Motorsport Manager (PC/Mac/Linux) |OT| "Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing!"

Thanks for your response.

So can I for example get a box set for Linux, use the code on it to play the game on my temporary Macbook Pro and when I finally buy a new laptop (whatever OS I use), just log in, download the game again(it'll be linked to my steam account right) and play it.

Sorry about the noob questions, I am a DS/3DS gamer and don't really play on my PC because its really old.
There is no Linux specific box, but you got the rest right. If you buy the physical release you will get a DVD and a code. Simply activate the code on your steam account and install the game on whichever computer you want, as often as you want. The game supports Linux, macOS and Windows out of the gate.

You sure about this? Then why are they asking me for the platform? Are you saying that all the platform releases are bundled in 1 DVD?
Good point. I haven't bought a physical pc game in years, so maybe they actually put boxes with different DVDs out. Anyway, once the game is activated you simply have "Motorpsort Manager". In Steam there are no OS specific versions, the license is for the game on all the plattforms. And since you don't have a disc drive it doesn't matter what they put on the disc. Sometimes they even just put the steam installer on there and nothing else.
I could also imagine some stores selling a "mac" version for more money, because people simply don't know that it doesn't matter. But that's just speculation.
Anyway, you buy the box for the code, not the DVD. And it the code is OS agnostic.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks a lot.

Is there a warning that you're going to get fired for having the finances being so far in the red? I'm at negative 4 million in the budget but my job security is still "very secure". I managed to cut my losses per race to about 100k by firing the reserve driver and setting the budget for next year's car to minimum.

With 7 races out of 14 remaining I should be able to keep above negative 5 million at year's end by signing new sponsor deals. Still 3rd in team championship, so I should be expecting a nice payout at season's end. But I've stopped developing new parts and now only focused on improving them, I hope the other teams don't massively improve in the remainder of the season.

Haha holy cow, that's desperate times. Hopefully it works out and you get that nice payout, but your next car is gonna blow so you have to consider that as well.

Literally if it went to sub £5m you got the boot I think. It might have given you an ultimatum that you had to get x in the next race, but I think that was just if you're security was generally poor and not actually anything to do with money.

A dilemma just popped up with a choice of being forced to vote in favour of free tyre compound choices or saying my vote is not for sale. I picked up 250k and that rule wouldn't really affect my race strategies anyway. So now I'm only 3.85 million in the red now!

I had a disaster. Both drivers crashed out of a race, dropped us from ~8 points off first in constructor's to 5th place, and my chairman gave me an ultimatum to finish 6th or I'd be fired.

Developed another expensive ass part to give myself the best chance and managed 4th (and 11th). Live to race another day.

I have to admit though, I still am unclear if I actually get fired if it's my own team, given that they said I would be fired for not coming in 1st last season and nothing happened.

Wut...

The team that wanted me to vote for the rule change ended up voting against it anyways and the rule change failed. Oh well, free money.

I'm pretty sure you can still get fired from your own team, I read it somewhere. It's okay though, you could always make a triumphal return after a few seasons when the new manager ruins your team.

The joy for me was getting sacked from one team for only coming second, then taking over at another team who were much better equipped and winning the 3rd tier 2 seasons in a row.

Follow up race was 2nd and 3rd, I think the chairman just knew I had a chance to do better if he lit a fire under my ass to develop another part. haha

Welp, I had a 1 point lead in driver's and was down by 5 points in constructor's going into the final race.

Didn't have a good enough race, my two drivers slotted in between their two drivers. My two drivers finished 2nd and 3rd, theirs 1st and 4th overall.

Another freaking season in this crap league :(

I did butter up their #1 driver (who won it all) and I'm thinking of taking the plunge to sign her and spend a ton of money, because I can't take another season of my #2 crashing out every couple races. Actually, if she didn't crash in just one of the races I would have won. :(

edit: Welp, that driver didn't like my deal at all. I've got the same exact team going into this season. On the plus, my marketability is at 88.7% overall, I've got a ton of HQ upgrades coming in, plenty of money to get through this season, and already a new part developing. Should be able to do well, testing was the highest it has ever been as well (3rd and 6th).

