Someone on 4chan posted links to the Nintendo Switch SDK.

Meanwhile the SDK has been confirmed real by some realiable sources from the scene.
While it's useless without a proper exploit for the Switch, it may at least be useful in exploring how the software deployment on the Switch works, and may be the supporting pillar for the homebrew on the console.

Close if news already leaked.

Not sure if this is good news or not. :/

It's not good news for Nintendo I can tell you that.

Not certain if you think homebrew is a bad idea or not, and while there is still quite a ways to go, this begins the potential.

Homebrew groups typically don't code using stolen/leaked SDKs. They reverse engineer and develop their own libraries.

Developing any software using the knowledge of these SDKs would probably run foul of Nintendo's lawyers.

I don't understand why this wasn't open from the start. It doesn't gets us closer to homebrew or piracy (unless it exposes some huge flaw that shouldn't be there in the first time), and it enables smaller devs to learn or experiment with Switch development before paying however much Nintendo charges for a dev account or whatever.

Plus security by obscurity has never worked, they should've expected this. Opening the SDK and making it available to everyone would have been the sensible thing to do.

It is. First step to homebrew.

Let's not beat around the bush though. If (I don't know enough about either to say if it really is) it's an important step for homebrew, it's also an important step towards piracy.

But you already knew that was what the poster you quoted meant.

Can someone give examples of good homebrew other than emulators and piracy? Because all it ever seems to mean is hacks and piracy.

I love how GAF pretends that they don't use homebrew from piracy, and that y'all actually dump your roms from cartridges when you emulate games.

This is horrible news. I hope Nintendo nips it in the bud.

I really would love to have some homebrew on the Switch, but I would be too afraid if piracy would actually become real because of that. Some Vita-level homebrew, where you couldn't really use the entry point for piracy purpose would be ok imo.

If piracy becomes a thing on Switch very soon, I am pretty sure that Third Parties will totally leave the platform.

It means nothing. The only thing that will come from this is news articles saying it's been leaked.

If people want a more up to date SDK, you can just register as an indie dev with Nintendo directly.

Interesting. I wasn't fully aware of this.

Piracy wasn't on my mind at the time of the post, but obviously it will come in time, just like homebrew.

Running DOOM on every system is a good one.

Also I don't think a SDK leak opens the door to homebrew.

I'm curious about the software the Switch uses and how it works, it would be cool to know more stuff about the OS and APIs it uses.

Ehhh. I'm not sure this is very helpful to homebrew/piracy tbh. There are plenty of devices that are hard to run code on with public SDKs.

I really want a way to stream PC games to switch and homebrew might be the best shot at that.

But I really don't want to see piracy on the Switch.

Exactly.

These people just mask their real agenda and they get bent when called out on it.

I got good use out of the Wii homebrew by being able to backup my games digitally to a harddrive. All games are available digitally on the Switch though, so yeah...hacks and piracy. I really hope full blown piracy isn't in the Switch's near future.

I mean there are people who actually are excited about homebrew, and/or are actually dumping their own games.

You can't 100% label everyone as a dirty pirate and not expect some backlash from the sentiment.

At least on GAF, outside of someone outright admitting to piracy, you assume the best (and most legal) of intentions.

Why make it public when you could make money off of it?
I wish console devs would open their SDKs, we would get more software

Unfortunate for Nintendo corporate but this was bound to happen eventually. Piracy, homebrew and cracked systems are an inevitability.

Users clutching their pearls about it is silly.
