Fate/Grand Order |OT| That's Hell You're Walking Into

For me its way better than summary translations on reddit. I couldn't find problems with story translations. Could you point examples?
I only saw questionable skill names and misc misspellings.

I don't have time (and perhaps inclination, as I'm not convinced this is being asked in good faith) to screenshot and post a ton of specific examples, but nobody has a distinct voice and often slips into sounding like Translation Robots, weird grammar is everywhere, and there are some outright mistakes.

The TL/loc work in this release is Not Good and players should ask for better.

Two 4★s in my first pull: Sthenos and Liz.

Are they serviceable?

edit (localization talk): The punctuation, carry-over terms like "senpai", and literal translations of some set phrases are what stood out the most to me. I'm still in the tutorial, but for a game that touts its story as one of its main selling points, I'm not sure that the quality shown in the tutorial will be enough to make it work.

The idea that it's "way better than summary translations on reddit" is really setting the bar lower than it should be. ^^;

Ugh, still re-rolling on my secondary. I have a Waver/Mario Antoinette account, but no other 4*/5* characters other than those. I know I can pick Heracles due to the Facebook event, but I kind of want to aim for something more. That being said, this is like my 12th re-roll and I've yet to get another 5* character, let alone the one I want...

I might just give up and go with my current account.

I got a 4* Saber from the tutorial and a 5* Saber from the real draw... any good?
Which Saber, Jeanne or Altria? If it's the former, she's really good. If it's the latter...not so much, but she's still a 5* and viable. Also, if she's your waifu, that's also important.

The game crashed for me during the tutorial roll, and when I booted it back up, I saw I had two 4* available. I thought the tutorial roll can only give one? Well, not complaining.

Just stop there. You wont be able to use them all in one party anyway.
Party cost at start is too low.

True enough, thanks.

I assume 4* characters aren't too difficult to obtain over time? As much as I'd like a double 5* account, I just know those odds aren't in my favor.

In either case, I'm going to take your advice, haha.

Liz is good, Stheno is not. But if you pulled a Liz, go for that second pull and see what you get because an account with a Liz and a good second pull is a keeper.

She actually refers to you as 'Senpai' and you can hear her say it. What would you have the translators do? Pretend the word doesn't exist and that you don't obviously hear it being said?

Well, I pulled Artoria. I'll pick up Emiya from the free campaign but there's no way I'm rerolling again. This is basically the best possible outcome for me personally.

Shame it happened on a pull where my free 4* was Carmilla, especially since she was the 4* I was stuck with on the JP version when I couldn't be bothered to reroll, but whatever.

So far I've got really shit luck.

First roll: 4* Heracles, but then a bunch of fodder 3*
Second roll: 2 4* Tamamos, rest are poor draws.
Third roll: 4* Martha, and then 6 4* non-Servants.

So far my luckiest was my first reroll, with a Liz and a Tamamo CAT.

All rerolls since have been crap. One of them trolled with a Kaleidoscope but no Servants above 3*.

I literally just had that happen on #21. All 3s + a Kaleidoscope and the only 4* on my tutorial pull was Chevalier Saber. This is really awful.

I got a Zhuge Liang on my main acct. Yet, I'm still rolling on secondary phone for Altera ( I don't care if she isnt the best! Love her in Extella)

I had 2x 5* Essence (non Caleidoscope) and Chev Saber from tutorial, rest were 3* units.

Despair, I tell ya. Despair! It always happens like that. Get something nice that would support great characters, don't get the great characters. :/

So I got a 5* but it's not a servant..

Is this any good? In my tutorial roll I got two 4* cat girls
Craft Essences have their uses, but they're equip items for your servants so without a powerful servant to make use of it, it's null. Even the best Craft Essence you can re-roll for (Kaleidoscope) isn't worth settling your account on, as seen above. I'd advise you re-roll for a 5* character instead, preferably Jeanne or Waver as they're the strongest ones currently (Waver remains top tier support, even in current meta in Japan).

Or just go with your favorite, that works too!

Well, I'm on my third/fourth tut reroll. I somehow summoned both EMIYA and Carmilla, along with a Cu. Could be a lot worse, really, since I got one of the two I wanted.

First 'proper' roll... Imaginary Numbers?! I keep getting that card, but never Kaleidoscope. Well, it's certainly useful... Unfortunately, I also got two Ceasars and two Saber Giles as well. And Lu Bu. It's tempting, but I really don't want to reroll yet again, so I'll probably just cut my losses and get Herc when the giveaway occurs.