I get really into the livery maker and have a real hard time deciding, gonna post a few of the recent seasons'. Want to see what others come up with for ideas.

Those are some slick liveries, I try to make some with unique colour combinations but they all end up looking garish.

I just had a pretty wild finish to the end of the season. I had stopped developing new parts around the time I slashed budget spending. As I figured, everyone else improved their cars while I didn't. I was barely able to score 1 point for 6th place finishes every other race from the midpoint of the season. But I was lucky to have 2 races during that time with changing weather conditions and was able to score victories in both by taking advantage of various wet weather tires.

By the last race of the season, I was 3rd in the team's championship behind former WMC team Velan Racing and top tier APS team Esprit GP. The weather forecast was dry all weekend and my drivers qualified 13th and 16th. But when the cars took the grid a bit of light rain was occurring with heavier rain to follow. Every was starting on full wets, so I knew what I had to do.

Five stop strategy too OP!

E. Lara was the driver starting 16th and by the end of lap 1, she was already in 1st and ahead of the field by 4 seconds. Thanks to the season finale being double points, the 1-3 finish meant that I was bumped to second. I missed out on the team championship by one point.

As an aside, I find it funny how well my drivers did considering Iceland and Sri Lanka aren't exactly traditional motorsport countries.

I ended the season barely avoiding bankruptcy as you can see in the financials. Even though I missed out on the team championship, I was okay with Velan not being on the grid for next year. They were ranked 1st in every team statistic and the team that got relegated was an original Asia-Pacific Supercup team. The promoted team from the European Racing Series was also originally an Asia-Pacific Supercup team.

Next I collect my winnings, see what sort spending I can use on the new car design and hopefully I can better manage per-race finances.

Damn! That's a hell of an end to the season, congrats.

If that's the driver I think it is, I almost hired her for the last 3 seasons to save money (pay driver right?). Thing is, I went as marketable as possible and it's paying off with how much money I'm getting.

Only problem now is my designer is pretty middling at designing gearboxes and it's one of the two parts we can make, so I keep dumping money on these expensive parts and they become obsolete in 3 races (this is while improving to max).

Oh and if I ever get back to my F1 career with Windsor, I'll be with my attempt at making a Marlboro McLaren (should have used a reference photo I went on memory/what was closest)

Yeah, Lara is a ride buyer. During the preseason she became a music sensation and as a result got a pretty bad debuff. The trait resulted in -2 for every driving stat and lowering her star rating. This applies for 20 weeks and I wasn't going to have that. I fired her and took the almost 3 million dollar hit for breaking the contract. Instead, I hired a 4+ star free agent for around 450k per race. This meant that I'll be losing that amount more per race. My marketability is just shy of the amount needed for 4 star sponsors, but if one of my drivers get any marketability trait it will push it over.

After getting rid of Lara and receiving money to design the car, I had 32 million to work with. I built a car emphasizing improvability again but this time had money to improve the tire wear. Testing went alright with the cars being somewhere in the midfield. I set a goal of 4th place and now I start the season with about 20 million.

I'm trying to contol spending this year so I'm not going to build any major buildings at HQ this season. I estimate a loss of about 800k a race with sponsor bonuses but with spec gearboxes, I think I might be able to finish the season in the black for the first time. Although, everyone else's contracts end this year so I have to think about how much I should renew them for.

Damn, I've always been around 3-8 million in the black by the end of seasons. I think I'm always a bit too conservative with part development. I relied so heavily on my race strategies when I was in the F1 series, and that's how I won with Williams I mean Windsor my second season.

It carried over to the lower division as a result. Oh, one of my drivers got a permanent buff too. I had a choice between them being really good in practice/quali or on races. I used my reserve instead of them for practice sessions so now they have the +2 to everything on race day perk, so fucking good.

How do drivers hit their maximum potential/stat value? I'm guessing you need building upgrades and without them your driver's stat gain per week keeps dropping as he gets older until he peaks. Do HQ bonuses to stats also stop when they hit a particular age?

You could also hire a driver with the "mentor" trait which increases improvability of the other one.

