Ars: Early tests show bizarre issues with Nintendo Switch voice chat app

This situation reminds of when Verizon and Sprint iPhones didn't allow you to talk and surf the web at the same time. Seems like Nintendo isn't that far behind, that was like 4 years ago lol.

The app doesn't even offer a fraction of what has been available on other consoles for years. I really hope that if there's enough of a stink kicked up they will take notice. Not holding my breath though :/

I know, because I want this god damn app to work right, and if I have to post it a million times I will. Everyone posts "unbelievable", "insane", "it's 2017" and everyone here gets it, but maybe the numbnuts who made this app have no clue, so we should all tell them.

Many of us did submit our feedback already, and are now here to continue discussing how stupid this is

Wait what the hell? I was cautiously optimistic about this whole app thing, adopting a "let's wait and see how it turns out" approach as opposed to foaming rage like many others did from the outset. HOWEVER.... This is ridiculous. If, in 2017, your voice chat solution app requires the phone to stay on, meaning you need to disable auto sleep which every single person on the planet has turned on..... That is utterly, utterly mind blowing.

How did Nintendo not look at apps like Discord and follow their lead? Sadly, it's yet more evidence of a "head in the sand" approach to online. They've got some of the best bloody designers and teams in the industry but my god, they're so pig headed it's quite staggering.

Again, the app disables auto-lock just like the youtube app does. So the bolded isn't a problem.

Not to say the entire concept and execution hasn't been horrendous so far, but at least they thought of that haha

Dude we get it, you've been posting this multiple times in every Switch App related thread

It needs to be said over and over again. Complaining on a forum isn't going to do anything. Pissed off by this, upset by this, etc then actually provide actual feedback. This is one of the rare times where there is a direct way to do so to Nintendo. Use it. Remind people of this over and over again because there a lot of people that love to just complain and won't actually take the next extra step to get those complaints to the people that need to hear/read them. You see it in politics all the time to give an example. People that will bitch and moan about something but can't be bothered to pick up the phone and call their representative in the state government or congress and leave a message. Some won't even bother with the websites that will send a letter automatically where the only thing you need to do is fill in your name and added an email address. People that will not bother to put in the time to education people to vote one way or another in regard to something they dislike. Not even a family member. Reminding people that there is a way to directly give feedback is the very least one can do here to get Nintendo to understand what the damn problems are.

Nintendo fucked up the millisecond they decided to relegate voice chat to an app. These issues are just the icing on the cake.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more incompetent company when it comes to online-anything.

GameXplain said you can't even pull down the notification tray on your phone while using the app and voice chat. You immediately get cut off.

How the hell do they not get it? Isn't DeNA working on this? Is DeNA incompetent? Is Nintendo giving them backwards orders? Is this something that YET AGAIN only caters to Japan??

*sigh* of all the things they do right and they choose to get this so fucking wrong. I guess hopefully this being a mobile app and not a part of the OS/firmware would make it easier to update?

I mean, I'm not a developer so I have no idea if voice chat on a console is actually difficult or not. I'm not qualified to make a statement on that. But of course I think having to use a phone app for console-to-console voice chat is silly.

n-Space of all people were able to accomplish in-game push-to-talk on the 3DS. That would be an improvement over what we have.

I wonder if they could change their minds if feedback is enough and just fucking implement everything online related in the firmware. Even vita could do it with a fraction of the specs switch has

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Sounds like something that could be fixed in a quick update....unless its intentional, but even then they will need to include at least an option to support VC if the screen is off.

I assume it can. Sounds like a multi tasking fix.

I remember over the years many mobile games, apps getting fixes where they wouldnt disconnect, close when doing multi tasking.

Now I can answer a call during a game, put it on speaker and go right back to playing. And this is an online only game.

This just further convinces me to continue using Discord/Google Hangouts with friends when I'll want to talk. Here's hoping partying up as a team in the game isn't fucked on launch.

Serious question: what's the advantage of trying to voice chat with friends using this app instead of just using Discord?

The app will automatically sort the users into team-specific channels so you can only hear your teammates during the match.

Aaaaaaaaaand that's it I think.

Its because phones aren't great at multi tasking regardless of preference. Yet leave it to nintendo not to realize this until someone like ARS test this out. Quite frankly I'm sick of quirky nintendo when it comes to doing software properly when it comes to QOL or infrastructure. It's screwed their entire online platform to the point most know they aren't serous.

There's nothing bizzare about a real flaw of smartphones vs a laptop/desktop based OS.

I can't imagine someone (or a group of someones really) would have designed this as a feature. I mean, that's comically stupid.

They've intentionally designed the app to not allow your phone to lock/shut off the screen while you're using voice chat.

It's kind of like how the standard YouTube app does it. They could have allowed you to at least play audio while the screen is locked - they did it in the paid subscription app, and I've definitely "listened" to shows on Netflix on my drives home. But they chose not to allow that.

This is seriously bad and I'm genuinely considering just never being able to play Mario Kart and Splatoon online in 2018 and beyond rather than paying for the service.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
Pathetic.

I'm glad the only Nintendo franchises I care about don't necessarily need/have voice chat or much interaction with Nintendo's lacking online infrastructure but it still sucks for player who need/care about these features.

Considering that having the screen on for most phones will drain your battery extremely quick, you are basically going to have to plug a charger into your phone as well.

Which is mind-boggling. They knew they fucked it up with the lock screen but instead of finding a permanent solution, they resorted to workaround.

Tester Intern: "Sir, app won't work when the phone sleeps"

Lead Engineer: "Keep it awake then!"

This is a multi billion company. These numbnuts knew what they were doing. They were told beforehand what a clusterfuck of a solution this is and they still fuck it up.
