FFXIV: Stormblood having a rough first day for players, forming lines to do quests

This is hilarious. People are ACTUALLY forming physical lines for that quest XD

Or in video form, is smoother.

So I reached the first dungeon, and my leveling buddy is stuck in the RNG clickspamfest that is the stupid first solo story instance.

So I made a short video of why the entire LINE thing is doomed to fail. Here is a random Levi line.

I've never been more excited to stand in line.

Not everyone is so civil

Someone baited a monster over to the npc to get people to scram and I got in lol

Lol that's so crazy.

I was doing FATEs earlier in the Heavensward zones and there were literally thousands of people at once killing mobs.

really glad I took a break from the game. Conveniently, I'm always in the mood to resub when I'm months behind in content and it's very easy to catch up.

Good luck to the current players. Or make an alt character on a JP server, those are always stable, since less players.

Crazy thing is that Heavensward didn't have these kinds of problems at early access. That said, they did do some things for their server infrastructure prior to launch (to expand our inventory, etc) that could have affected something that they didn't foresee - but then again, I'm just backseat dev-ing here.

Either way, it really sucks :p

This indicates that things going smoothly in HW was simply a fluke and this dev team still has issues learning from peer MMO's.

How the hell they didn't see this coming. Pretty bad job by SE and whoever designed this.

Very dumb, it's like quest design 101 for anyone with a clue back in the mid 2000's.
It's pretty sad when anyone but the people who designed it know better.

I could log in the second it went live but I am stuck at that quest right now. the queue is hilarious. I just love how people come up with this stuff so fast.

Well, it will take some time for me to get there. Until there, I'll probably won't have a problem (I'm still at level 18 haha)

Good times. I think this was for a NPC follower quest when they were introduced. Man I miss this game.

Take the monthly fee, calculate how much it costs per minute and then charge that back to Square for the length of time you wait in a queue? lol

I remember this happening in The Division with an early quest giver that could only speak to so many people at once. The larger point being this should never need to happen in a MP game. Good quest design/quest givers should have ways around high levels of activity. This doesn't seem to be waiting in a queue finder for a dungeon but having to wait to do/turn in a quest.

I think I'll resub in a few weeks! I still need to hit 60 anyway.

What causes this? Does the NPC just crash if too many people are trying to interact with it?

I remember when the same thing happened in The Division:

Lines to do quests are surprisingly common during MMO launches. Off the top of my head, in recent years I remember it in Tera and Black Desert. Both of those had lines because you had to wait around for like 3 mobs to spawn to kill them for a quest, and there were a hundred people who needed to kill those 3 mobs.

I am surprised that they are having the problem with the instance servers on the second expac though. They should have known a lot of people would want to do story instances during a launch period.

There is a streamer doing it now. He can't get past it, entering a cutscene over and over from the NPC at the end. I think he cut the line too. Twitch, the top FFXIV stream.

literally every MMO on earth has this problem on launch

likewise, literally every time, people say this exact same thing

To give credit where it's due. Guild Wars 2 actually didn't have any issues like this at launch.

Though as far as I remember, neither did the Heavensward launch.

I can't see this being any better when it properly launches. Way to kill my hype for it. Even worse that you get to do 0 dungeons and 0 trials before reaching this roadblock. Hopefully I get lucky later tonight.

Didn't this happen when XIV first came out? Lol

This happens every time and is pretty normal for this game at this point. It's been out for a few years, makes a boat load of money and they never fix or change anything and I wouldn't expect they every will. This game has always had server issue and recently they just moved their data centers and it still runs less than optimal for many people. I've been playing since 1.0 and they've always had problem with this stuff.

I tried to renew my sub this morning and their online account system kept timing out which resulted in myself getting locked out of my account and after talking to their customer support twice I'll most likely be locked out past launch of the game cause their account system is garbage. Both of the customer service members I talked to are just like "I dunno let me escalate"

I think I'm just gonna ask for a refund, I was already on the fence about coming back and maybe this is a sign to pack it in, good thing I pre-ordered for early access..

Guild Wars 2 has some witchcraft server tech for their game. They can do a update that don't require downtime. Maintenance, etc. I bet their total time down was probably less than 2 days if anything. Though I think they may have had one instance of having to be down for some reason.

When 2.0 came out there were lines for the first single player instance. I think it was already fixed before the official launch. I expect he same here. It's just strange because Heavensward was a smooth launch.

Heavensward's MSQ split into two paths pretty early so I guess that helped.

What are you even talking about, no they don't. And this isn't FF14's launch, it's its second expansion after its own re-launch.

There was also no down time for the expansion. It literally just said: "Update is available, reset your game" and boom, the expansion was up without a hitch.

There were also numerous micro patches put out literally hours after launch for every little issue that pooped up.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I quote:

In WoW there would've been 300 mammoths on that NPC.

Funny thing is that this does too afaik.

It's just you have a choice between one that gives just exp and no loot...

Or the one that gives loot and exp.

Guess which one everyone picked.
