when was the last time we had a drop in entrants for a headlining street fighter game?

Normally most would attribute the SFV drop to the animosity that has built up over the last year, but pretty much everyone saw a drop (aside from Tekken). This could indicate that the drop may be a result of the more expensive price tag for EVO this year.

All the same, SFV is still above USFIV's EVO 2015 numbers (2227 for USFIV). Also, it's nice to see Tekken 7 do well.

Yeah, last year it was $20 plus $10 per game. This year I believe it started at $65 plus $10 per game. And finals tickets were an extra $60 both years as well.
Whaaaat

I didn't register this year since I can't go due to work but damn, that's quite an increase.

yo that price hike is no joke. no wonder numbers are down across the board

EDIT: Looking at those charts now my assumption was way off base lol.

The only surprise to me is Injustice, was expecting much bigger numbers for that game.

Go GG and UMVC3! Nice more or less consistent looking numbers.

Yup i don't know the details but i remember reading about this, probably one of the guys who attend EVO regularly can confirm here.

What the fuck. Come on Mr. Wizard! or whoever makes these decisions...

That begs the question, you guys think that EVO will go back to last year's set-up (last year's venue for every day except Sunday, which would be at Mandalay Bay) or should they let Mandalay Bay rock for all 3 days in 2018?

2016 was also cheaper than 2015, iirc. I felt like it really inflated the numbers, a lot of people didn't show up to their SFV pools. One of my buddies played two games and made it out of his pool.
Easier to burn $30 and forget about than $75 I suppose.

Edit: Yup, 2015 was $70+entry fees and all that good stuff. Last year had the perfect storm of the bargain venue fee and a huge release for the fgc.

I don't think it makes difference for us who watch the stream online, but for those who attend it i hope they return the old set up. personally i would never register for playing any game if it's expensive knowing that i have no chance to win anything, so probably that what happened cheaper fees for entrants equals more attendance.

EVO always hosted at Mandalay Bay?
Because that seems expensive as hell, probably explains the price and number of entrants?

SFV drop was to be expected, even counting for the general animosity a drop was likely. Still a drop this magnitude isn't a great look.

Bigger story is the Smash numbers, that drop is almost as bad as the SFV one. I don't follow the Smash scene that closely so I have no idea what's happening there.

Tekken 7 numbers are extremely impressive, highest number of entrants for a 3D fighter ever. Lets hope it carries this momentum into the following years.

GG and UMVC3 holds are impressive, particularly Marvel 3 holds as it even has a new game over the horizon that has people preoccupied.

The BB and KOF numbers being low aren't surprising, neither games had any momentum in the tournament season all year round.

Injustice numbers are lower than expected but not that bad.

No. This is the first year where all of the tournament goings are at the Mandalay Bay. Last year it was held at the Convention Center while finals were held at the Mandalay Bay.

That's why I'm thinking that the drop may have more to do with the venue move & the price hike that followed. I can understand if it was just SFV that saw a drop, but everyone else seeing a drop (sans Tekken 7) makes it look like something else was the main culprit.

Players can stay wherever including Luxor right next / connected to Mandalay which is like super cheap.

The 3 days there sure is increasing their venue cost compared to Westgate/Las Vegas Convention Center for sure.

Past EVOs were never 3 days at Mandalay. Some were 3 at Ballys/Paris or Caesars (This year was a bit expensive) or Rio.

Think it's just Evo in general that's the problem with their price hike. I was thinking about going this year but saw the pricing and immediately decided against it.

On top of the price hike & the growing animosity towards SFV, Melee not being on Sunday & the Wii U being dead could have attributed to the drops for Melee & Smash 4 respectively.

Not "always" it has been several venues through the years.

Still very impressive amount of players and biggest tournament in the world.
I was referring to 2017 being at Mandalay Bay for all 3 days.

So it should be compared to 2015 numbers if you want to take price in account?

Charging more but having less people probably makes organisation better while managing roughly the same amount of money.

Well this is the cost of having the finals in an arena. Tons and tons of people bitched last year about the commute to the convention centre, so they addressed those concerns and put everything in the same building. Unfortunately the Mandalay ain't cheap.

I also really think SF5 launch really drove a lot of numbers. Players do dabble in many games and I can see the influx and hype of the launch of a new Street Fighter driving people to attend/compete in as many things as possible etc.

They should just drop Mandalay entirely. It was a nice idea for a one-off because of the circumstances, but it's clear that the novelty is gone. Last year I saw no incentive to watch the finals in-person, and instead I just ordered a pizza and streamed the finals in my hotel room until SF5 started on ESPN. I can't imagine a regular spectator wanting to pay for all of that this year with HIGHER reg prices.

I don't think ESPN is airing Sunday this year.

Yep. People did.

Either way, new esports venues are being built up in Vegas. MGM and Caesars have dedicated esports teams trying to drive home these events as they bring in revenue toward their properties and so forth. This is what these guys see as the future of gaming in Vegas beyond just slots/table games now. They know their clientele is slowly dying off and they need to appeal to a younger audience.

I have a feeling these venues and deals will hopefully help drive entrant down. Either way, EVO will be safe as it is one of the biggest draws for esports every year so they'll get a nice kick back from Caesars/MGM or whoever they do a deal with.

Those T7 numbers make me very happy. It's a solid game and I encourage people to try it out.

Christ at the rest of the numbers.

That KOF figure is the saddest of them all. 14 must've really bombed.

KOF has always had a problem catching on with the US crowd so it being the lowest doesn't surprise me.

SFV not reaching all platforms and WiiU being dead can't be helping either
I definitely agree on the Smash 4 front. The Wii U is probably gonna keep dragging Smash 4 down until either the game gets ported or Nintendo announces Smash 5. The general price increase for EVO isn't helping matters, either.

KOF has always been an international game and traveling to the US from abroad isn't the easiest/smartest thing to do these days.
