Switch SDK leak: 'Guest Login' and save data transfer are coming

Based on who's buying the Switch so far, they probably only needed to make this one.

I'm curious... what the hell are you talking about?

I just want to back up my saves to a cloud. I fear to lose 70 hours of Zelda play over some random shenanigans someday.

Once the servers go down, you'll be back to zero. So it's best if they offer a backup option that lets you choose between cloud backup and backup to SD card.

Another interesting tidbit: I'm starting to realize why Joy-cons cost as much, they really have a lot of technology packed in, including a full image processing chip for the IR Camera:
That is only part of the story. Such a chip is not necessarily very expensive. This is relatively trivial

This is super cool. Could this have kinetic like application if there is a way to link a joycon to a pc?
Camera placement makes it not very useful but people could still do cool things with it. Kind of like they did with Wii Remotes. It's basically a poor Man's Kinect in some ways.

I really want to know what the condos were that made this included. I doubt it'll ever be used for a game again, outside of a Wario ware type of game. Interesting tech but the placement on the controller makes it useless for any normal gameplay.
'The Wii was popular how can we do Wii-style gameplay without the sensor bar?'

Is that Danny Sexbang!?

Also the sdk might be useful if an exploit is found, but it would be severely limiting when it comes to things like like the original xbox stuff.

No ready means to distribute things.

But that (pointer controls) is being done with gyro, and has nothing to do with the camera. What the camera can do is stuff the Wiimote couldn't, but the only use of it I've seen so far is the eating mini-game in 1 2 Switch.

He's implying only the general white male audience it's onto Switch so far, the same people who buy Sony consoles, no kids and no women.

But Nintendo is and always be a family oriented company

The camera can do things that the Wii Remote couldn't do yes. But it also allows doing things that the Wii could do that you couldn't do without it. The sensor bar was used for calibrating sensor drift for motion plus for instance and for pointer controls without it that were better than gyro based pointer controls.

That's fantastic on the save transferring, I really hope that is cloud saving. The wonders that does for peace of mind...it's about time I can alleviate the worry of ever losing my BotW file <_<

All this new Ko Takeuchi art though

I know right? :3 As a huge fan of his work and a keen follower on Twitter, this is such a delight!

The problem with using a leaked SDK for Homebrew is that that actually pushes the Homebrew pretty firmly into the illegal territory, as opposed to the disliked by platform holders but legally okay space Homebrew usually occupies.

Does this explain why the Pro Controller is so expensive? Does it have the same camera setup?

I remember back in the day, you could save your Mii in your Wii Remote. It'd be pretty cool if you could save your Nintendo Account on your Joycon or Pro Controller. When you go to a friend's house with your own controller, you could sync and connect, then the player using said controller would automatically be logged in to their account. I used to play WiiSports with my own Mii at a friend's house because I always used my own Wii Remote.

I kind of wonder what the point of guest login will be, as opposed to just making a guest account if you want to have separate accounts. Maybe I'm missing something...

This is true, but the official SDK was all the original Xbox homebrew scene had, and that gave us greats like XBMC (now Kodi). They just distributed homebrew very carefully and on the sly.

Could we also get save transfer from WiiU to Switch? I'd like to not have to do all 150+ hours in breath of the wild again.

I care more about being able to back up my saves on my PC or in Nintendo's cloud rather than transferring them to another Switch or whatever. Aren't they confined to the game card right now?

They're confined to your Switch's internal memory.

Artwork is super cute. I can't be the only one who would love an Art of Nintendo exhibit somewhere or an artbook with all of these little illustrations they make in internal/press documents we don't normally see.

Save Data transfers sounds interesting and I'd guarantee they'd be done through MyNintendo or your Nintendo Network account. What would be extremely nice (and something I'm personally hoping for) is that when we do finally get VC, there's discounts offered if you already own it on the 3DS/Wii U or even in some cases the ability to redownload these VC games. It also sounds like a relatively useful ability in amiibos where you can download save data to a figure and then take it to a friend's house. This is already being done in Splatoon, was done in a way with Smash amiibo, and even the Skylanders Switch version has done this where it saves data to the figure.

Guest Login sounds like something for where you don't have to login/make an account on the Switch if you want to play a game, but don't want to use someone's current account. Perhaps if you're just trying something out at a friend's house or something? Alternatively, maybe if it goes further where you don't have to login to stuff like eshop and can just download a game. Amazon does this where if you forget your password they send you a pin # to enter (to an email) and then you don't have to go through the whole process of resetting and making a new password.

Yes, but the camera won't help with that. It's pointing the wrong way, and is blocked by your hand when holding the Joycon normally. What, are you gonna hold it backwards? Plus, there's no sensor bar.

The save transfers thing isn't terribly surprising. System transfer features didn't typically make it to launch and in the case of the Wii U it took something like 18 months for the feature to appear.

Edit: I think the 3DS took something like six months to be added. I know I was able to transfer to a Red 3DS from my Aqua Blue around the time Star Fox 64 3D came out, and I remember it being a fairly new thing at the time.

I really appreciate Nintendo made this effort so we can have that sandwich eating mini-game in 1-2-Switch.

Impressive as it is, sounds like a complete waste.

IDK, I could see this being useful for some form of creation app, where you can use real world objects to create in software objects.

If this is the same leak than what Eurogamer reported, it is at least 6 months old.

Newer documents don't mention save data transfer or certain other things. You can find the article at the Eurogamer site.

Just a reminder, and might not be anything serious but still...

Except you can't. I'd love to see something that shows otherwise, but even with the tech included the execution is just not going to work in any easy-to-play way.

I'd much rather them have used that cost towards a headphone jack.

One right by the cart slot.

Yes, that was exactly what i was implying. It'll help in the beginning but it's a worse thing long term as without a "need" to make a software environment, devs can get lazy and complacent like the original xbox Homebrew scene.

This leak is more of a poison pill for the homebrew community if it gets picked up. If its just for curiosities on the dev tools, that's one thing, but to actually use it is straight up stupid and someone is definitely going to do it (without realizing the ramifications on the entire scene) and potentially tank everything.

Then again, SDKs leak all the time and this one is old as dirt as far as the Switch is concerned.

The sensor bar isn't really needed. IR tracking can use any stationary object in the room. Sensor bar solved a slightly different problem and is an old solution.

The point about placement is valid though. Not sure what nulintenfo intends it for other than eating stuff.

Hey I don't work for Nintendo! I don't make these calls!

The joycons are really underrated tecnologically. This is some impressive stuff.
Definitely impressive how much tech they seem to have squeezed into it.

Too bad the features are mostly useless. HD rumble has yet to really impress me though some 1-2 switch games are at least interesting. I don't think the IR camera has been used yet, but as someone who plays almost exclusively in handheld mode I don't think they'll come up with something suited to that mode I'd actually want to use.

Most important news to me, the confirmation the IR camera range *is* actually greater than 30cm when used with so called reflective "markers".
Docs say IR tracking for objects only has a range of about 30cm.

It seems it might work at longer distances though when using IR markers.
