Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

Honestly I enjoyed this movie way much more overall than the first movie. The first movie is easily funnier and maybe this one should have laid back a bit on the jokes but the character development on this was so. fucking. good. Even EGO was amazing like shit. Ego was a fantastic villain compared to Ronan and it was just such a satisfying end.

I didn't mind baby Groot as much as others.

Just saw this yesterday. Loved it.
I still prefer the first, but this is incredibly close to being as good. Great mix of humor and serious moments.
I loved all the screentime Drax and Yondu got, but I wish Gamora and Nebula would have had more time. I liked both characters in the first movie and wanted more.

And Kurt Russell...fuck. Just...fuck. So awesome.

I had my issues. Mainly that I didn't really care about the plot. And the gold people weren't great.

But the characters and villain were fantastic. Overall an excellent addition to the MCU.

Finally saw it. Was only mildly entertained during the first 1/3 or so, but somehow it started, and continued, to grow massively on me. I disagree with people saying this was just more of the same, because to me it felt pretty distinct from the first one, while obviously being a sequel using many of the elements that made the first one such a success.

There was a lack of tension eatly on, it felt like a saturday morning cartoon with the gold people as enemies, with very low stakes compared to the infinity stone in the first. But that really works well when the whole Egon affair starts to kick in. Suddenly it becomes clear what kind of threat this really is to the whole universe and there were some good dramatic climaxes. I think Egon is a strong villain. The gold people were merely an element to the story, but not really count as villains I think (I mean, the Guardians straight up robbed them and then blew up their valuable batteries).

Visually this film is ace. So much variety and a lovely use of colours. After Strange, this one, and undoubtly Thor 3, I really don't think the "all MCU films looks the same" applies anymore. Music was great too, both the score and liscenced stuff.

Could do with a tad less jokes here and there though, film was pushing it at times. The comedy was better in the first one.

So I thought this movie was good not great. It doubles down a bit too much on the music, I think it lacks impact because it's so constant. The plot feels slight and thin, very little actually happens and some of the comedy get stuffed in at inappropriate moments. Having said that, the character beats are generally good and the overall theme works well. Yondu and Drax both really have great scenes. I liked Mantis as well. I think it's a bit of a step down from the first bit still solid.

No where near as good as first. Confirms my belief that it was a fluke the original movie turned out so good.

The I gave her cancer bit was the giant fucking lame topper.

So I thought this movie was good not great. It doubles down a bit too much on the music, I think it lacks impact because it's so constant.

Very much agree. They even fucked this up. It really set a tone for what was happening on screen in the first movie.

Watched today and I love it. I prefer this sequel than the first movie.

The Egon is a good Villain, the characters chemistry are improved a lot and there is so much good scenes of adventure, drama and humor... it's easy one of the best marvel's movies for me.

Even the 5 extra scenes are cool. The only letdown is not reserve one scene to introduce Thor or Avengers 3, but it's not that bad at the end.

A obligatory movie for any fan of Marvel, GotG or hero's movies in general.

Decent movie, little long.

I groaned out loud when he created the ball of energy and they played catch.

That scene is corny if it was played straight but I think it was supposed to be funny since the ball literally took the shape of a football.

It was some

type shit.

Ain't read this thread but I was wondering something. Yondou's death. So he has known Starlord forever and knows he has a helmet that allows him to survive in space and he survived in space in Guardians one? Why did Yondou not press the button for the helmet he most certainly knew about, or let him survive in space like he did in the previous film, why did he needlessly die?

Also guardians one was better, better paced, didn't overstay its welcome by 30 mins and had a better soundtrack. Baby Groot was adorable.

Your kidding right? When Starlord fought Ego it got broken.

Starlord's helmet broke in the fight with ego. It goes by very quickly.

Starlords Helmet broke five minutes prior to Yondus death while he was fighting ego.

Because Quill's helmet had already shattered in the fight with Ego and Yondu's two choices were 'spacesuit' and 'rocket pack'?

Edit: Beaten.

