Pokemon for Nintendo Switch given a release date of "2018 or Later"

Hope it's 2019. If it comes out in 2018, I don't expect it to be the huge step/evolution some people including me were hoping for.

It even fits the patterns for everything but anime. Anime is a bit of a wildcard here due to the changes of it.
It kinda doesn't, though? We've run out of new Pokemon reveals, we're going to run out of new Pokemon cards as of the next set... every time we've been in a similar situation in the past, we'd have had no hesitation in saying that a new generation is on the way (give or take a bit of denial about Sun and Moon from certain parties[/i[). The only real argument against is that we've never had a two-year generation before, but Game Freak have spent much of the past decade busting their own format and schedule- given the evidence we have before us, I have no real problem saying that I think they're doing it again.

Between where the franchise currently is, TPCi's willingness to start talking about Pokemon Switch already and the sheer business case for getting on the Switch relatively early, I'd be pretty damned surprised if we didn't see the new generation next year.

It could come out in 2029 and I don't think it'd be the huge revolution that some are hoping for.

I just don't see it.

I see next year being Mystery Dungeon

We also always "run out" of new Pokémon cards around the third or fourth set of each generation so usually after a year outside Mythicals. Not sure why that's a point of contention here...

I'm not expecting "Pokemon: Breath of the Wild" that some GAFers want. But I'd like some sort of thing to grab me back into the series after X/Y and Sun/Moon disappointed me.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Smash, Animal Crossing, 2D Mario. Nintendo ain't got nothing to worry about lol.

...Fire Emblem, Pikmin 4/Prime 4(maybe), 3rdPartys embracing the system....

Yeah i dont think we have to worry about next year.

Man, being a Switch user I really need this game but that also makes me wonder why they didn't release a proper Pokémon game in any non-portabe Nintendo console. Couldn't have been done for the N64?

Thinking Pokémon Mystery Dungeon too. We know it's in the works/under consideration

Can't wait for a repeat of this

Even though I don't like Mystery Dungeon

A big part of the series, especially for Game Freak, is portability.

With the Switch, there's no issue since you can use it as a console and a handheld.

Would make alot of sense - Pokken DX will probably do quite well this year...another Spin-Off to make the transition smoother for the fanbase before the big main release in 2019.

I really hope they implement some type of coop gameplay.

I really hope it doesn't happen :p

Really wonder how it's going to look...and perform. I thought the X/Y engine was horrible. I wouldn't even mind if it's top down again. Just give me moving trees and grass, Pokemon flying around, more interactivity with the environment etc.

It'll be like Sun & Moon but better fidelity. Don't get your hopes up too high.

I don't think a 2018 Pokémon Mystery Dungeon precludes a 2018 mainline RPG any more than Super Mystery Dungeon's European release stopped Sun and Moon happening.

SMD aside, the series has not been a holiday tent pole in the way that mainline RPGs are- SMD got a holiday release in the doldrums of holiday 2015. If Switch's second holiday is that feeble, Nintendo are in REAL trouble.

Gate to Infinity was November 2012
Explorers of Time/Darkness was September 2007
Red/Blue Rescue Team was November 2005

Only Dungeon games that weren't was Explorers of Sky and the WiiWare ones...

isn't this non-news?
"new pokemon game to release in the future..."

well, yeah.

Again, The Pokemon Company was being pretty coy with this announcement last month. The most concrete info they gave is that it "may" not be released for more than a year, which made some people think that it was a lock for late 2018. On top of that, some NoA PR guy said that it was releasing next year before clarifying his statement, but a lot of people didn't see that.

The fact is that they won't commit to a 2018 release.

I'd like this much more than the new Pokemon tbh. Super Mystery Dungeon was a return to form, still a bit flawed but pretty solid all around, after the disaster that Gates to Infinity was. I hope they'll stay in that direction.

If it indeed 2018 title, most likely won't be a new generation of Pokémon, right? Isn't a 2 years gap too little for this?

I'm 100% (okay 90%) sure its a new mainline title. I would honestly like a reboot of the series though. I'd be happy with all existing Pokemon, nothing new, but something interesting gameplay wise to make people want to play it instead. Possibly (don't hit me) real time combat?

Real time combat would RUIN mainline pokémon.

I'm not saying I disagree, but with Nintendo and Gamefreak you can't say that for sure. The series is in dire need of refreshing and I'm sure they'll find a way of doing it, and doing it in a way that amazes people, if only they're willing to take the risk

My issue is with Dungeon, not co-op play :p

Oh okay...well i really like the GBA/DS games, but wasnt a fan of the 3DS games. They just didnt look good in 3D compared to the Sprites on GBA/DS.

Im all in for a good MD Pokemon game...but if we are talking about coop, other spin-offs might make more sense.

Yeah, I'm just being unfair since I wanna the combat to still be turn based =p

But I agree they will bring new things for the combat for the new mainline title. They got much more power now.

You are not being unfair. Wanting real time combat elements is stupid in Pokémon mainline.

Honestly, I find 2019 rather early for a next gen Pokémon game and I fear it might be light on content with how much more work it takes creating more HD assets. The pokémon are fine (besides getting upgraded textures no doubt) but all the rest. for a 3DS game the time between games makes sense, but a switch game could be a considerably amount more work.

That is if they really want to take advantage of the power of the switch of course. Which I feel they will as the overworld in Sun & Moon look really good on the 3DS.

2019 isn't too early. It goes onto the 3 or 4 year generations that they have been doing for the last 2 1 years

Wasn't that already the release date? I'm expecting 2018 will be a gap year and 2019 will be the start of gen 8 on switch.

The series is in dire need of refreshing

new games still sold like water in the desert
pokemon go stirred up the entire world
interest in the series is higher than ever

No, they're not in "dire need of refreshing" and changing everything that made the series be what it is today

The series just had a refresh.

What sort of refresh are you wanting?

So help me, if you say "go back to the original 151"...

I don't really think it will be a 2018 title, Pokémon generations can't really be rushed mostly because they have so many things associated with them like anime/cards/merchandinsing/etc which have a lifespan of their own.

It may not be a late 2019 title but 2018 seems very unlikely.