I got lucky, all the other teams couldn't hire better drivers and as a result my team is ranked #1 in terms of drivers. One of the teams is even running a driver line up of three half-star drivers. That team is Chariot which funnily enough I think is the Manor Racing equivalent.

I got a funny message in the social media stream:
Whatever you say Anna.

I've got two races left, and I pulled the trigger on my most expensive part yet, just to be used for a single race. I'm in a position to get out of the bottom division and I'm going for it.

Yet again my drivers are neck and neck at the end of the season, always seems to happen. Qi crashes out way more frequently which is frustrating, I'd have this easily in hand if she hadn't.

Going to be basically at $0 by the end of the season, with basically nothing developed at HQ except for gearbox and brakes facility because of the rules in my division, so it's going to be real tough if/when I go up, but damn it I'm doing it.

Okay I guess.

It's actually great that she won, because the bonus for being the reigning champion to marketability means I got my 5 star sponsors for the first time :D

Went up to Asia-Pacific, and didn't end up replacing anyone. I tried to get a new mechanic but they were all divas about money and I figured I'd see how I did with the team in the new series...
Not in love with the look but it took forever to decide again. I wish there was more customization (I know I could technically mod it but don't have the time/patience).

First race...
WAT.

One driver flew out from the start and had a 10-12 second lead before their first pit stop, the other was around 3-5th but was able to move up from retirees.

Feeling really good overall about this season, I'm only losing 560k per race now instead of 1.7 mill in the previous series. If I meet sponsors I actually gain money which hasn't been the case since I was on my F1 save.

Nice, you are already in a better position than I was by starting the first Asia Pacific Series season with 5-star sponsors. Once you get your car to a competitive level, the sponsor bonuses become guarantees and you will be making big money.

I spent the next two Asia Pacific Series seasons improving my car until it became the best on the grid. I found a paydriver with 1.5 stars, so I made him the reserve driver. He came really cheap at 56k per race and as long as he runs practice sessions, he pays out 500k. His feedback stat is terrible, but I don't think that's an important stat anyways. Because of him and my star driver Sylvander meeting the bonus goals, I was able to build up my HQ to have level 1 parts buildings. I won the team championship in the 3rd year and because there were very high merit payments, I recieved 39 million.

I decided to make the jump into the top tier WMC. Even with my HQ construction, I had the 2nd worst HQ in the championship. Funnily enough, the not-Williams team had the worst HQ. I built a chassis with 4-star tire wear, 3-star tire heating, 3-star fuel efficiency and thanks to a 1 million dollar dilemma, 5-star improvability. I was also pleasantly surprised you could slightly manipulate what the car looks like. I ended up with a car with a wide rear wing, medium sized sharkfin and a low nose. I kept my race mechanics, and hired a new 4.5 star lead designer who was only 39 years old. It cost me a substantial increase in cost per race but she was a free agent and I didn't want any of the other teams to scoop her up. I also let go of my paydriver Jonsdottir and replaced her with another paydriver who was more skilled and had a marketability of 100. I had to pay more so again, I have an increased cost per race. Preseason testing went well enough, 9th and 13th. I set a goal of 8th place in the championship because I wanted the bigger budget and I believe my driver lineup would make that happen.

This was my analysis of the current state of the WMC:
Not-Hamilton and not-Vettel had retired by the time I got to top tier, leaving Zoe Sharp as the only remaining full 5-star driver.

Not-Mercedes has the best car and the reigning 4.5-star champion as their number 1. However, he has already peaked and at 35 years old he is losing some of his driving stats. Their second driver is a 30 year-old paydriver who has already peaked at 4-stars. The reserve only has 3.75 star potential. They will probably get carried to another team championship by their number 1.

The Scuderia and not-Red Bull have good cars but mediocre drivers. The Kitano factory team have the best HQ by a large margin and the best driver Zoe Sharp, but are held back by a middling car. Not-Williams have the worst HQ but an above average car and they signed not-Verstappen. Not-Toro Rosso and not-Mclaren have below average cars but decent drivers, not-Bottas being with not-Mclaren.

Thorton have mediocre drivers and a bad car. As for not-Sauber, the less said about them, the better.

