Apple Betas 2017 |OT| Half Baked

They've long needed the ability to group notifications by app in iOS. It took them long enough to make actionable notifications, I can't believe we still don't have notification collapsing yet.

I'd love for iOS 12 to fix that stuff and add inbox-like notification snoozing and the like. Older notifications (i.e. those that are no longer effectively 'breaking news') should be viewed as an inbox that you can easily triage, let you mute certain notifications directly from Notification Center so they don't show up there again, et cetera; likewise, where it makes sense to do so, a lot of them should automatically have expiration times attached to them.

That and broadening the ways in which they're actionable (and making that experience as rich as the newer notifications are) so you can do more stuff in the background of apps directly from Notification Center would make them all vastly more useful. It's annoying that (for example) I can only respond to a Mail.app notification with an email reply when it shows up as a banner, but not after that banner's been dismissed to Notification Center (at which point the only options are to archive or to mark as read).

According to this video, Notification Center now displays all notifications at once instead of hiding "earlier" ones behind a gesture.

Good.

It's a start.

Now if you want them to put grouping options back in, then get out there and send feedback! Send it every time an update comes out until it's back. It was there once before, people liked it, they probably forgot about it and didn't know people like it, so send that feedback guys!

I know I'd like to see some grouping options again, and easier clearing options. I mean I understand why you can't swipe notifications away, because you would end up accidentally doing that when you want to view Widgets or go to the Camera shortcut. So I get it. Since there's no longer a space at the bottom for swiping to unlock, there's not a lot of room that isn't a notification on a full list. So I get it. But they could offer an option. I mean I don't really mind really. 3D touching is fine for me. But not everyone can do that and long-pressing as an alternative is really cumbersome.

Personally I'm mostly happy. I love Control Center, and like the new Notification Center paradigm. But I also know they all need work. If I were to make changes, here's what I'd do:

Control Center: The Music widget is almost more cumbersome to use now that it's not on another page. Since it's squished into a small 2x2 box, you can't tell the current play time or whole song title unless you expand it, which then you need to retract when you're done. I'd much rather the Music box take up a 4x1.5 size rectangle that shows most of what is in the expanded version. Even if you can't actually slide through the music from there, I want to at least see where in the song I am. At the same time change the top left toggle box to a 4x1 rectangle that works the same way. But fits better. Next, move music down above the customizable region so it's not ALL THE WAY AT THE TOP OUT OF REACH. (When I have a full screen of controls.) Also change the screen mirroring button into a single square, and make all three of those into customizable buttons I can remove and move around if I want. Then rotate the volume and brightness controls into 2x1 boxes next to each other. Also, the Alarm button could use a 3D Touch gesture that brings up a list of your most recently set alarms. Also, when a timer is running, display the time in the button under the icon. And when an alarm is set, display the next alarm time on its icon too. And when a stopwatch is running, you get the idea. Display more info in those buttons when the information is relevant. Also let me move the icons around using the same press and hold move as I do on the Home screen.

Widgets: All I really want here is for Apple supplied widgets that can sometimes be empty, i.e. "No Upcoming _____" should disappear. I'm talking about the "Maps Destinations" and "Reminders" widgets. There's NO REASON these should be taking up space if there's nothing to display.

Spotlight: The gesture to get to spotlight on the Home screen is redundant. You already have a Spotlight on the left end. Why do you need another one? I'd rather get rid of it. Instead, here's an idea. Why not make the swipe down gesture BRING DOWN THE NOTIFICATION CENTER?! In the world of large phone screens, no one wants to have to use two hands to open NC. So change that gesture to bring the NC down. Much more convenient. And yes, I understand the irony of replacing one redundancy with another. But it would be making it so much more useful for one-handed use.

The Mail widget should show recent mail. Not "Favorite contacts". So useless. I don't care about sending mail to people. I want a list of like 3-5 of my most recent emails. But whatever. I don't work in an office. For me email is all newsletters and junk. When I want to send a message, I use iMessage, SMS or FaceBook. I just want to see incoming stuff. Why would I want to email my dad?

I dunno. Just some ramblings.

Bro finally semi fried his phone (iOS 11) and watch (wOS 3). Nightly restore session, yay...
Not sure what he did, he tried to get some pics over to the watch but ended up with none synced but only 300mb left on the watch plus a constantly crashing settings and photos app on the phone.

