War for the Planet of the Apes |OT| And for the last Twinkie too. [SPOILERS]

I saw this last night after finally watching the first two last week. man, what a great trilogy! I think this last one was the best one, and the first one was the worst one. pretty great saga for the Caesar character and woody harrelson killed it. just great movies.

the shot of Maurice and Nova communicating with each other with their eyes was some serious through the looking glass CGI shit. I almost cried. she was so good in that role.

EDIT not even mentioning bad ape. bad ape was so fucking good.

The thought of Woody Allen playing the Colonel has me cracking up rn

I swear to god the ending of this film looked like Matt Reeves was a huge fan of Kubrick's Spartacus and decided to basically do that ending down to the same lighting.

In fact, it looked so much like a 60s Kubrick joint, I was half expecting a future epilogue with an Ape drinking from their new watering hole, only for another ape to approach and eventually find a stick to start the conflict all over again with.

Saw this earlier. It was ok.

I think my main complaint would be it perhaps needed a few scenes to bring home that this is essentially the end of humanity and to really drive home that this is a civilisation coming to an end; for me it needed a few less smouldering ape face shots and a few more scenes of what is basically the end of the human world, some poignant shots of the shattered remnants of society, cities reclaimed by nature, technology in the dust etc etc.

I'd also say that escaping the compound seemed a bit too trivial, a touch contrived; a single guard keeping watch on the apes who is dumb enough to enter the ape prison alone and lock the door behind him, and then an entire garrison conveniently looking the other way as every single ape goes out of a hole in the floor or along the wires in the sky.

Comedy relief 'bad ape' I'm not sure was needed, the tone is darker than that throughout so his moments although well done didn't really fit for me.

And finally it would (for me) have been more powerful if the two remaining sides of humanity had essentially wiped each other out rather than a very one sided affair and then a convenient avalanche to wipe out the winning side.

I enjoyed it, but just felt it could have carried a bit more weight. Obviously the effects work was astonishing throughout.

.

you should watch the YMS (your movie sucks) review of this. Yeah the jail break bit is poorly written and put together.

I liked it and I posted a page back - one thing I did think a bit was this

surely all them chimps stink and the little girl would have to deal with it? Very strange

It's alright. I went in expecting a little more "war" though. They should have called it Escape of the Planet of the Apes.

Just saw the movie, really loved it. Very emotional and felt very fresh. The apes look absolutely fantastic, this is the best motion capt. CGI I have seen in a movie.

Caesar is such an fantastic character, one of the best I have seen in the last years. I will miss him!

Oh and surprisingly the soundtrack is very good. Thumbs up!

Just watched it... Hum it's good but completely not what I expected. Kinda disappointed I must say.

I prefer the first two, Dawn was actually "War".

Just got home from watching.

I was so disappointed with this movie. It felt more like a bad episode of Flash rather than a blockbuster.

- movie was not about a war at all
- forced sentimental bullshit constantly
- made no sense logically
- bad plot.
- this movie did not advance the planet of the apes storyline. I was hoping to more of a bridged between this and and the original. But this was more of a 2.5 or a 2.1 rather than a proper 3rd installment.

In my opinion this movie should have gone towards showing how apes progressed towards aristocrats and classists

Well, I'm pretty disappointed.

I pretty much loved Rise. It set things up perfectly and had one of the best executed moments in recent blockbuster history. It hit all the right emotional beats and had good set pieces too. The story was also told quite well.

Dawn fell off quite a bit. It looked well, but the story wasn't that well thought out and it felt pretty schlocky for a successor to Rise. It was nice to look at, but that was it for me.

This one was way closer to the second than I would have liked. The first third was pretty well done and it felt well thought out. After they leave the woods and meet the little girl though, the movie starts to fall apart bit by bit.

There's just so much stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense. The broad story strokes are okay, but so much stuff in the details feel wrong or cheap. The reason why the 'donkeys' work at exterminating the apes with the Colonel doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me - Snow wanted to start a new life asap and could have left by himself without a problem. Instead he choses to work against the others for the man who killed his friends. The escape sequence and the reinstating of Caesar as the Idol and leader of the apes didn't feel earned. Every time in the last two movies when they mention how intelligent the apes are - they just say it and don't show it. When the Colonel is astounded how Caesar could put all the pieces together e.g.. Everybody could have done that - you don't need to be a genetically improved ape to do that.
Or regarding tactics - when they find bad ape, they are just standing in front of a dark chimney guns locked, well knowing that the person has a shotgun and tried to kill them before. One shot and they would all be dead. They also chose to storm in on horses every damn time from the front into blazing guns, when they could use trees to their advantage. Why wouldn't warn Caesar every god damn ape in his camp when he realized that there were soldiers infiltrating?
At least his wive and child should go to a safe place, right? Nope.

