Nintendo confirms Metroid: Samus Returns’ Fusion mode can only be unlocked by amiibo

From the OP article:
"By scanning the new, squishy Metroid amiibo, you’ll receive access to the mode that provides a new level of difficulty and Samus’ Fusion Suit from Metroid Fusion."
From Nintendo's Facebook:
"In Metroid: Samus Returns, the Metroid amiibo unlocks Metroid Marker, a tool to help you find nearby Metroids. In addition, it will also unlock Fusion Mode, a new mode that offers increased difficulty and features Samus in her Fusion suit. Note that Fusion Mode will only be available after finishing the game at least once."

Ok? Glad we sorted that out.

Wait and see is a stupid response in light of the voice chat solution. We waited and we saw it was exactly as stupid as it sounded.

What exactly is hard about marking the Metroid's locations though? Followed by an "increased difficulty", the description contradicts itself. Especially when reffering to Fusion out of all the games.

^I'd like to know what's giving you that confidence. All messaging points to the opposite.

Yeah, are you 12? You're the only one throwing a tantrum in this thread.

Also reducing the issue to a hatred of toys is disingenuous and proves you're here with an agenda to defend Nintendo regardless of the opposition's view. Have fun being a child, I guess.

Pretending cosmetic loot boxes are somehow comparable to locking away standard features behind limited physical DLC is another level of delusion.

More tantrums...

Listen. Everything is getting DLC and has for a decade as publishers and developers need to find more ways to be monetizing their products and services. Investors demand no less from Nintendo as they demand of everyone else. Nintendo could have gone many different routes, all of which in my opinion are far worse. Loot boxes, with day 1 DLC sometimes pay2win different price tiers store exclusives several season passes AND loot boxes designed by the gambling industry none of which is future proof.

They went with toys. Toys that work more than once. Is physical. Can be traded, given or sold and to some people, nice looking and enjoyable. That doesn't lock out more content than anyone else is or even close.

Now the supply issue is very bad and I 100% agree that isn't acceptable and I can understand people not wanting to buy the amiibo. I don't buy all season passes or DLC for other games, otherwise assassins creed would already have moved me to the poorhouse (but one of countless examples.)

Some people seem to say the DLC is great, no problem at All, just want it digital (hence my joke.)

Now I will repeat myself yet again, it isn't an either or, defend or be a consumer advocate, you don't want to buy the game and play it because of this amiibo then no one is forcing you, I'm not even asking you to. You can buy the game and not buy the amiibo as well. You can even boycott Nintendo until end of times for catching up to horse armors finally and go play other games.

It really, really doesn't contradict itself. It unlocks 2 separate things. Your opinion that Fusion was easy doesn't matter much when all messaging points to Fusion mode being a harder difficulty setting.

I am apparently a weirdo because I pre-ordered these new Metroid amiibo and the game before hearing about this hard mode, but I'm honestly just happy to hear now that as a Metroid fan, these amiibo won't just be sitting on my shelf, they will apparently also be used in the game in a meaningful way. I can see why people are upset, but as someone who actually enjoys having these figurines sitting around, I'm just glad they are being used for something besides making my gaming space look more ridiculous!

Yes Nintendo has me by the balls

I'm glad I'm not alone buddy. The moment I saw the squishy Metroid Amiibo, I just knew I had to have it. :D

Guess we will just have to wait and see. I said what I had to on the topic.

Nobody is throwing tantrums but you, my dude.
Seriously, nobody here is throwing a fit. The disgust from this piece of news is justified.

Oh, and the Metroid Marker is part of the regular playthrough, when you use the amiibo and haven't beaten the game, it's not part of the increased difficulty, which is unlocked with the amiibo after beating the game. Some bad reading comprehension there.

Here's what 's gonna happen:

This game will sell wonderfully by Metroid metrics and Nintendo will also sell those amiibos faster than they can make them, laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm in for both.

I'm getting the game and the amiibo, but it does seem like a dumb decision.

That said, if you were interested in the game before you knew there was a hard mode it seems strange to swear it off now.

and here we go again with people speculating theres just 1 hard mode...

Can't we just wait for either a official answer or the release to see if "Fusion" is another one?