Been dealing with iTunes for 30min already because it just throws errors all the time like usual 🤢🤢

PB2 likely tomorrow?
I was hoping for today. But I'd rather they fix everything they can first. If it does come out tomorrow hopefully some Apple YouTube channels will have their reviews up and show off if there are any real big issues with it first. All I really want fixed is the app switcher's tendency to not close apps and get stuck partway through animations.

The EverythingApplePro video I posted above has some really nice changes I'm looking forward to though.

Feedback, feedback, feedback, people!

I honestly don’t even remember how to submit feedback for the iOS public beta anymore. I did some last year but I forget how

Followup: The fool didn't have a pre-iOS 11 iTunes backup and hasn't synced to iCloud for 75 weeks. So basically he's stuck with iOS 11 lmao.
But of course I only figured that out after wasting 2 hours trying to downgrade to 10.3.2 directly which got the iPhone stuck in a recovery loop. Finally found sb online who solved it by downgrading to 10.3.3 beta instead and that worked.

So yeah. Heads up just in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation.

The swipe down gesture puts spotlight into focus and brings up the keyboard for immediate action, whereas the left end/widget screen requires a further action of reaching up and clicking on the spotlight text box to be able to search. This functionality is much more useful than having another way to access Notification Center.

I'd like to be able to tell Apple watch that I'm injured (ligaments busted level) and stop telling me I can do better.
There more to health than fitness... Go screw yourself Siri.

I just want them to replace standing with steps. My watch gives me the standing goal even if there's no way I've stood for 12 hours.

Never got why steps wasn't the 3rd ring so I didn't have to download a 3rd party app to display them.

Agree with that too.
I've constantly woken up with 3hrs of stand time logged, so I'm either Sleep walking or its wrong

If this were a movie, this is the part where it’d jump cut to a scene of you raiding the fridge and doing naked burpees in the middle of the night, eyes closed and snoring, while your Apple Watch slowly ticks up the numbers.

The activity app on the watch shows the step counter at the bottom. Unless you were thinking of a complication or sth

But yeah, there needs to be a day-off option that holds the streak.

Yeah, complication. I use Pedometer++ mainly so I can have a widget on the phone and the complication on the watch face.

I also agree with a day off option. Also, would love to see a way to log a workout after you did it in activity, unless I just don't know how to do it....

It's not about standing for 12 hours. It's about standing for 1 minute per hour 12 times a day. It's just a little nudge to remind you stand up and get your blood flowing if you've been sitting down for an hour.

Oh well damn, you learn something every day!

The stand goal only requires you to stand for 1 minute in each of the 12 hours of the goal.

Never on your phone till the end of the beta.

Hopefully 2 is an upgrade.
Eh I wouldn't say never.

I've never had any big issues in a beta. Deciding to install on your phone depends a bit on your tolerance for the battery loss and sluggishness, and how much a crippling bug on your phone for a day would cripple your life before you go home and restore.

To me I typically jump into the beta at some point because the excitement of the new updates is refreshing and worth the downsides to me.

If the beta were guaranteed phone hell, they wouldn't make it public.

This worked for me in PB1 and still works in PB2.

You're talking about long press on the ">" arrows to get the menu (with Open/Open in new tab/background/add to reading list etc..) to open up right?

Yes. Hasn’t worked for my 10.5 at all in 11 (DP1, PB1 & 2). What device are you using?

With how little I use spotlight I’d rather have another way to access NC one handed personally.

So on my 7+ in safari, whenever I bring up the Bookmarks page, which I leave on Favorites almost all the time, the page slides up and when it’s at the top the search bar pops down out of nowhere. Caused me to tap the wrong site a bunch. Anyone experiencing the same?

Just switched from an iPad mini 4 to one of the new 9.7” iPads and booooy does iOS 11 run better on the A9. Multitasking stuff also feels much nicer to use on a larger screen.

Excited for the new Files app. Have a question related...

My brother takes a lot of videos on his iPad. He's not the best technology-wise, but any recommendations for an external storage device for the iPad to back up photos and videos?

Is something like this any good? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MY4GICD/?tag=neogaf0e-20 Apparently to transfer you have to use the storage device's app. Maybe the new Files app will make things easier.

As expected so far the Files App is low functionality and basically useless for me because of all the restrictions compared to macOS. No better that Documents by Readdle and PDF expert have been already for a while. Hopefully it improves over time and at launch.

I kinda want the iPad multitasking of iOS 10 back, but add in the iOS 11 ability to move windows from left to right.

It's better because all compatible multitasking apps are in one list, instead of a dock that doesn't change. I find myself using fewer multitasking apps now than I used to as a result. Because I can't anticipate and put those apps in the dock.
