Kinda Funny Community Thread | The Fire Rises, Brother!

To be fair, he seems to be basically purging nearly every Twitter account of people from the video game industry (mainly in SF), not just Kinda Funny. Basically a totally clean slate. He seems to still follow (or at least conversate) with LA based video game personalities/devs.

Well, it's selective. He still follows plenty of SF folk like Andrea Rene, Alexa Ray, and even former IGN coworkers Sean Finnegan, Daemon Hatfield, Jared Petty, Fran Mirabella. So while he's tidied up his account it's clear that him and everyone at KF are no longer any sort of friends.

Well, I mean, Greg did call it an "adult break-up" during the last Kinda Funny AMA video. He likened it to how he and friends of his from high-school eventually drifted apart.

They are getting some good exposure today
PlayStation EU tweeted their That's You Let's Play video.
The USA Today featured them in an article.

I'm still amazed that they can afford to pay all these people enough to live in San Fran and also pay for the studio space since no one lives there.

Greg, Tim, Nick, Kevin probably get paid the most, followed by Andy, then Cool Greg, and now Joey. That's 7 salaries to cover with 40k a month in Patreon + Merchandise + YouTube ads + Twitch subs and tips. That blows my mind.

They also sell in-show ads, do partnerships with people, and maybe get paid to go some cons.

But yeah, it's impressive.

I wonder what changed in the past 2 months that let them hire her.

Greg's explanation

Hey--

Yes, it is great news!

I hear you. The statement was more "I want to make that work" than "we can't afford that." Maybe it was "we can't do that now."

It's no secret we lost Patreon dollars when Colin left, so hiring was kinda frozen until we understood where we stood. After KFL3 and seeing the support for the new shows and excitement, we were confident we could do this.

Thanks for making it happen! Greg

I'm surprised there's no activity here now that Danny's made his debut on the show. I'll admit I haven't finished Monday's episode yet. Mainly because it's about wrestling. :/

These two episodes have been...meh. I paused today's and havent come back after Danny started a soft defense of Shawn from no man's sky (apparently he knew him before getting into the industry?). I'll come back to it tomorrow.

I also wasn't a big fan of Greg talking crap about WWE 2kqi on switch. Maybe he's right and it's a completely gimped version. But they've said it's feature complete and comes out the same day. Why not believe them until proven otherwise?

And furthermore, why is it so bad if it looks worse? It was really weird that he went off on that.

Generally not feeling KF right now. But it's the dog days of summer when nothing's happening, so it's inevitable that the content would slump a bit. It's just unfortunate that it's right now, when they've got a new thing just off the ground.

EDIT: As an aside, I think one of the reasons I've become a little bit distant from KF is the difference in gaming taste. For example, we've had half a dozen games from Japan drop in the first third of the year with a 85+ Metacritic:

Yakuza 0
Resident Evil 7
Nioh
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Nier: Automata
Persona 5

...and yet the only one I've felt got any good discussion was Zelda (and maybe RE7? I vaguely remember them talking about it but I forgot). Greg can't get himself to finish P5, the most highly acclaimed game in a series he loved. None of the other guys have given any of the other games the time of day. It's weird to feel like this year has been a complete landmark in great games from a developer landscape many thought dead and yet all KF have talked about this year is: Horizon, Zelda, a port of a kart game, a broken multiplayer licensed game and a trilogy of PS1 remakes of mediocre games.

that might've been a bit harsh. Friday the 13th and Crash seem fine, just not my thing

I love the new formats and shows. Everything is so much more fun and snappy. Andrea and Danny are wonderful additions. KF makes me happy again.

It really is a lot of fun. So much more positive. Real positivity not forced like what was sometimes in the past.

Did anyone watch the videos they posted to Twitch? They streamed part of a housewarming party (Greg and Gen's new place). They were playing a knock-off of the children's game Don't Break The Ice (not a video game).

I'm a believer so far. Games Daily is really good. Granted I feel they could tighten the show up a hair at the end, but I felt the same about PSILoveYouXOXO. Plus tightening up KFGD could kill some of the shows charm.

