Nintendo planning to release large amounts of ARMS backstory/lore

They're very eager to assure you this is happening.

Glixel: Is there a backstory to the game? Are you going to explore the lore in more detail somewhere other than the game like Overwatch does?

Kosuke Yabuki: We're doing a bit of that right now. So far it's only happening on Japanese social media, but it's starting to provide some background on where the arm abilities come from, and we've started to talk about why people have stretchy arms in the game. That's the kind of thing we're creating to bring a greater sense of reality to the game. We're hoping to do a lot more of that as time goes on. That said – if you really want to know why they have stretchy arms? The real answer is: because Nintendo.

Masaaki Ishikawa: The most important thing for us is that it's more fun if the arms extend. So that's what we did. We are preparing a proper background story though. Don't worry.

Glixel: When you're designing the characters, are you thinking of a story? Does that live somewhere and we just haven't been exposed to it? Or does the gameplay come first and you worry about that stuff later?

Kosuke Yabuki: He thinks about it a lot.

Masaaki Ishikawa: It's a matter of priorities. Fun is more important than anything. The setting and the story has be fun too, but has to be subordinate. I'm thinking about backgrounds and stories, but if it gets in the way of the game – it has to take a back seat. We have a lot of fans that really get into the lore of the game. That's a powerful thing.

Glixel: The art style is very distinctive, and is in a similar vein to Splatoon in a way. What's the inspiration for the design, and is there a connection between the way the current Nintendo games look?

Masaaki Ishikawa: Dragon Ball was definitely an influence on what we're doing. I've loved that since I was a kid. The other big influence is Akira.

I'm convinced the success of said lore will be measurable by how many ARMS-related domains will redirect to Waypoint.zone by this time next year.

A Nintendo dev saying something was made "because Nintendo" is way too amusing for me.

I like that amount of self-awareness, maybe that's why Splatoon's lore was so special

Brilliant idea. It's worked wonders for fostering a strong and dedicated community in Overwatch and I think it could work well for ARMS.

So it sounds like it will be an Overwatch type situation, where we'll get story through social media and shit.

Also, gotta love Dragon Ball. No wonder I dig this game so much.

Kinda hard to be annoyed at Nintendo considering they have their priory right, can't wait to see it added into the game as at the moment single player is just barren.

They should really consider making some "Meet the X" type videos like Overwatch and Team fortress.
These characters are pretty great and it would add quite a bit to the universe.

I think we could see a more fleshed out Story-mode or
Arcade mode in a future update. The characters are fantastic, and the final cutscenes is a sweet taste of what's possible.

I would rather they integrate more of it into a proper story mode. Have some Tekken Force sections in between fights were you play the game like a beat em-up beating up some generic enemies.

Every character in the game could have their own advanture game. The character design is pretty top notch stuff. It would be a waste not to add story and lore to them, that said, the developers obviously didnt think too much about the story and focused on the game first, which is Nintendos strengh to begin with.

The next game needs a single player campaign! Imagine 1v100 but expanded into a full on beat 'em up with multiple enemy types and bosses. So much potential.

I'll applaud this effort when they put it in the actual game, preferably tied to a story mode or a gallery of sorts.

That cool lore video being used only in the Direct is a damn shame if you ask me, and the same applies to everything they keep exclusively to social media. SFV has been doing similar things with its elaborate fighter profiles being stuck on the Japanese website instead of being featured in a gallery mode in the game, and it's not great there either. Overwatch is also a game I would have picked up if there had been a story mode that incorporates those cool character shorts found only online currently. Nintendo should in other words not use those two games as examples imo.

The lack of single player content for this new ip is disrespectful. I expect this kind-of gimping from Microsoft or third parties, not Nintendo.

It's really not that surprising, when I look at the latest Smash, as well as MK8D.

Was there something missing on Smash? I felt that game had huge amounts of content. Mario Kart 8 had the same amount as previous games.

But they didn't have a in-depth single player.

The most surprising thing is how Mario Kart 8 hasn't been slammed for it Lol.

Smash Bros. 4 lacked an equivalent to Brawl's Subspace Emissary adventure mode.

Personally, I think it was for the better.

I can definitely see the Dragon Ball inspirations. Game is fun as hell. Hopefully they keep it balanced and listen to community feedback.

I also hope they include/patch this IN TO THE GAME.

sry but i can be asked to go lore hunt outside of the game, this was already infuriating to me in ffx