So I finally caught this movie on Sunday (in 3d imax) and my thoughts in a nutshell:

-Love the intro sequence. Very clever way to make 'big fight' a bit different. Stylish.
-Drax is a bit overdone now. Sometimes he BARKS with laughter for 30 seconds straight before delivering a joke. The joke cannot possibly live up to it. Too obnoxious.
-Lots of very funny jokes. But sometimes it tries too hard.
-Liked the father/son/'real father' dynamic
-Great action sequences and very beautiful, especially in 3D IMAX. Surely the only way to see this film
-LOVED the Hasselhoff moment and the Sylvester Stallone cameos. Glad I avoided spoilers as I was not expecting either
-Music was less well used and a bit obvious compared to vol 1 sometimes. Especially when they were talking about the song lyrics. Like, yes, I get it, music was a big part of the first film's success. Actually talking about the song lyrics in the film plot felt weirdly self aware.
-Liked it a lot overall although I do think the first was a touch better overall. I rewatched Guardians 1 on Sunday as well and it felt so serious in comparison, but it actually seemed better balanced for it.

I was in quite a fun audience where there was lots of laughter. I was starting to think the guy behind me was being paid to laugh, he laughed so loud at almost every joke.
Although every joke to do with 'Taserface' including the gold woman laughing at him totally bombed.

Will definitely get the 3D Bluray.

Saw it this afternoon. I don't think it was actively bad, but it dragged and was boring in parts, which is weird to say given the subject matter. The Sovereign stuff really didn't land for me.

I don't think I'll ever bother watching again bit I'm not bothered that I spent part of my afternoon watching it.

It was not as good as the first one, mainly because the soundtrack is not as memorable. The feels were indeed there, I did not expect Karen Gillan to be this good. Michael Rooker deserves a nod too. But what marked the most is the introduction of the original guardians (Charlie-27, Martinex and I don't know the rest) and Adam Warlock!!!! With a Watcher cameo!

Finally got around to seeing this movie. I felt the first half was weak - the lines and humor didn't click with me. I was pretty meh with Drax's LOL moments, liked him better when he was serious. Thankfully it finished really strongly in the second half, so a good experience overall. Visuals were great too.

I liked that the cast were each given a backstory, but strangely some of those moments felt a little clumsy to me, the way a character would just suddenly veer into his/her backstory in the middle of a conversation, complete with close up on their face and sad music starting to play. Peter's relationship with Yondu was done the best, it was presented really naturally.

Setpieces were a definite step up from the first one, Rocket's MGS scene in particular.

I thought this was excellent, probably better than the first one. A couple of the jokes and music beats fell flat, but the majority worked for me. I'm not an MCU / comic fan or anything but this one might be my favorite of the bunch. And Kurt Russell is easily MCU's best villain.

Just saw this last night. I'm a bit of an oddball since I didn't love the first GotG. I certainly liked it, but it isn't one of my favorite MCU movies.

My first impressions with GotG2 weren't great. I think the movie starts off rather slow and while the second half is full of funny jokes, the first half had far more misses than hits in my book. Plus, the jokes that missed tended to be drawn out. I also think most of the action scenes were merely acceptable but hardly note worthy which is rare for a Marvel film.

Still, the movie really picks up after the first hour and I really liked the various character dynamics at place. Ego and Starlord actually made the lost father cliche work and I was actually surprised by the twist that Ego killed Starlord's mother. Rocket and Yundo also had great chemistry and I think Rocket had a really good arc. Really, all of the main characters were good except for Groot who, while not as played out as I feared he'd be, still felt like a cynical attempt at trying to be the next big funny thing for kids. The only other new character besides Ego that really stood out was Mantis who had some funny scenes and was really adorable.

Stallone really didn't need to be in this. He didn't nothing of note and stood out really badly in all of his scenes. I felt Yundo could have used a flashback scene to make us care for him and Starlord's history together because I never really bought that the two would have ever held each other in anything but contempt.

Overall it was a solid movie. Not sure if it was better or worse than what I was expecting since I came in with little expectations other than "it'll probably be pretty good", which it was. Hoping Spider-Man Homecoming will be great, though.

Are there gifs out there of Quill's reaction to discovering Ego killed his mom (specificly the shot of him saying "WHAT?') and Kraglin's reaction to all the other Ravager's showing up at Yondu's funeral. I feel like thay could make great E3 gifs

Watched it last night, i really liked it. I even liked it more than the first one.

Also im just gonna say it: Nebula is kinda cute.

Just saw it in the theatre. First 40 mins or so was pretty good. I was ambivalent about the rest and I'd actually say I was pretty bored. The characters are constantly shown as being indestructible and saved in the nick of time over and over again. Also the jokes simply existed to diffuse any drama they had built up. It just got into a lazy self referential pattern that made me lose my interest. I was waiting for it to end so I could go home.

