Australian woman calls 911, shot dead by responding police in Minneapolis

God damn America what is wrong with your cops?...

cynically it might take a white woman dying before something actually happens

Why cynically? Executing minorities opened the door for untouchable cops. Because most of the country is OK with that level of brutality against others. I really hope this gains traction for totally selfish reasons. But we've got a serious problem here. It's flatly ignored by a large chunk of our population because it's not happening to them.

So the cop in the passenger seat shot in front of the cop in the driver's seat? The hell?
I would be surprised if his partner didn't have to go see a doctor for having a gun fired in such close proximity in a small space. His ears must have been ringing, not to mention the possible trauma of seeing someone being killed this close.

Man it SURE IS FUNNY how despite all these new body cam laws we have, they never seem to be on when there is dubious shit about a case.

Sure.

Is.

Funny.

It's like in the U.K. during protest marches how the riot police are supposed to keep their officer number epaulettes on for identification purposes.

But they're often unfortunately misplaced by officers having to suit up to the planned and approved marches, where they can sit in their vans for hours before being called out.

All these police must be in on some special secret about these things.

The officer in the passenger seat shot past his partner in a confined space and through the door at an apparently unarmed woman in pajamas who was reporting a suspected crime to them?

Unless there's some serious info missing to explain any credible sense of threat this sounds completely unwarranted on the available information.

Seriously the training of police, use of guns and availability of guns is going to have to be addressed at some point in US. It's inevitable: I just hope it doesn't drag on for decades with thousands of unnecessary and unlawful deaths before the truth is finally accepted and US gets in line with other Western countries with better regulation and lower shooting statistics.

RIP to the victim and condolences to her family: I'm sure they never thought this would be the cause of he death.

So an officer shot an unarmed woman in pyjamas while she was talking to his Partner through the car window. Am I reading this right? How the fuck does that happen, this reads almost like a hit.

This is unfathomable to me. I used to wanna live in the US when I was younger, now I never want to set a foot in there.

double jump

you haven't lived until a random little kid ask you "how do you make love".

(Jk)Twist, the cops were the ones doing the shady shit in the alley.(jk)

Rip to the victims, again. I hope this story blow's up.

Could there at least be audio? The body cams were likely not on because they were in the vehicle but the dash cam could have picked up audio; it just wouldn't have appeared in the frame.

I call bullshit on the cameras not being turned on.....

That's mighty fucking convenient.

in a just world/timeline, that'd be considered tampering with evidence/state property
of course in such a world blue fucking lives matter laws would be a punchline too

What the fuck kind of bullshit excuse are they going to come up for this murder ?? Another person executed in cold blood by those supposedly ordained to protect and serve. Not even surprised to hear their bodycams were switched off.

Minnesota newspaper The Star Tribune reports Ms Damond was dressed in her pyjamas when she went to the driver’s side door of the police vehicle that responded to the emergency call.
She was talking to the driver when the officer in the passenger seat pulled out his gun and shot across his fellow officer.

What...the...fuck...

There's seriously something wrong with the training cops in the US get. I'm not sure how even other cops could defend this considering how freaking dangerous it must be to shoot past your partner.

Sure is nice that the cops are investigating these cops to see what happened. I'm sure they'll uncover the truth.

That the victim was talking to the driver, in pyjamas, adds an additional layer to how bizarre things are, and I don't just mean for the image of it.

She was already talking to them, which means she was established - at least from the driver's perspective - as non-hostile. She was in pyjamas, which means a concealed weapon would have either been impossible to carry, or very damned obvious, and so the lack of one also quite clear. The officer in the passenger seat shot across his partner, risking them as well in order to shoot the victim that they had been called out to help. In what mind could the victim possibly come across as a threat in order to justify that? How strong must the paranoia be?

The population of the US is 4 times bigger than Germany. In 2015 a 100 times as many people where killed by cops in the US.

https://www.thelocal.de/20160922/nearly-1000-killed-by-police-in-2015-10-in-germany

There is a systemic problem with the tranning and lack of accountability for police in America.
In Germany, we also don't consider being a police officer to be anything but a job. There's nothing heroic about it, they're not considered to be any more brave than anyone else and they're just doing what they're paid to do. There's no discounts for police or anything that would make them feel like they're special somehow.

Just like the guy driving the garbage truck, they're working to make our lives better.

Also: German police is actually well-trained. It takes at least three years before you're a cop and the standards are pretty high. They're all about de-escalation. I've never seen any police officer doing anything harmful to a person. I think I'd lose my trust in the government if I ever saw anyone use excessive force or something. Just doesn't happen that often and when it does, people are held accountable for it.

