Iron Man is probably the most famous and recognizable, Master Chief is one of the biggest to anyone who plays video games.
40k is niche as fuck but still influencial because their designs have had great influence on far more popular works.

Considering how many god damn shelves Warhammer 40K books take up in most major bookstores at this point and how liberal Games Workshop is being with their license at this point I think its getting more and more well known to the general public. Not huge as the MCU or anything but I was surprised at how many people have read a book or few from the Horus Heresy series.

No one knows Warhammer 40k outside of the United States. Iron Man is more iconic worldwide among the general public, if only because of the films. My mom knows Iron Man.
As with anything else 40K-related, it tows a fine line between cool and uintentional self-parody. Some designs would make even Nomura think twice. They are very icomic, though.

Depends on the country? I'd have to go to the specialist nerd shop in Oslo to find any 40k books. Warhammers largest impact by far is from the RTS games (dawn of war/total war)
Just pointing out this isn't true simply for the fact Games Workshop is a company founded in the UK.
I'm speaking for the US. There are often as many shelves for WH40K and Warhammer Fantasy books as there are for Star Wars.

Gotta echo the 40k posts. Their power armor is a work of art. Even the grey knights (who some 40k fans hate for some reason).

40k Space Marine armor and it's myriad of variants are easily the #1 choice for me. Nothing comes remotely close.

I know it was a somewhat controversial choice, but I liked that the suits in Fallout 4 were basically powered vehicles you climb inside of rather than armor you would wear like normal-sized tactical gear that just happened to be enhanced. Basically one of the only things that I unequivocally liked.

Thats a good question. I'd consider the thing a mech as soon as the pilot can be housed in just a section of the thing, instead of along its body.
Say you can fit the pilot inside just the head, torso, limbs or cock (a la jehuty)? Mech.
Needs several mecha-limbs? Power armor. Even if its something like appleseed's armor.
i still hold that the emperor shouldve had magnus executed for consorting with the forces of chaos as soon as he saw the hornipples chestpiece.

Not to sidetrack, but do you find it true that Warhammer classic is more popular in the U.K., and 40k in the States?
Always assumed it to be a fairly large and popular brand; even if 40k is more low key it seems to be fairly influential
Armor by John Steakley is my hands down favorite Power Armor Sci-Fi novel. I'm not sure it's the best or most iconic power armor since the book seems to be mostly forgotten. But its what I think of when I hear Power Armor. He was a total bad-ass, the whole thing was about how he became The Engine persona when in the Armor gives it bonus points.

Guyver, Samus, Iron Man and Master Chief are easily my personal most iconic armors. My mother exposed me to Guyver when I was 6 or 7. Looking back, I've no idea why. The movies especially were kind of graphic in a campy way.
To non comic readers it is a suit of armor.
Not everyone knows it has all kinds of super things.
To most it is a mask that hides a disfigured guy.
It is like people putting Samus up like it should be a given when Samus has not been relevant since the NES and outside of fan fiction you knew nothing about the armor.
Iron Man is understandable, he has been around a long time.
Guyver the same.
40k has been around since 1986 with the game first releasing in 87, has hundreds of novels, comics, audiobooks, pen and paper rpgs, card games and table top games and was essentially raided for designs from many modern media.

I think the general public could recognize Samus before a LOT of the posts in this thread, especially stuff like Warhammer 40K.
But the threads more about cool and iconic ones, not who has heard of it more than others.

Its really damn good book. I remember reading it specifically because it focused on the Power Armor aspect. Pretty pulpy in spots but an entertaining read.
