Rewatched Batman v Superman Extended Edition; this version of the movie's pretty good

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I revisited B v. S a few days ago on blu ray for the 3rd time (2nd time watching the Extended Cut) and I like the movie better with each rewatch. I was in the mood to see it again after being blown away by movie of the year contender WONDER WOMAN. The theatrical version of B v. S was a mess, but I feel the Extended version brings the movie up to "pretty good" status, perhaps slightly above Man of Steel which I also enjoyed (Academy Award winning Suicide Squad though is something I have no desire to see again).

Good points:
- The visuals are fantastic. As per with Snyder.
- The best on screen version of Batman. Affleck nailed it.
- Loved the intro taking place at the end of MoS from Bruce Wayne's POV.
- The fights were fantastic.
- I enjoyed the senator character, and the look of dread on her face when she sees the jar of Granny's Peach Tea in the courthouse is one of the best scenes in the film. Great tension.
- Wonder Woman was the highlight of the film. Everyone in the theater was so HYPED when she showed up and her theme kicked in.
- The whole Lois Lane investigation storyline makes sense in the Extended Cut and the senate hearing is expanded upon. Amy Adams is always enjoyable.
- Superman looks good.

Bad points:
- Lex Luther. Whew, casting Michael Cera's lookalike as the big villain was a mistake, and making him this jittery mess just didn't work imo. Is he supposed to be a misunderstood genius? LMAO
- Doomsday could have looked a bit more threatening. Looked like a cartoon. My friend refers to him as that "Shrek looking blob".

- That dream or future prophecy part or whatever still makes no sense. I had to look it up online to find out what the "Knightmare" sequence even meant.
- The laptop scene where you see clips of Aquaman/Cyborg etc. really killed the pacing in the final act. Really weird, unnatural way to shoehorn your extended universe into a film. Plus the clips had ready made logos for the characters...a mess.

I don't know where to place the whole "Martha" thing. I didn't have a problem with it, there really wasn't a good way to end the fight which should have been a lot more one-sided, but I don't do comics so I have no idea if Clark and Bruce Wayne actually do have moms with the same first name.

I'd give the theatrical a 5/10 and the Extended Cut an 8/10. It could be an 8.5 if they had cut out the Knightmare and laptop scenes. Wonder Woman gets a 10 (Man of Steel would get a 7.5 and Suicide Squad gets a 5 from me).

The last thing Batman v Superman honestly needed was an extended cut. It honestly needed the complete opposite and needed a reduced cut.

-- Cut the Justice League teases
-- Cut the nightmares
-- Cut Luthor
-- Cut Doomsday
-- Cut Wonder Woman

The JL and nightmare sequences were honestly unnecessary to the plot. Doomsday is a stupid video game final boss stapled on to the end of the movie. Wonder Woman is the best part of the movie, but she's simultaneously the most unnecessary part of the movie because she only ties into the Justice League and Doomsday crap. Make the movie purely about Superman and Batman having a major idealistic clash regarding crime fighting and end the movie with them resolving their differences and realizing their two sides of the same coin. You don't even need the Lex Luthor pulling strings in the background shit either, the movie did a fine job of establishing how Batman and Superman clash.

yes the World's Greatest Detective spend a year obsessed w Superman and does NO detective work, never looks into Superman's human parentage, never looks into the international incident at the center of the movie, just spends all day getting mad at the news.

It's fucking fantastic.

I wish more superhero movies aimed for the stars like this. It might have not quite gotten there, but it got far enough.

And yes, best Batman.

I honestly thought the Luthor casting was on point. He did a good job with the 'unhinged genius' motif, and his bizarre obsession with superman/god.

Even go so far as to say he was one of the best parts of the movie.

Most of what you mentioned wasn't changed in the Extended cut. And there's still a ton of plot holes and just bad structuring all around.

This! It could be a much better movie with more cuts instead of putting more scenes.

I think its an alright film, both wonder woman and man of steel are better though. I also plan on buying watchmen on bluray soon, that uncut version rocks as well.

the extended edition is certainly a huge improvement over the theatrical, I'll agree to that part at least.

I can get with this. Most folks I talk to say the extended edition made the film better for them but it really didn't do anything to address the biggest issues in the film for me. Your blueprint still doesn't go far enough imo but it's a good start. Pretty much nothing that happens in the last half of the film belongs in a movie called Batman Vs Superman.

Also, Batman killing fools makes complete sense with this interpretation of the character.

Affleck really nailed old, griseled and disillusioned Batman.

Though the next movie needs to make him get back to his honorable way.

I wouldn't say it's "pretty good" at all. That said, it isn't complete and utter trash like the hyperbolic sheeple claim. ~6.5/10 imo, about right for a Snyder film.

The Doomsday fight is one of my favorites ever. Watching the trinity fighting together for the first time was awesome and the action and coreography were beyond excellent, as it's usual with Snyder.

He should really stop directing whole movies and just make the action stuff. He's one of the best at that, but he's mediocre at directing.

Batman v Superman​ felt like an incredibly dumb person trying to explain astrophysics to me. That's just how I felt.

It's not a totally incompetent film. But it's poorly paced, overly long, and just a mediocre drama. That's the problem with aiming for realism in these type of movies. As an adult drama, it's bad. As a superhero movie, it's unremarkable and not that entertaining. It isn't funny. And honestly I'm not even sure what the message of the film is supposed to be. So *shrug*

I thought the extended cut was significantly better movie. Ever single scene of Superman that was restored made the movie and his character far more coherent.

There's some good ideas in this movie, and they're easier to see in the extended cut, but there's still too much shit holding it down. My opinion over time has been getting worse on the movie too.

The worst part about Luthor is that he's neither threatening or interesting. You pretty much need one of those two in order to make a decent villain.

As someone deeply familiar with DC, the Knightmare sequence was fucking awesome. Parademons, Omega, time traveling Flash. Awesome.


BvS was a good movie, not great like MoS and WW, but good. The only stinker so far in the DCEU has been SS.

You really put it lightly.

BVS Luthor is one of the most annoying characters ever created.

If they wanted to create a villain that the audience hates they succeeded. For the wrong reasons.

I still don't get why they didn't get Snyder to direct the next Batman. Snyder's edgy is the PERFECT fit for Frank Miller's edgy (and I mean that in a good way), and he has a comic book framing aesthetic that would set it apart from the other Batman movies. Superman, on the other hand...

I wish they'd distance themselves from Frank Miller edgy, honestly. Everything Frank Miller has done since Dark Knight Returns has been pretty awful. It would be source material from a guy who doesn't understand the character that much being adapted by a guy who also doesn't understand the character that much. It would be a compounded issue.

Matt Reeves is literally a best-case scenario for that movie. Not sure why people would prefer Snyder.

Yeah. I was waiting for this movie, but the jar, emo Supes, Martha and its effects on the movie, Lois and the scepter, Jimmy, Doomsday, "an uninhabited island", JL forced cameos, the completely unrelated "Dream" sequence, pretty much every characterization except maybe Batman..

There are some good scenes in this in between, but come on, every major storypoint is laughably bad.

The fact that they murder Jimmy Olson in the first five minutes of the movie shows how much contempt the people behind this movie have for the source material.
