Metroid: Samus Returns amiibo functions revealed; Fusion Difficulty, Fusion Suit

You NEED to use the amiibo AND complete the game to unlock all these features.

http://www.japanesenintendo.com/post/163362510634

The various amiibo do the following in Metroid: Samus Returns...

Samus Aran (Metroid Series)
Elon Reserve Tank (special ability recovery)
Metroid II Art Gallery (unlocked after beating game)

Metroid (Metroid Series)
Metroid Marker (tells you location of nearest Metroid)
FUSION Difficulty Mode, play in the Fusion suit (unlocked after beating game)

Samus Aran (Super Smash Bros. Series)
Missile Reserve Tank (missile recovery)
Concept Art Gallery (unlocked after beating game)

Zero Suit Samus (Super Smash Bros. Series)
Energy Reserve Tank (energy recovery)
Sound Test (unlocked after beating game)

Now there is some concern that the way to unlock the extra modes is to use the amiibo AND complete the game, rather than using the amiibo OR completing the game.

Let's hope NoA/NoE or the English website can clear this up.

I love the fusion suit. Damn, am I gonna have to buy an amiibo to get is or will beating the game suffice?

I understand it's unlocked after beating the game for everyone, but you can unlock it earlier with the Amiibo.

I need the Metroid larva amiibo

I assume all these modes can be unlocked through the game itself by normal means while these amiibos can unlock them from the start.

If sanity prevails, anyways.

EDIT: I'm very sure it means that you can use the amiibo to unlock the item immediately or play the game to unlock it for realsies.

Doesn't Star Fox Zer0 do this as well?

EDIT 2: Oh wait nope. I wonder why after beating the game do you finally get the option to do that?

The Google translation sounds like this:

  • During game play, you can use it as a "metroid marker" that tells you the location of the nearest metroid on the map.
  • After clearing the game, you will be able to use the new high difficulty mode "FUSION" that you can play with the fusion suit at the start of the new game.

Sounds to me as if you can only use the amiibo to unlock this mode after you beat the game.

I'd be really surprised and dismayed if Fusion Difficulty and the usual postgame perks (art gallery and sound test) were strictly Amiibo-locked, so I await clarity on this as well. I assume it's on a basis of "unlock it now if you have the Amiibo, or after completing the game if you don't", but it would be nice to know for sure (and in the first case, those of you with the squishy Metroid figure will get to try Fusion Mode from the start). I have no trouble with the other features being Amiibo-exclusive; functionality there isn't much different from how you can use the figures as a resource crutch in other games.

(I'm on an old 3DS without an NFC adapter anyway, so it's not like I'll be scanning my Samus.)

It doesn't really make sense to use the amiibo to unlock the difficulty after you have beaten the game.

Well, that's how it is listed on the Japanese amiibo functionality page. One function during gameplay, one function after beating the game.

How is that supposed to be a valid point? We're talking about Nintendo. Voice chat through abysmal smartphone app.

Only half-joking.

So is the usual post-game/X% completion stuff now locked behind Amiibo :( ?

I read it through in japanese... I couldn't find all the detailed info but it did say "you can also use amiibo to unluck stuff like concept art after you have beaten the game". This might be the worst amiibo use yet unfortunately. :/

It's two separate points entirely though?

This page is purely about what the amiibo functionality is in the game: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/hardware/amiibo/game/a9aj/index.html

For each amiibo, they have two bullet points. The description is structured as follows (for all 4 of them):

It could also be a bad Google translation though. "ゲームクリア後" is the decisive part. And here somebody tells us what it means:
I'm fluent in japanese, that definately means "after beating the game". Sorry! :/

The kind of things I feared would be implemented - so I bought Amiibo in the first place - are finally being implemented now that I'm over the plastic garbage.

Whelp, that confirms it. Awful amiibo use.

And to spring it on the Metroid fanbase of everything too.

It could also be a bad Google translation though. "ゲームクリア後" is the decisive part. If it means "after the game"/"after the game is finished" or "outside of normal gameplay" makes a difference.

Are the reserve tanks actual items or just things that happen when you tap the amiibos?

If the latter, that's easily ignored at least.

What is fusion mode? You activate it and it goes "hey samus you need to go to this room on the map [points to room] by the way go that room on the map, also you should go to that room on the map. Do you understand?"

I have a bunch of amiibo that do jack shit. I wouldn't mind one with some real content tied to it. Especially since the squishy Metroid looks soooo good.

The problem with amiibo has always been, offering something to people who buy it, without it being too substantial to take away from those that don't buy it. Personally I feel Nintendo has handled it as good as possible so far, but this is just awful quite frankly.

You HAVE to be able to unlock all those extra stuff by beating the game without the amiibo...

C'mon, Nintendo... don't be like this.

Fusion suit was also a bonus in the original Metroid Prime, but i wonder what they mean by Fusion Suit difficulty? Lower defense?

The only "weakness" the Fusion Suit had was ice before.

They better not have a fucking higher difficulty mode behind an amiboo. I dont care for the suit but a higher difficulty mode is too much to hide behind a paywall. Maybe without the amiboo you unlock the difficulty mode without the fusion suit? I mean that sounds more likely what is going to happen.

Yea this s the part where the "amiibo is hidden DLC!" crowd fights the "but I want them to do something meaningful for once!" crowd have their fight to the death again.

Who knows what this mode even is. Maybe it's just the same Hard Mode that is maybe already in the game as-is but you just wear a Fusion Suit and have some other gimmicky Fusion-related things in there?!

I remember how we went through this with the Falco and Fox amiibo in Star Fox Zero and it turned out all of it was unlockable without them anyway.

Sometimes they simply don't advertise this. See example above.

It's not really a fight when you have to pay for a basic feature. If it's not unlockable for everyone after beating the game, then it's straight up one of the scummiest things. Capcom got shit for on disk DLC, why should Nintendo get a pass

I'd rather have this then not have it in our version at all.

Fusion's Hard Mode wasn't even in the NA/PAL versions, for example.

It's better than locking it behind a GBA and a copy of Metrod Fusion (and a Gamecube GBA Link Cable) like they did with Metroid Prime. ;)
