Ars: Early tests show bizarre issues with Nintendo Switch voice chat app

Bronetta

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
So Nintendos gonna have to come out and make a statement right? They're getting chewed up over how poorly designed and implemented this app is.

Nintendo isnt usually one to come out and address social media backlash unless its directly affecting their profits.

So, no in this case.

I love my Switch but I completely don't care about it being an online machine, so this whole thing is just HILARIOUS to me. I'm not even mad. LOL

Aren't there other group voice chat apps you could download and use instead that would run in the background?

Nintendo can fucking eat shit. Going with such a fucking stupid setup for voicechat yet having the fucking gall to eventually charge for online is beyond a joke.

Yeah.

Like, all of them.

But especially Discord.

There seems to be an absolute crapload of FUD about this.

Surely all of the options I had in Splatoon1 will be available to me in Splatoon2 without having to get this app and faff about right?
(Albeit having to pay for a subscription at some point down the track).
Being able to play solo queue turf wars and solo queue competitive?

I understand people expect it as an option, but I don't really care for voice. I didn't need it to enjoy Splatoon1, and like heap of recent threads, I never expose myself to the shitshow that is voice on Overwatch (QP only player).
What if I didn't even have a mobile phone?

Even the *solution* is fucking insane.

I don't have any huge issues with the implementation myself. The app certainly needs to allow chat in the background and I imagine after all the negative feedback they'll eventually fix it. Other than that I'm alright with it. My biggest gripe will be that in handheld mode I won't be able to get both game audio and chat audio over my headphones. But, I imagine for most multiplayer games I'll spend 90% of my time playing on the TV and I can use my bluetooth earbuds for chat and still be able to hear the TV just fine. My phone has great battery life as well, so I am not even too concerned about that. It's not ideal but I'm still kind of eager to try it out.

Smell the embarrassment. How Nintendo doesn't get flogged more for this is beyond me. The Switch may be a neat console and have some promise due to the portable nature of it, but the lack of games, poor 3rd party support, and ridiculously shitty online experience make it something not worth owning. And I say that as an owner (maybe not for much longer).

But if you have to TV volume loud enough to hear through the blutooth earbuds, won't your voice chat group also have to listen to your TV?

The Switch itself is fine and is worth the purchase, it just has a very limited and clunky voice chat setup.

There are three 20+ page threads full of people shitting (rightfully) on this, and all sorts of articles "flogging" them for it. What more do you expect?

And this has nothing to do with third parties or the lack of games (which is an opinion, not a fact- I have 18 games with a big backlog only 4 months into its life).

Nintendo always do weird, inexplicable shit. The reason to own their consoles are for the exclusive games.

This reads like something straight out of 2002.

If you think it has no games then go ahead and sell it now because damn.

I knew this was going to be a terrible idea ever since we first caught wind of it. I wonder if this will get mainstream attention and cause a stigma to become attached to the Switch. "You can't chat online with the Switch." That would be funny.

Serious? The store is full of cheap indy ports and rehashes.
I'm with you up until the point where you claim Switch has no games. It already has an impressive catalog for a system only 4 months old. Has some heavy hitters and great indie presence.

The online presence is embarrassing but they're definitely providing great software.

18 games and a backlog? I don't know, dude; sounds like an impulse purchasing problem vs. a plethora of great games.

I do think the issues have kind of been swept under the rug for a little while now. Barebones OS, no VC, less than stellar lineup in terms of volume, no headphone jack on controllers for wireless audio, etc., and now this whole mess which has been lurking in the background for some time now.

I still really like the device, but Nintendo still has a lot of issues to deal with, some of which may require a hardware refresh unfortunately.

It's unbelievable that switch did not have fully integrated online functionality from the start.

It's just mind blowing.

It just shows Nintendo is still clueless when it comes to services. Completely clueless.

There's like 70 or so games on the eShop right now, 80% of them are great.

How many of those aren't available elsewhere, though? I think that's what he's talking about.

If you play a lot of games on multiple platforms the Switch doesn't have much going for it once you finish Zelda. Splatoon 2 will help.

I don't think this will require a hardware refresh to fix the lack of voice chat built into Switch. It would take a huge UI and firmware upgrade, but it's definitely doable.

Sadly, I just don't think Nintendo gives a crap.

This all reeks of rushed hardware. Nintendo was sitting on Zelda, games were getting complete, nvidia had tons of chips sitting around and Nintendo had to just push this thing out of the gate because Wii U was deader than dead.

Hence the lack of an online infrastructure, Netflix, a comprehensive eshop, and its barebones UI.

Nintendo literally pushed out a system capable of playing games and downloadong games because investors would've had their heads if they went another year without making some profits.

UI clearly needed another year in the oven.
