Splatoon visuals comparison : from Wii U to Switch

So, I made two quick comparisons in the direct thread and it seems they were quite appreciated and the good Jonneh3003 gave me the idea to make a thread showing the visual differences between Splatoon and Splatoon 2. I thought it was interesting because, when the first game was shown, differences weren't quite as obvious as they are now, seven months of development later.

I've tried to pick the most similar scenes to showcase the differences but it's hard sometimes. I've also tried to pick only native resolution screenshots.

It's almost impossible to find matching scenes of actual matches, so instead I'll try to showcase technical differences, like how the paint is rendered :
Same here but with character models comparison :
Here again, character models :

If I find more good screens to compare I'll add them. Finally, I'll throw some good screenshots of Splatoon 2, showcasing the texturework in Salmon Run and the new lighting :

NOTE : some of these screenshots are featuring Depth of field effects. Considering there's some sort of photo mode in the game and that I doubt there will be DoF effects during gameplay (since it would be an actual disadvantage), it's probably not something that we will see a lot in game.

I wonder how long until someone calls it a port :p

It looks amazing, literally a generational leap. Thanks for going through the effort Lordkano!

I'll always feel a bit guilty about not enjoying the first game during its prime.

I wonder if it's even worth keeping anymore once the sequel is released.

Game looks fucking gorgeous. Top of the class art direction with excellent performance make it for a very eye-pleasing game.

yeah it looks great. even beyond the resolution bump the lighting is greatly improved as well.

also comparing old sheldon to new sheldon...whew

It feels like a generation difference between the former popstars and new popstars picture.

I very loudly described Splatoon 2 as a "glorified expansion pack" when it was first announced and shown off, and its 720p premiere didn't change my opinion. But a thread like this, more than the announced additional features, makes me really wanna eat my hat. Looks damned good and significantly updated.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Ink effects look a lot more profound now, the ink effects in the first look more flat. Must be the lighting improvements.

1080p/60fps is music to my ears eyes

Still can't believe there was ever a question of how much better 2 was over 1. These screens are just sealing the deal.

I could notice it when it was 720p so a resolution bump alongside lighting and graphics improvements is nice.

The style is also nicer with more variety in clothing and hair

It's great to see that they were able to bump Splatoon 2 up to 1080p/60fps docked. The game definitely looks cleaner thanks to said resolution increase.

The lighting improvements are amazing. Makes everything look so much better.

Those textures in that Salmon Run boss shot too. Whew.

As someone who did not play Splatoon I had a hard time knowing which screen was from which game at first.

It looks better, but not drastically better.

Let's not kid ourselves, the biggest difference is definitely resolution.

Not that it matters much. It's a nice looking game.

I agree, I do however thing it is cause of the Artstyle, it just looks very similar (for obvious reasons).

I would love to see a comparison with 1080p Cemu screenshots. I think it would be easier to spot the differences.

Lighting and resolution go a long way, it's not a generational leap (of course, the power difference from a Wii U it's not huge) but you definetly can tell.

I didn't notice a major difference in the trailers (I think when it was still 720p) but these images show a fantastic comparison. Excited to watch the direct when I get home tonight.

Question about Splatoon 2. I didn't play 1 as I didn't have a Wii U. Thinking of picking up 2. How important is the gyro aiming in Splatoon?

I absolutely HATE the gyro aiming in BotW, so if I would need to use it in Splatoon to compete then I might not even want to play the game at all.