Just got back, it was just ok. A lot of the humor fell flat imo

Also my gf wanted to see it because it was supposed to be a happy upbeat movie since we've been seeing a lot of harrowing shit recently like It Comes At Night

Rewatched this tonight. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's flaws are a lot more apparent on rewatch. The overuse of monologues to convey huge chunks of emotional arcs, along with some clear failures in humor prevent this from truly matching the original film in quality. It's still the most interesting MCU film yet though, and a surprisingly ambitious blockbuster. It remains very enjoyable and a great kick-off to the summer.

I really wanted to like this movie but I felt that it tried way too hard with the jokes and they were misplaced at times. It took the tension out of the movie. Additionally, I felt the movie dragged on a bit. I literally fell asleep at parts.

The positives were the visuals. This movie would look amazing in 4k. Also, I loved Mantis and Nebula. Too bad Nebula wasn't used more. Kurt Russell was amazing as well.

I'm trying to remember...

StarLord did almost nothing in this movie. He was active in the first 15 minutes then he spends the next hour ten or so listening to music and relaxing on not utopia and listening to Kurt Russell circle the point over and over again.

Meanwhile Rocket and blue dude go do stuff but are incarcerated themselves for far too long. Then guy gets the head piece from baby groot and is able to easily murder a few hundred dudes by himself as though he is totally amazingly invulnerable.

Cyborg blue girl and what's her face hate each other and legit try to kill each other then suddenly work their shit out because of reasons in the most comically awful over the top sequence that would have killed both of them.

Then the last act occurs inside the planet and lots of effects happen and the gold people magically know all the real action is happening inside the planet even though the coordinates they were given was for the other ship that was orbiting the planet.

This movie was broken on the page. James Gunn did all he could do to make it look good and he really executed it as best as it could be but the script and subsequent production was obviously rushed.

Saw it yesterday, liked it a lot. Loved the Ben Browder cameo. It's perfect because Guardians was a big inspiration for the look and feel of Farscape. By contrast, though, I don't know a thing about comic books unless it's in the movies themselves, so I had no idea what was up with Stallone's team at the end and I had to look it up online afterward. It was cute, but I wish it came with a single line of dialogue explaining itself, lol.

I wonder if I'm the only damn GAFfer who fanboyed at Browder but didn't get the Guardians 3000 nod. I hate saying "am I the only one" but this time it almost feels worth asking.

Anyway, back to the film itself. Some of the humor in these movies is the very definition of what I don't care for in comedy. I'm looking at the "turd" banter above all, here. Just utter dreck. Speaking of Farscape, that stuff hurts rewatches for me. But there's a lot of humor in the GOTG films that does work for me, so it's an interesting assortment. I never know in advance when something will land and when it'll make me cringe. I think a little less landed this time around but I'll have to go back to 1 to verify it. ("You should see this place with a blacklight" and "they got my dick pic" or whatever are textbook examples of cringe in the original. I am not a fan of crude humor like that at all.)

The chemistry between the cast helps make up for the fact that the tonal irreverence of these movies sometimes misfires for me. I love non-blood family dynamics. They speak to me, truly speak to me, because I don't have long-lasting blood family connections. I didn't grow up with that. I grew up with mixed-up kids like myself, and we became a family together. So yeah, it's my favorite trope. GOTG delivered on it and so did the sequel.

I saw this last weekend and thought it was pretty good. There was a lot of going from one dramatic monologue to another. Still, it was humorous and fun. I thought making Kurt Russell look younger was the best special effect in the film.

Finally got around to seeing it yesterday.Enjoyable and actually made me feel some feels over Yondu. I think some of the jokes didn't exactly hit as well as in the first one but it's been a while since I've seen it.

Saw it this week...loved it (maybe more than the first). I see some people in here saying that the jokes didn't hit as hard as the first but my theatre was laughing at everything. Definitely a great time.

Kind of a strange movie to see on Father's Day in retrospect but all of us had a great time. I don't know how I would compare it to the first but I can definitely say that the Guardians are my favorites of the MCU. Loved all the new Yondu and Nebula material, both actors did great with their parts, I was almost worried they'd go down a more cliche path with Nebula. Mantis was a great addition and Ego was a fantastic villain.

Surprised the theater was still so full tbh.

I finally watched this today (took nearly two months but hey). I really liked it! I loved the first one on my first viewing but started finding more I disliked about it than I liked after a couple of rewatches, so I was apprehensive about this film. Thankfully, there was a more for me to like here, such as the character dynamics feeling much more natural, proper character arcs (for the most part), a good villain, breathtaking visuals, better action sequences and easter eggs I really dig.

