Digital Foundry: Uncharted - The Lost Legacy PS4/Pro First Look

The first Uncharted game on normal difficulty took me just over 5 hours to complete. I wasn't even rushing it.

Saying that for £23 that's alright with me anyway.

Really? That is significantly below the 8 1/2 hour average. The only way I would have thought that possible on a 1st playthrough would be if you skipped all the cutscenes and rushed thru on easy.

For me it was 8 hours long, nearly on the dot. How short did people think it was? :p

It's not just the post above, it's quite a common claim that UC 1 is a short game, whereas in truth it was an average-length game by most respects.

Uncharted 4 left a really bad taste in my mouth with it's garbage story so this is the first Naughty Dog game in years that I'm having doubts over picking up. It's cheaper than a full release but it sounds like it'll be the length of a full release, so that's good, but they've already dropped the ball with the franchise, imho.

Uncharted 4 may have a garbage story, but it's still miles better than 99.9% of all other games

So how long are we looking at here. He said similar to Uncharted 1? 8-9 hours then?

10 hours is waaaay over a normal playthrough of UC1, at least if you're a somewhat experienced gamer. 8-ish, I'd say (as does your link). And it can easily be beaten in 6-7 if you know what you're doing, without really rushing through it.

This. Uncharted 1 is much longer than people remember.

It's actually shorter than people remember. Many think it's around 10, and it absolutely is not.

5 is quicker than even I thought, but I don't doubt it's possible.

What is one man's garbage...
I actually really liked it and its characters. I'm particularly glad Nadine is coming back. She was a badass and there was definitely more to her then what we got to see.

It's a 7.5 - 8.5 hour game (Howlongtobeat clock it at 8.5), and I don't think I have never seen anyone claim it was a solid 10 hours. There's no way 5 is possible on anything other than a 2nd or 3rd playthru, on easy, with skipping cutscenes.

yeah my first play-through on PS3 was around 7.5 hours long, and then when I played the PS4 remaster I played all 3 on easy mode for quick play-throughs prior to UC4 releasing, and was able to finish Uncharted 1 in 5.5 hours. I'm assuming they mean around 7-8 hours when they say Uncharted 1 length and not 5.5 hours, so $40 for this game that started off as DLC is great value for me.

Can't say that I'm happy.

After Horizon, was expecting a bigger push with 2160p via checkerboard rendering.

Maybe the overall quality with checkerboard may not be as good as 1440p with ND engine (Killzone Shadow Fall already used some sort of image reconstruction on the Multiplayer to achieve 60ish fps).

In the end.... I'm pretty sure it will be awesome. But, you know, expectations.....

Tbh the HDR implementation is just as important, if not more so, than the resolution.

Heh? UC4 looks incredible for not being native 4K

This is so, so true. The scene in UC4 where you wash up on shore and there's a storm and tons of lightning. It looks fantastic in HDR.

But we already know that HDR is present. 2160p native at 60fps was my next big wish.
kidding

1800p or 2160pc. That's what I was expecting. Specially after the 4k reveal of TLOU Part II

But 1440p is also a great improvement.

Uncharted 1 length? Didn't they say 8-10 hours previously?

I'm not complaining, but the first game is only around 6 hours if you're going at a steady pace.

I think this will be a 6 hour campaign regardless of what they are saying. Every dev exaggerates when it comes to playtime.

That said Uncharted 1 took me 8 hours. Maybe a minute or two less. U2 was 10 and U3 took 8 again. I refuse to believe this game is as long as those U1 and U3 seeing as how it was made in just over a year.

But i have been proven wrong before.

The season pass owners really got a sweet deal with this.

I decided not to get the $25 season pass since my wife will want to play this too, and it's easier to share a disc between multiple PS4s than it is to share DLC. And it'll only cost $32 at Amazon/Best Buy.

How did they make what is essentially a full length game so quickly?

If this game is as good as it looks and as long as they are claiming, then people will be asking this question for years to come.

Even with Uncharted 4 as a base, this is still a seemingly impressive achievement. There have been plenty of sequels to AAA games that took twice this long and were almost no upgrade on the original.

Couldn't do 4k CB like Horizon....that sucks.

Where the heck is the upgrade??

?

What upgrade were people hoping for with this?

Assumption the entire time has been that it's all the UC4 tech, with new environments and story/NPCs.

Did people think they were going to go back and rework the engine tech for a piece of (admittedly substantial) DLC?

I think so. Just a handful of people but yeah.

Yea that's a great one. The first settlement in Libertalia is another great example. I'm looking forward to see what they do with HDR in mind from the very beginning.

Uncharted definitely did not take me 6 hours. I have no idea how people did that, at least on a first play through.

This and the Dishonored expansion are the most exciting games for me for the rest of the year. Can't wait.

Looks great, pretty much as expected really. Really can't wait to play this and glad to hear it's around 8-10 hours, so getting another full length Uncharted game is a nice bonus.

Shame they didn't go for a resolution boost on Pro (maybe with checkerboarding) as it would look even better on a 4k TV but it's still one of the best looking games out there, so can't really complain, plus it is basically DLC for Uncharted 4, so can't really expect them to make many changes to the engine.

So they didn't improve the visuals over UC4?
that's weird I was sure they did and I've seen many people who commented about the visuals being better as well as journos who got to play it.

Why so many thought they did?

My only worry is if the game will feel off for me without Drake. It's going to be a Chief/Locke situation kinda. I'm still getting it though.

Could be some refinements of the base U4 tech. Improved sampling on motion blur, removal of ghosting from AA, more foliage, more refined water, etc. Asset quality would remain the same but show some improvement in that case.

Because there is more to visuals than just the pure tech behind it? ;)
The base tech might be the same, but some of the areas, that were already shown, seem to trump areas in Uncharted from an artistic point of view.

I suppose the art/use of color is preferable to some people.

The video does not say that they didn't improve the visuals.

It says there are no "new" visual technologies added to the core engine, based on the demo. Increasing foliage, water quality, motion blur, etc. still happens without adding new techniques and VFX systems.

Glad this is shaping up nicely. Crazy to have had to wait a year for single player DLC though.

It started off as DLC but has progressed into a fully fledged standalone game. It's now as long as Uncharted 1.

You could say: "Crazy that we've only waited a year for what is essentially another Uncharted game" (re-using UC4 assets though)

It has MP too.

It's not a DLC though. It's a new game.

It's not DLC.

It's part of the season pass. It's meaty DLC and will be sold as stand alone, but it's still DLC.

Season pass owners don't need to feel like are "getting a steal" for something they paid for and had not been delivered for over a year.

How can a game be both standalone and add-on content at the same time? 🤔
