The Nintendo Switch and it's lack of an achievement/trophy system.

I'd love them. It's an industry standard at this point, so Nintendo's decision (?) on not implementing such a system is kind of infuriating.

Miyamoto said a couple years ago that they didn't want to do them and I really don't think they will change that stance.

Maturity, bitches.
I'm surprised they dipped their toes in with stamps in a few games but didn't go any farther with it.

Never really saw stamps as a substitute. Some games, would have one or two stamps tied to a specific achievement, but the majority were just another collectable.

That, and I'd have to post on Miiverse, with that specific stamp, to show off to the world I did it. Posting a screenshot on Miiverse did the same thing.

Nintendo just doesn't have a system wide, one size fits all solution. They've put achievements in their own games.

Yeah, not having them on the Switch is a big bummer and I find myself missing them whenever I'm playing. I love the challenge good achievements can provide by incentivizing trying out different playstyles you never would've on your own or seeing everything the game has to offer.

Of course this thread is now just another "achievements vs. no achievements" thread and probably serves no further purpose.

It's an industry standard feature on most popular platforms now. No cross-platform game would need to change much to include them on Switch. It'd be nice if Nintendo could at least implement them on a system level, but not mandate them, so that devs could choose to add them if desired. But at this point, I'd bet against them doing that.

It's so sad when I fire up Guacamelee! STCE on Wii U, and both Leaderboards & Achievements are gone from the main menu because Nintendo won't implement either into their systems.

You don't have to interact with it.

Why wouldn't you want people to have a feature they CLEARLY enjoy, especially when it is completely optional and you wouldn't have to interact with it if you didn't want to?

That's a stranger question to ask.

I've played 120 hours of Zelda, and I'd be way more inclined to go back and find a bunch more things in Zelda if they had an achievement/trophy system. Without one, I've moved on to the next in the backlog.

But there are achievement and a list of things to do. Finding shrines, korok seeds, armors, side quest.

If you played 120h and decided to move on it's because you already wasn't having as much fun as before, and that is fine.

I guess they'd be cool to have, but TBH I don't find myself missing them much when I play Nintendo systems. Just like a solid online infrastructure, I just accept that they don't have this feature and likely won't in the near future, if ever. I stopped worrying about the things that Nintendo doesn't offer, and just get my fix on other platforms. Rather I just focus on and enjoy the things that Nintendo does well.

It really doesn't bother me at all, I just play for fun not for achievements/trophies.
Never really thought about until I seen this thread.

This is false and I got no idea where did you heard about that. There are no rules about DLC and achievements. Some games get new achievements with free DLC and patches and others don't introduce new ones even with paid DLC.

Yes because I'm sure someone such as yourself knows more than a game developer in the industry right now and has shipped games on those ecosystems. No, you must be right, you must know everything.

Except multiple devs have talked about these rules existing. Harmonix even explained this as the reason why Rock Band 4 has no achievements for the new missions mode, because it wasn't attached to paying for new DLC, for a recent example from only a couple months ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Rockband/comments/6a740b/missions_are_coming_to_rock_band_4/dhc7bpr/

also note the more money you make first party you get to bend the rules a bit. Rockstar basically does what they want, for example.

Beating a game is all the achievement I need, but if you need some kind of achievement system to make you sit down and play a game then more power to you. Nintendo having/not having one doesn't bother me.

As an adult, idgaf about system wide achievements. My time is limited as it is, and We already have enough for most games and nobody other than the individual cares about the achievement anyway. Sounds more like bragging rights if anything.

I mean if game makers REALLY wanted them that bad they could put them in their game, which some people have and I'm pretty sure Super Mario Odyssey has in game achievements.

There were screenshots of some kind of achievement with a date plastered on the screen, though I'm having a hard time digging up a screenshot of that.

You try to keep an open mind, but lack of ACHIEVEMENTS is the thing that stops you from buying a Nintendo console.