Some problems I had were the dramatic moments getting undercut by a joke every time, the licensed song usage didn't feel as strong as the first, Gamora felt underwritten (though still better than the first film) and the score was a bit... eh. Glad they stick with the motif, though. Also, the sheer number of jokes meant that a good number of them were duds, which could've been avoided.

If I were to make a list of the top 5 MCU movies, I'd put this in there.

Okay, finally saw it.

So this movie's kinda mixed for me. I feel it does a few things way better than the first one. The biggest one was probably fleshing out the characters. This movie made the relationships between the main characters more believable. Especially with Yondu, who I was incredibly surprised to see stole the show. When I initially saw him making a return in the trailers, I thought they just brought him back for him to do a bunch of random cool shit with his magic arrow or whatever. Granted, he did do a lot of that, but there was so much more to him.

I also liked how the story cleared up a lot of questions that I had in the first movie, namely, why the fuck did Yondu kidnap Quill. A lot of the backstory between Quill and Yondu was also elaborated, and when you found out the real reason Yondu didn't take him back to Ego, you no longer felt that bad for Quill being kidnapped.

Ego (not "EGON", goddamn it) was a great villain, much better than Ronan imo. One of the reasons was that, he was a legit cosmic level threat. Ronan was a scrub by comparison, and it was one of biggest things that aggravated me about the first movie. You're the Guardians of the Galaxy, so you have to fight people that can be a threat to a whole galaxy. It's not that hard!

One consistently good thing that I will say about both movies is that they have incredible art design. Nearly everything looks so damn beautiful, particularly Ego's planet (which, I guess would be Ego himself?). Everything is just so bright, colorful, and otherwordly. The shots in space have this wonderful ethereal feel to them. It's just so gorgeous.

Finally, the antenna chick was the funniest character in the movie, imo.

Okay, now the bad stuff...

The goddamned jokes. Not so much the jokes themselves, but there's two major issues with how they're used in the movie. The first is that Gunn and his writers just do not know when to fucking quit. They may have a idea for a joke or a gag, which seems perfectly good on paper, but then they just beat it to death. The most glaring example of this is the Taserface scene. This was legit funny...for 3 minutes, but somehow gets extended to 15 (okay, maybe it was closer to 10, but it FELT like 15). Yes, we get it, it's a stupid name, stop trying to repeatedly explain to the audience why it's stupid. That just makes you stupid. Stupid.

The second problem with the jokes is that they're done at completely inappropriate times. A good example of that is when Ego transforms into David Hasselhoff to provide Quill a familiar face that he could relate to. Which would have been fine...if it wasn't done 30 seconds after you just told him that you murdered his goddamned mother! Then there's that scene where Quill and Ego are fighting and they turn into Skeletor and Pacman, respectively. Again, would have been a fine gag if it wasn't for the fact that it's done an incredibly climactic moment and that you wouldn't think Quill would be feeling in a very comedic or creative mood by that point.

Then there's the Gold douchebags. When the movie started, if you were like me, you might have gotten the impression that these guys were just some one off joke characters that had no purpose other than to provide an excuse to have a major space battle scene in the beginning. But no, turns out, these assholes keep on fucking showing up all throughout the film. Now, even that might have not been a big deal... if it wasn't for the post credits scene. Now these dickheads, which started off as comedic fodder, are now actually have a significant role in the events for the next movie? Come the fuck on!

Then we have the music. I might get criticized for this, but I don't care. I don't really have anything substantive to say, but I just didn't like most of the songs. Not a fan of 70s funk, so take that how you will.

And how can I forget Baby Groot? Probably my most hated character in the film. Yeah, I said it. And you know what else? I also think Hitler was right!

Finally, last two points. 1) Ego is not a celestial, he's a goddamned planet. There's a huge difference! 2) Why the hell was Stallone in this film? He added absolutely nothing to it.

So overall, I think I marginally like Guardians 2 more than the first one, but truth be told, I'm not a fan of either movie and think they're (especially the first one) immensely overrated, so that that how you will.

^^Hype! I haven't seen this yet so getting to see it in 4K on my OLED for the first time outta be a treat.

Rumor is both TFA and Rogue One will also be out later this year on UHD.

I saw this last night on a whim after renting the first one this weekend. I really didn't care for the first one, but I had just ridden the Disney ride so I wanted to learn more about the characters.

That being said, I loved this movie! Blows the first out of the water. Groot is adorable.