I could easily beat Thorton and not-Sauber for 8th in the team championship, I just hope I can make money again since my cost per race balloned to 1.9 million. I have 29 million to play with so I should be able to make it last the season. Hopefully with access to 5-star sponsors, I'll get some extra money. I eventually want to hire not-Verstappen or Chiaki Hashimoto, they are both 4.5-stars and aged 24 with potential to reach 5-stars. But I know they'll cost 1.5+ million per race so I'll have to find a way to cut costs or increase profits.

Does anyone still play this? Unfortunately the guy who did the excellent F1/gp2/GP3 mod disappeared and stopped updating it. I tried playing the other realism mods but they just weren't the same, they didn't have the polish or attention to detail.

I had a go at restoring Enzoli's 2016 mod and I think I'm quite close tbh, so got back into it a lot quite recently. To give it some longevity I put in some 2017 liveries in there too and threw in some extra real world sponsors.

Basically, it's got me playing the game again

Just got this. So far I'm terrible at it lol. Started Archer and Finished the tutorial race in horrible fashion (18 and 20). I don't know the sport at all so I'm probably going to have a tough time strategizing for a win. I really like the game though so we'll see how it goes.

You'll probably place towards the back a lot at first until you upgrade your cars / drivers / staff.

Bought this in the summer sale, but except for one time after reinstalling it, I haven't been able to get the game to start at all. It's really bumming me out; I have no idea why. My next step is to send a crash dump to Sega UK and hope they get around to answering me before the refund window is up. Sigh.

If you want any tips let us know.

I stopped playing a long time ago, but I still love the game.

Reinstalled again, and backed up the game files so I don't have to keep redownloading 5+GB every time I want to play, if it should come to that. That said, I managed to start the game up twice, so we'll see if it still starts up tomorrow.

Starting to get into the whole thing of upgrading parts and doing practice sessions before races, and man. I almost wonder if I should've played the Android version first, because it's a lot of systems to take it all at once! Still digging it, though. Seems like a good initial strategy is to upgrade parts ASAP? Upgrading buildings takes a lot of dough and seems like more of a long-term play. Also not sure what to do with drivers yet, I've got a reserve driver that I can't figure out a place for as she's apparently not very good AND not got a lot of potential. Who knows.

Anyways, as long as the game remains stable, I'm sure I'll figure this all out eventually. It's fun getting lost in the minutiae of everything, even as someone who is at best a casual motorsport fan (and even then only of WRC).

First up improve the reliability of your gearbox, engine and then brakes. get them toward the 80% mark and then crank out the new parts. The amount of time taken to fix these parts in race will get you some decent places just by not having to do it in the early season.

Do reliability improvements carry over when you design new parts? I assumed that any new parts you created would need to be improved themselves, so it would make more sense for me to upgrade ASAP, but the game isn't super clear about this.

No they don't. You need reliability just to get through the races ideally without having to change one of those parts, costing you a lot of time (shouldn't be possible IMO but that's a different story lol).

So you improve the reliability of the 3 key parts that you start with, Engine, Gearbox and then brakes as these 3 take the most wear. Then you can set the team on designing new parts to get as high a performance number as possible. They'll get made and then you can start again, this time also adding the performance research to it as well.

Obviously any part that you can't buy a new one of, research its performance and reliability to just get it as high as you can.

Unless there is a change of rules or you move to a different formula, the best 2 parts of each type carry over to next years car as base stats. My technique (possibly now eliminated?) was to only research very illegal parts toward the end of the year, research the fuck out of them and then next year they become your standard now non illegal parts!

Just got this in the recent sale and started a career with my own team. First season was abysmal, second season wasn't much better, but my third season has started okay, my HQ is the best on the grid but my car and drivers are the worst still, not easy to replace them either as they have 90%+ marketability (great for sponsors!).

I'm using the ICE workshop mod, so the third tier is Formula E, 2nd is Indycar and first is F1. It's pretty cool.

My technique (possibly now eliminated?) was to only research very illegal parts toward the end of the year, research the fuck out of them and then next year they become your standard now non illegal parts!

That still works. :)
