Ex BioShock devs announce FPS roguelite City Of Brass - Steam 2017, Consoles 2018

that screen shot they've been showing around to promote this is entrancing. this looks like a real cool gameworld to play in. also looks a lot like Bioshock gameplay wise. i always felt like the gameplay in B:I was dumbed down for the story itll be cool to see what they do w just focusing on that.

This trailer will appear in youtube videos in a year with titles like "Did you know that City of Brass was meant to look like this?" or "Check out all these things cut from City of Brass"

Looks interesting enough, though I'm not really a fan of roguelikes. Can't see the title without thinking of this:

My feelings exactly.. Rogue genre seems like a way to just hide how shallow the game really is.. And also usually includes a weak story
Actually, traditional roguelikes tend to have more depth and complexity than many other genres. Even lites like Spelunky, Necrodancer, Binding, Gungeon, and others have very skill-based gameplay; that's like the whole foundation of the procedural generation.

Like the only way you can say "roguelikes are just an excuse to hide a shallow game" is if you havent played many roguelikes or you've played a lot of bad ones

Permadeath? Ain`t nobody got time for that. Well, i don`t at least. Good luck to them though.

This man does his research.
Turned on by the rogue-like aspect. Will consider checking it out.

However, if Dustforce's "The Spire" ever gets done, my FPS rogue-lite money is on that, all the way.

Hmm...the overall concept is quite interesting to me. I watched the gameplay trailer, and it looks nice in motion as opposed to the screenshot in OP...however, the gameplay looks slow AF :/...hope they tweak it to be a tad faster...watching the same gameplay video at 1.25x speed looks better to me

Roguelite I'm in. Roguelike I'm out. Want progression with permanent upgrades I can use for new playthroughs.

Dead Cells basically made roguelites enjoyable again by letting you keep upgrades you bought for example.

If this game doesnt do anything like that its gonna be another Gungeon/Isaac for me.

Check out Rogue Legacy if you haven't already. I think this is the game Dead Cells used as inspiration.

Did the same after your post and I have to agree. At 1.25x speed the game almost looks totally different. Much different feel to it.

Guh these threads are always a page or two of people whining about roguelikes/lites like they're entitled to play every game or something.

I'm excited.

It's funny what a difference speeding it up makes. This would be much better.

I think I'm somebody who liked BioShock combat more than most, but not without the BioShock level story to go with it.

Gameplay needs a lot of polish, but have really nice ideas.
It seems like to have some of Arkane's game influence.

There's quite a few of them that do that, persistence between runs is pretty common at this point.

Seems cool. I think we're still missing an excellent go-to FPS rougelite worth sinking more than a dozen hours into so maybe these guys can finally pull it off. Then again this doesn't really seem to be a shooter.

The only roguelikes I've played are Spelunky and Downwell and both after fantastic games. I don't see the issue here. 🤷
I mean looking at the thread, clearly the issue is people are tired of them considering there's a lot of them out there besides Spelunky and Downwell.

What is "Roguelite"?

Is this the new Soulsborne Metroidvania?

The general definition is that while Roguelites have permadeath like Roguelikes, they always have some sort of currency that stays with you after death so you can improve yourself for your next runs. So while you're technically starting over, you're getting stronger and stronger every playthrough.

They're great games for people who like roguelikes but don't have the time or patience.

Examples being Rogue Legacy, Dead Cells, EVERSPACE, etc.

Oversaturation.

I disagree, how many FPS roguelites can you name?

Tired of what exactly? Roguelite is not a genre or even type of experience, its just set of few rules.

I have feeling people are either tired of seeing "rogue-" used a lot and/or have played a lot of bad roguelikes/roguelites

To be honest I can see how that might happen. However spending some time with Dead Cells and Unexplored especially has made me remember how good the genre can be.

Tired of the "set of rules". I'm just reading the reaction of the thread and every other thread introducing a rougelite, I personally don't necessarily agree. And I'm well aware of what a rougelite is.

Normally I'm not into rogue-like games (unless it's From Soft), but the environment here along with the mobility of the main character makes me think I can actually sink my teeth into this if the quality of it is pretty high.

Eh while in theory the setting could be really interesting, the cartoony look kills my interest insofar as the successor to atmospheric games like System Shock and BioShock is... this.

Frankly I see roguelite as an excuse to extend the game time by making you replay the same low level content over and over.

I'm tired of indie roguelites.

At least it's not a fucking side scrolling sprite game. Now THOSE are oversaturated.
There are plenty of first person roguelites, like Ziggurat or Immortal Redneck. I could name a number of other worse ones too.

That could use some polish, cause such unsatisfying gameplay as the gameplay footage shows in a roguelite is just DOA.

This thread makes me wonder, what's Ken Levine up to nowadays?