Yeah I'm giving up on this for now, too tired of this nonsense. It's really shitty going 20+ Rerolls and seeing nothing but junk while other people get stuff. Doesn't help that I just got majorly fucked over in FFBE on top of it.

So do you just play the game to the first forced summoning session, and if you don't get anyone good, you reroll from there?

A bit after that. You play until you get full control and can open your mailbox, at which point you will have enough to do another summon.

Yes, because players can acknowledge that there is a disconnect between audio assets and localized text. The story (as localized) represents the only window the players have to the world and its inhabitants. Keeping a term "as-is" just because that's what is used in the audio is not sufficient reason unless the word is so integral to the identity of that character and the title to warrant its inclusion.

An example of this in action is FFXIV. They recently added a new Samurai class in the latest expansion and the majority of the skill names were simply romanized, rather than translated. Doing so allowed them to both introduce the class as one of exotic origin (in the context of the FFXIV setting) and maintain the original identity of the more widely-known samurai as an archtype. In this case, the overall gain you get from not translating the terms outweighs cons.

In this game, the concept of "senpai" isn't vital to the setting. There is no special significance (that I've seen so far) behind the inclusion of that relationship--nothing is gained in terms of character growth. The core relationship between the two characters doesn't change. The only positive point is that a Japanese person could see the shift from "sempai" to "master" and know what that entails. Instead, you've introduced a term that lacks relevance both culturally and from a story perspective when viewed from your target audience. The term should absolutely be localized as the goal of any localization is to produce a text that appears identical to one that was originally created in the target audience's country.

tl;dr: Absolutely. The localization team should have localized the term unless it has specific relevance / importance to the story. Otherwise, it contributes nothing and actually adds to player confusion by introducing an unknown word (that will never be resolved in the story).

How do you choose which 4* Servant you want? I seem to be missing that or I've misunderstood something.

Sthenos is pretty bad from what I'm hearing. I'd keep rerolling.

I'm going to buck opinion and say that Stheno is eventually good, but the problem is that she needs to be paired with specific people to shine. Her third skill, when she gets the quest for it, allows her to hugely increase the attack of Divine-trait Servants (any Servant with the "Divinity" or "Goddess Essence" trait, basically), and as these can already be heavy hitters, it makes her pretty valuable, on top of her ability to stall.

The problem is, she only gains value as more Divine Servants enter the roster; at launch, she's horrible because there aren't many Divines, and only a set number of them are any good.

She's not as bad overall as she's made out to be - really, she's basically another version of Liz. She just doesn't have enough candidates for really making use of her skillset until, at a minimum, the E Pluribus Unum chapter.

So do you just play the game to the first forced summoning session, and if you don't get anyone good, you reroll from there?

Play to first forced, play a bit past that, do your 10 roll with the free quartz, and if you don't like what you get from those, reroll.

I don't know how you could be a native English speaker and not find a ton of these lines to be, at best, awkward. I've played a few of those Asia region English versions of games and this one reads a lot like those. Worse in some spots.

THE GODDESS OF RE-ROLL SMILES UPON ME THIS DAY

This was my third roll. Absolutely loved the animation for Archer and Tamamo Cat was showing a 'grey' card and then it suddenly went gold. Tamamo Cat was my top pick Archer is just icing on this sweet cake.

On that note, another professional did take the time to list some of the big problems with the extant script in this twitter thread:

https://twitter.com/raikamudapon/status/879269651582025729

They had more patience that I did in putting that together!

I got 5* Saber (Altera) and 5* Saber (Altria Pendragon), plus Herkacles in my tutorial summon. Worth keeping?

That's a goddamn lot of Saber, but it's a pair of 5*s. If you value having wave clear, it's worth.

Besides, you can always burn one later for Rare Prisms. :V

Are 5* craft essenses worthless if you don't have good characters?
Maybe time to do another reroll. lol

The problem with CEs is that, unlike ~5* servants~, you'll pick up CEs at a pretty reasonable pace just by playing. It'll feel like a squeeze early on, but once you've rolled on a few event gachas you'll naturally pick up a decent base. If you're re-rolling, re-roll for Servants.

Granblue isn't even officially released outside Japan and it has a far better English translation. Though, to be fair, that's true now. This time last year some translated lines in GBF read like they came straight from google translate, so they've improved massively since then.

Still they put in the effort to improve something that was entirely niche for its audience, whereas this is an official English release and it's amateur hour.