The police culture in the US is just weird and completely out of this world.

Woman calls police for help. Police arrive. Woman, in pyjamas, talks to policemen in their car. Policeman in the passenger seat pulls out gun and shoots woman - in her pyjamas -dead.

What on earth could have happened? It makes absolutely no sense.

Officer feared for his life, obviously. Do they ever have to say anything else? Seems like "Hey, you killed someone. Please tick the correct box:

Feared for my life.

I might have fucked up.

Ah, he chose that he feared for his life. Let him go home now, he's suffered enough.

Still, I doubt that will fly when you have to explain how you fear for your life because a women in pajamas was speaking to your partner. The police in the US sure like to cover their own fuckups, but there should be a limit to that even for them.

Makes me wonder if the Police Academy movies may have been more fact than fiction.
Seriously, US police need to go back to the academy and do some serious retraining, particularly in the use of non lethal tactical options. Their firearm seems to be the go to solution for every engagement.

Will start substantiating his hate
A large pecentage of the US population still think they live the wild West. It's only logical that the same mentality is shared by a large number of police officers.

I know some body cams don't start till the officer leaves the vehicle, that could be what happened here. I don't know how it works in Minneapolis

Obviously, but we've all seen stories like this countless times.

There's a different standard for cops in the US and it's long past the "few bad apples" point. Nothing works to keep cops in check. Cameras? Nah, doesn't really change that much. Not being armed? You'll still get shot. Telling cops that you have the gun you're legally allowed to have? You'll get shot. Double shitty if you're black. Then you're basically already dead, because cops are obviously scared shitless whenever they see a black person doing suspicious stuff like driving a car or taking a stroll on a sidewalk.

Well, he murdered the defenseless woman. Him getting away with it would be impossible... right?

Since she's white, probably. But who knows these days?

Also I couldn't help but chuckle at the son's quote that starts with "America sucks..." Poor guy, I hope he gets justice and peace of mind.

Unless she was wearing a suit of armour for pajamas I'm mighty curious how they spin the fear angle with this one.

I agree though - from outside US seeing this news items it always seem to be followed by some claim of the officer feeling endangered even though it's often incomprehensible how they could have legitimately (i.e. if they were well trained and properly evaluating the situation).

Hope they got their stories straight....you know...making up another version of events.

I'm REALLY curious to hear the driver's version of events, provided they are truthful.

Well, at this point, they're probably trying to dig up anything that can be used to destroy her character. If she's ever smoked weed in her life or if she's ever been caught shoplifting, that shit will be dug up. Then they'll say that they couldn't see her hands clearly so when she reached for something, the cop feared for his life and had to shoot in order to ensure his partner's safety. It was a selfless act to make sure his partner gets out alive. Usually it would be unsafe to just shoot in a situation like that, but the life of his partner was in danger so he took that risk. #hero

I get that this stuff is tragic and terrible but you probably have a greater chance of being struck by lightning than being shot by a police officer.

When is the fuckin american government finally going to admit the cop system needs a major overhaul and fund/start it? It's ridiculous they kinda do nothing about it especially in our modern age.

Was she an Australian citizen? I don't have much confidence in American politicians to do jack about this, but if this became a diplomatic problem about other countries being afraid to allow their citizens to come here, I'd feel more assured that at least someone would talk about it

Yeah I know it's infantile and deeply shameful that it seems like the only way America will fix its shit is if other countries apply the stick

From the story the first thing that comes to mind is the evil corrupt cops in many 80's action movies. Seems like they wanted this person dead.

That can't be real. It doesn't make any sense. There is no logical explanation why that would happen unless the cop truly wanted to murder someone or they're not right in the head at all.

I've about had it with all of this news of violence committed by the police, and all of them basically getting away with murder because they hide behind the badge. If you're a cop, you're trash. It's now that simple. I don't trust any goddamn lunatic with a gun. Fuck the pigs. Fuck them all to hell.
People will do anything they feel they can get away with it. From eating grapes in the grocery store, to running red lights to police killing people

Some say dumb kids in HS are those who to apply to become a cop.

The police specifically turn down people for being too smart. There was a law suit about it a few years ago.

Having body cameras turned off should be a fire-able offense.

In this case they hadn't left their car, which one would think would be the point they would turn them on.

how long does police training in the academy take in the US?

In comparison to other countries it is very short. At least some places it is a 12 week course, while here in Norway it is a three year school.