Nice! Good on Tim for getting it out way earlier this time. I wasn't complaining about how long he took last year (well until they said the video would release AFTER the due date they initially set for non patrons which I thought was some mad BS), but a lot of defense I see him get for that involves people thinking "it just took that long". Now, of course editing such a video is a mammoth of a task, he said it took 80-100 hours IIRC, but the reason KFL2 came out so late is because Tim didn't start to work on it until around Christmas time, not because it just took that long. Granted I don't know if the rest of the year was just that busy for them but I assume he could have started earlier if he chose to. Anyway, glad he did this one earlier.

I like Tim, but idk about him on the KFGD. I get why they are doing it. Split Andrea and Danny 2 and piece and fill a show with Tim.

I like Tim, but I prefer him to just be on the Gamescast so we get fresh opinions on KFGD from the 2nd chair.

What's with the 1 second of weird music that is super quiet before the Kinda Funny Games theme at the start?

Are you talking about the Kinda Funny Games Daily videos? If so, that extra bit of music is leftover from the "stand-by" screen during the Twitch stream. I kind of wish they'd edit the videos better to eliminate that bit. The other day, it wasn't there, so maybe they are starting to remove them.

Telltale discussions are always a bit exhausting. For me the discussion begins and ends with "your engine sucks", if someone tries to go beyond that - make financial arguments and whatnot... As a consumer I could give less shit about what the companies "reality" looks like. Greg's comment from Telltale's perspective especially was weird, because I don't think it necessarily lines up all that well. [paraphrasing] "The Walking Dead was a success so we gotta keep going no matter what. If we don't develop 20 games at the same time, we might bust up in another second."

Huh wow I don't know if I've ever intentionally put thought into that, but yeah I always find the Telltale discussion on the show samey when it gets brought up. Didn't see this recent episode you're referring to though.

Ahh thanks yeah it pops up in the podcast's too not a huge deal was thinking I was going crazy or just a obvious but small oversight.

The Part4 of this week's GoG is a bit of a bummer That was so superficial, not even knowing what Jimmy Carter did apart from the speech, hurt the discussion specifically. Exchanging some generalities between "uneducated" people. That was to a degree always the case, but was very noticable here.

I love Greg but he really is a bit of a Telltale fanboy and handwaves a lot of their issues. Power to him, he clearly isn't bothered by the engine and such as some of us. One thing I do appreciate about Games Daily is how they try to inject some business realities into their discussions. Helps add some perspective and nuance to the discussion but sometimes it goes a bit far though.

The gaming side has been on fire lately in my opinion. Party Mode is one of the very few Let's Plays I'll watch and having Danny doing formal games punditry is amazing. That guy is just fantastic and has a great chemistry with Greg. One of the best things about him is even when he's negative or critical about something, he doesn't come off as such. He can articulate a negative point in a way that doesn't seem ranty or angry. That isn't easy to do.

BTW, KFL3 is live for $10+ Patreons and on 31st for free for everyone, also this month only at the $50 level you can get a peice of the old studio walls.

Yeeeesssshhhhh super awkward to see Colin in new KF videos.

I dissagree expecially if the animated series as ongoing so would be way more awkard if not there, expect them to write him out in the finally of this season. As for doodles that's all old content glad they are not trying to avoid stuff with Colin in as plenty of gold to mine from the old days for doodles.

Listened to today's KFGD and found myself disagreeing with Andrea. Her countering the argument that Nintendo shouldn't have modes tied to Amiibos with "it's their right!" and "Metroid fans will buy the amiibo anyway!" is just completely missing the point. No one's saying they can't legally do that. They're saying it's a shitty practice that devalues the games and is anti-consumer. Furthermore, assuming hardcore fans want to buy plastic figures is silly.

She's generally shown a pattern of writing people off as entitled and whiny whenever they have problems with a publisher practice. It's bad enough with Greg sometimes, but she just turns it up further.
