Rachel's VA is AWFUL. And I do think this game would be better from Rachel's POV. But I'm still gonna get it

This looks kinda rough. But then again, adventure games rarely demo well, and I remember thinking the same thing about the first LiS gameplay back in 2014. Shaking the feeling of this whole prequel feeling pointless is a different story.

Yeah, I agree. I feel like this could be a sort of Fire Walk with Me situation (in reference to Twin Peaks, for those who don't know), having you play a doomed character whose story concludes with her death, but maybe they were afraid of going that dark? I'm just not sure what's as interesting about Chloe going from being kind of rebel-wannabe to being a bad girl-but-really-a-bad girl. For only 3 episodes I'll probably buy it to support the brand, unless it is just truly awful or something.

I really feel like they should have waited until they could get better voice talent.

This kind of game suffers from it more than any other.

wow... this just seems like a shitty cash in :/ Not feeling it.. are they making Life is Strange 2 in the mean time, or is this the planned sequel?

Graphics look really rough. Is this the one by the not-DONTNOD developer?

Yup, Idol Minds is the dev. here.

I was kind of curious on who's writing this prequel, and turns out the lead writer (Zak Garriss) worked on some parts of Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning. Interesting, I guess.

Dontnod is working on LiS2, this prequel is handled by Idol Minds.

This is a prequel spin off by a different developer, Life is Strange 2 by Don't Nod is still on its way.

I am VERY conflicted. LiS is one of my favourite gaming experiences ever, it touched me on an emotional level. Not a lot of things can do this, especially games. But I don't want it to be tarnished in any way, it's a precious memory for me. Plus it is not made by the original developer. Maybe I should really skip this, even though I am a LiS fanboy.

Same here. Just not sure about this game.

Something's missing without Ashly Burch to voice Chloe. We're not even going to talk about Rachel's...

It's all very conflicting, unfortunately.

Episode 5 spoilers for season 1
if it leads all the way up to season one's start Chloe gets killed too. Unless they want to leave that open to not have to pick a canonical ending to the first season.

voice actors strike

Seriously? So Ashley Burch went on strike to protect her job, but then still decided to collaborate with the developer on the script, happily allowing a non-unionised voice actor to go in and undercut Burch's own job. What the fuck?

I'm not sure Burch understands why she went on strike in the first place....

really bruh first 8 mins of gameplay shown and we already get a friendship or something more choice

hopefull this doesn't end up feeling like some cringe fanfiction

I don't mind Rachel's VA that much.. but I don't like what they're showing of the character.. May wait until all 3 episodes are out and see what the consensus is before I take the plunge.

She is not going on a strike to protect her job. I think you need to read up on why they are on strike in the first place

Err yes she is? I know all about the strike thanks. VAs are working very hard to be treated in the same way as other actors and performers, and residuals are a very important part of that. And the fact that actors are often expected to negotiate contracts in secret, without know what the game is or what sort of impact it will have commercially, is absolutely insane. Amongst many other issues.

Voice actors need to be protected on the same terms as all actors- not on the same terms as everyone else in the profit hungry, race-to-the-bottom video games industry. Supporting VAs will help others involved in the industry achieve better working conditions. Video games are one of the most profitable entertainment industries- there is no reason why those involved should have worse working and pay conditions than workers in less profitable sectors of the arts and entertainment industry.

Hang on, Chloe got a different voice? I'm somewhat glad, because that tips the scale to "ignore and keep the good memories of LiS intact" for me. Chloe was an amazing character, and the voice actress did a fantastic job.

Didn't want to spoil myself too much about the game, but all this talk about Rachel's VA made me curious.

And yes, the voice does not seem to fit the character, and it sort of clashes with young Chloe's one. Also, her visual design looks a bit rough/unfinished. Certainly not as unique and detailed as other characters in the first LIS. But then again, it's just an early impression.

This thing checks so many boxes signifying potential flop (for fans, I mean) that it almost reaches an inflection point where I'm actually becoming intrigued.

We can only speculate as to why, but people gotta eat. And I also believe that Burch cares a lot and is emotionally invested in this project. I really don't begrudge her for this, even if I support the strike 100%.