"BotW is absolutely amazing"
"No achievements, no buy"

That does not compute.

Achievements arent the only thing I mentioned. Reading is fundamental.

That's a pathetic reasoning for being an open-minded person. You judge games because it has no voice chat and achievements? It must be confusing to you how millions of people enjoy Nintendo games.

I am not using VOIP on my phone to communicate in multiplayer games in 2017! You wanna reward them for their lazy band aid aproach then go right ahead. I wont.

I like achievements, they add a lot to my gaming experience and the mere fact that Nintendo doesnt even wanna make it an option on their console in 2017 is a HUGE turn off.

These type of things are BARE MINIMUM for a console experience these days. Nintendo wont even try to meet that.

I feel you on voice chat, even though I'm kind of glad it's not there, I do think the phone app is really dumb for anyone who is trying to use it.

Achievements though? Nintendo does implement those in many games for those who care. Personally I think achievements are one of the most pointless additions to gaming.

Still searching for the reason that it would be a negative to add achievements/trophies for the millions of gamers that love them?

good for those that don't care but it's an added challenge for me. It definitely prolongs the game for me as I like collecting them.

Doesn't bother me, devs who want achivements on their game will implement them on their own and does who dont want wont , im glad they arent forced to have them, Smash and the xenoblade series have had achivements with ingame rewards for years and a couple of third party ports also implement them within the game.

I see no need to require system-wide achievements. If someone wants to put achievements in their game they can, nothing is stopping them.

Honestly, don't care one bit that Nintendo does not have them. While the occasional trophy is cool most of them are worthless and get in the way of things. When something is 90% worthless what is the fucking point anymore? Just have your achievements built into the game for extras or something and only the ones that matter.

Because spending development time on such superfluous things would be a waste of time.

Doubtful that millions of gamers "love" achievements. Most seem to not to be bothered by them and would not miss them, Nonetheless some people really seem to love them.

If some developers really think that achievements add something meaningful to a game they are free to add them anyway.

Just beat (100%'d) my first game on the Switch, and after primarily playing on the PS4 for the past couple of years, not having that personal achievement recorded in any sort of way is kinda disappointing. There's no way for me to share with my friends that I just finished the game, nor will there ever be any indication of my accomplishment on my profile. The game will start to slide down my Recently Played list, and eventually completely vanish, removing all trace that I ever even played the game. That, for me, is the biggest upset about the Switch not having any sort of achievements. It's not about trying to have the biggest score or the most trophies, it's about marking milestones in your gaming history. I don't see why anyone would not want that.

Achievements are great. I love being able to look at a list of games my friends have played and seeing how far they got. It's really the one thing I wish Nintendo would implement system-wide to make an already great console even better.

I'd rather Nintendo focus on adding a Miiverse-type community system and those tags back over any achievement/trophy system. Really miss that, especially with a system that is more capable than the WiiU.

Agree. I recently called my friend out on his bullshit for convincing me to buy PS4 pro for horizon, when he himself never finished more than 1/3 of it. I don't regret my purchase at all, as I actually did finish and enjoy it. However, realizing that all that info is there, seeing how much your friends played, and documenting your own history, it's all really great.

I'd be happy if they just called it something like MyNintendo History or something and it just catalogued significant events of the games you played. Focus less on "achievements" and more on progress.

I was a bit miffed at their lack of achievements at first, but once I played Breath of the Wild I appreciated it not being there. Having an achievement list would've ruined a lot of the surprise of finding new encounters.

Nintendo has always been good at making accomplishments rewarding enough without needing an arbitrary "You did a thing!" indicator, and that was especially apparent in Zelda.

Games like ARMS and Splatoon 2 would definitely benefit from an achievement system though, but at this point if they were to put one in this late to the party they'd really need a twist to get me to actually care. If every achievement unlocked a dumb hat for your Mii that'd be enough for me, I really liked when Microsoft tried that with Avatar Awards, it's a shame they didn't pursue that more than they did.