All of this might read like I'm nitpicking, but they nailed that concept in the first one and here it just doesn't sit right. Even worse, they keep adding more and more pieces to the picture that don't sit quite right.

The fight sequence at the end... It all felt very much like a video game story. The concept was great at times, but the execution was very flawed. The whole sequence in the camp operated on silent film logic - if it's not in the frame, we can't see it/hear it.
Why the ape with the grenade launcher had to blow up the crossbow guy instead of fulfilling Caesars plan of blowing up the fuel tank I don't really get -well, the cynic in me say, it's because the protagonist HAS to deal the final blow. And why Caesar just makes his injury known after weeks or even month of hard travelling and then just conveniently dies.. It's just not that well written. It feels like it's written around the setpieces and not like a coherent story that's being put into pictures.

I don't know, I expected more when everybody said this would be the best one.
Seems like the franchise is loved for different things than I expect from a good blockbuster. This feels like we got a Lost World two times after a Jurassic Park kind of quality movie.
It was very well acted and it looked pretty amazing though. They squeezed every penny out of that budget into the right parts.

Worst of the three purely because it descended into 'it's this type of movie so we have to do this type of scene' style bollocks three times because it was three different movies.

Still better than any of the last 5000 superhero films though.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
This movie was pretty boring honestly. Dawn was better.

Captain America still has the best movie trilogy since Lord of the Rings.

That was...the worst one? I just watched Dawn for the first time just a couple days ago and LOVED IT, thought it was as good as the original and a masterpiece blockbuster. I heard criticism from someone who didn't like it much because it was too cliche and on-the-nose - I brushed it off before seeing it, but it turns out he was exactly right. Compared to Dawn, it's so much simpler and blunt I am shocked it was made by the same people - although the writer mixup probably explains that.

My worried were apparent right at the beginning with the Vietnam slogans on the helmets...please. The other two movies had their cliche moments but it's forgiven when they're made believable and interesting (my favorite was in Dawn when Caesar kills Koba - I could finish their sentences but it was still a great moment). This example is just a pop culture reference with no thought put into it. At least after that, the movie is pretty great up until the focus on the prison. Remember how the other two movies were great because they had good and bad apes and humans with different motivations and points of view? Fuck that, let's make all the on-screen humans Nazis except for one innocent child who pretty much assimilates into ape culture. No Malcolms or Williams found in this film. Probably the reason why I'm in the minority is that I've interpreted the films differently and had a more optimistic view that the humans and apes could coexist if someone like Malcolm could explain to the military that they just want to be left alone. I love Caesar, and I want Andy Serkis to win a lifetime award for his work, but I was disappointed in his turn in this film. Not only does he become like Koba, he like Colonel McCullogh as well. They both justify awful methods if the end results is survival. He just shrugs off all the dead humans now that he won the battle. You don't remember Will and Malcolm?

This whole movie's biggest flaw is the human characters (really just one crazy dude and an army) are represented by a fringe sect - why did humans become the only villain? I rather wish this movie was a war film so we could see the divisions among both sides rather than the clumsy western/prison break/Exodus hybrid it is. Oh, and Dawn was not an action flick until the end, it was just as dramatic as this one. I could go on but I've made my point. It's not one of the greatest trilogies - it's just a decent one with an unexpectantly strong middle.

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
I thought this was a fitting end to the trilogy, even if its not as epic or as good as Dawn. The title of "War" is a little misleading, since that describes the backdrop more than the main story. This is like Exodus, but with apes. Dawn did a great job of keeping the ape and human sides three-dimensional, so it was disappointing that the humans are reduced to villains this time around. It makes sense to have humanity destroy itself, since that's one of the main themes of the series, but the final battle is not compelling with the apes only tangentially involved. And the apes escape the prison rather easily, so the entire climax ends up being anticlimactic. But overall, its still a compelling drama and excellently paced.