I don't miss them at all, during the 70 hours I played Zelda or the 50 hours I've played so far of Splatoon, I don't think I've ever once thought, this would be so much better with achievements.

When a game is as fun as it is, you appreciate it for the gameplay, not the tedious tasks you're doing just to unlock a trophy which means nothing.

Lack of Achievements/Trophies doesn't bother me in a signle least bit.

In fact, I hate the notifications I get with them. It brings me out of the game.

Definitely don't care about an achievement system. If they are there great, if I enjoy a particular game enough then I'll go for them like I did in Horizon. Trophies/Achievements are not even a consideration when deciding to buy a game nor does it change my interest in a game.

With how video streaming/uploading is getting popular these days, or even screenshot sharing, I think that should be replacing achievement/trophy, especially if some developers have said that achievement/trophy system has a negative effect on a game's design.

Also, isn't it better to have a video showing how you've done something, than just a couple words in the achievement's/trophy's description? Take for example, the wheelie achievement in GTA, completing it will just show you completing it, but a video could show your friends that instead of picking some easy car-less area, you picked a busy road to do it in.

For the less-awesome ones, such as beating the game, you can always talk.

I used to enjoy achievement/trophy, especially ones that make me go out of my norm to do things, such as that wheelie thing, however, reading developers talking about the impact of the system on their game's design, I think I can do without them now.

An ingame-statistic screen would really help those of us that like to share though, I love checking people's weapon usage and arena's time on Monster Hunter, make custom in-game icons(or something) if developers want to allow people to show that they have done some challenging tasks.

Most good games have a decent replay value enough as it is. I really don't want to play an extra 100 hours of a game getting trophies when my games are backlogged. I just want to finish a game and move on to the next(if its single player focused). They're just lame padding anyway, and nobody cares you have a freaking trophy.

Then turn off the notification.

Then finish it and move on. They're a optional extra that expand the experience, yet some of you act like they are there putting a gun to your head.

Now that the devs of Rime delays their Switch port because they want to implement local trophies I’m inclined to say that Nintendo should have baked in trophy support... to keep the value of third parties at the same height and don’t cause any delays.

i don't care about achievement/trophy at all! But i wouldn't care if they put them on a nintendo console too, it doesn't affect my way to play

Xenoblade Chronicles has 195 achievements.
Xenoblade Chronicles X has 749 achievements.
I wonder how many XBC2 will have...

My idea

I like how the Super Mario games give you the option of obtaining a 5 star profile.

So for example in Super Mario 3D World you got a star for the following actions:

-Beat Meowser in World 8
-Collect all Green Stars in all worlds (excluding World Crown)
-Collect all Stamps in all worlds (excluding World Crown and the five character Stamps)
-Get the top of the flag in every level for all worlds (once again, excluding World Crown)
-Get all Green Stars, Stamps, and Gold Flags

My idea would be that each Switch game would contain this system but say for Zelda, you would get a Triforce for each of the 5 goals or in a Donkey Kong you would get up to 5 bananas.

Breath of the Wild would perhaps have the following required actions:

- Beat Ganon
- Complete all main story missions
- Collect all Shrines
- Complete all side quests
- Complete Trial of the Sword

You would then have a 'Wall of Fame' page on your Switch profile with a list of your games and your stars, triforces or bananas etc along side each title.

I love how my Nintendo Switch doesn't bother me with trophies/achievements. It's refreshing and it really has taken me out of the "I gotta hear that trophy sound" mentality.

Wait, so several Switch games do in fact have an achievement system, but people are upset because they're not at system level? I don't understand. What's the difference in end result?

8bit

Knows the Score
I thought I'd be more bothered, but after Zelda I don't miss it and have now turned off notifications on the PS4. I kind of liked chasing the more obscure types, but I don't think I have the time or inclination these days.

Friends can't look at your profile and see you've done something is the main complaint, I think.