Hard is a relative term. If there was a hard mode, hard would be normal because there is Fusion mode. There is no difference between:

Easy ----> Normal ----> Hard and Normal ----> Hard ----> Fusion

Even if you switch Hard and Fusion, you are still putting an entire game mode behind ridiculously priced Amiibo that most people won't be able to buy even if they wanted to. Stop defending this garbage.

Fusion outside of Japan. Only the Japanese version had it.
I remember fusion being harder than the other Metroid games I've played. Was it a renaming of the default difficulty (like DMC3:SE's hard mode was the OG's normal) ornwasnit even harder than what everyone else got?

I'm actually asking an honest question—please keep me out of whatever arguments you're having here.

I am disappointed. Why...

WHY

Nintendo, lately you've done a lot of good things. What idiot came up with such a thing and ruined everything?

What "good things" besides making games? Everybody in this industry makes games; that's what they're in this industry for. I don't feel like they should get credit for doing what they're supposed to do. Everything on the periphery has seemed to be bad to me.

-Changing to a pay model for that shit they call online and party chat.
-Little support and updates for functionality for the switch outside of games, like apps, etc.
-All the NES classic bullshit (soon to repeat with the SNES classic I'm certain)
-Shortages of amiibo STILL
-This stupid metroid dlc bullshit
-Rejecting or delaying small publishers or companies like LRG because they want to focus on who knows what when games release at a snail's pace already

I don't think anyone could argue with a straight face that Nintendo isn't the most anti-consumer of the game companies right now.

Fucking friend codes and no online game saves again!

I literally just introduced myself to the whole "friend-code" and their "online" system thing a few hours ago for the first time ever... after being on Xbox Live since just after the Beta days, I'm fucking baffled. If OG Xbox Live is considered archaic by todays standards, I'm not even sure what word would best be used to describe to rank this.

Games are good though.

Yep, Nintendo's decisions still baffle me. I was actually very surprised by how well received the Switch has been so far, I'm getting one for sure but I fucking hate the plethora of bad decisions surrounding the system.

You say Nintendo could have gone in several routes, all of which are worse than Amiibo. So how is offering Fusion mode as paid DLC any worse than locking it behind Amiibo?

You keep railing against the perceived DLC injustices brought upon us by the rest of the industry, but the truth is that the vast majority of DLC practices are fine. I don't know that much about loot boxes but I understand that they hold only cosmetic content. There is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of a season pass, beyond paying for something you don't know the quality of. I don't have an issue with Day 1 DLC because it is usually not exploitative (and ones that are are called out on forums and eviscerated) and made after work on the main game is done. I don't live in the US and so pre-order exclusives are not a thing where I live.

Most DLC is, as I've said, reasonably priced expansions to games. There is nothing inherently wrong with DLC. So again, how is Nintendo offering Fusion mode as paid DLC any worse than locking it behind Amiibo?

I'm not seeing how most of those things are anti-consumer; bad moves for sure, but not wilfully anti-consumer. Also I don't see how you can mention Nintendo's scarcity and LRG - a company which sells products you can only buy at a specific time on a specific date and pray you manage to snag a copy - in the same post with a straight face.

You're surprised that a good system is being positively received? It does exactly what it was advertised to do, came with a generational game and has some a novelty factor, why is this a surprise to you?

The thread you're in doesn't even have to do with the Switch.

I don't think anyone could argue with a straight face that Nintendo isn't the most anti-consumer of the game companies right now.

People need to stop using that phrase, they never use it correctly (especially on GAF). Also some of your points are utterly farcical.

Locking the only Hard Mode, which has been been a standard for Metroid for 15 years, behind an amiibo is bad, of course. Locking a slightly-harder-than-Hard-Mode behind an amiibo, while including the standard Hard Mode for everyone, is honestly ok. You'll get what you would have get if amiibo hadn't existed.
And that's assuming that Fusion Mode is slightly-harder and not exclusive mere reskin.

At the end of the days truth is, everyone is jumping to conclusions claiming that Metroid: Samus Returns Hard Mode is locked behind an amiibo. It's not. Fusion Mode is. We don't know what Fusion Mode is. We don't know if a standard Hard Mode is included. Before complaining we should wait for more information.

Games are good though.

It doesn't even make sense, because friend codes weren't on Wii U. And back in January, Reggie stated friend codes weren't a part of Switch. So, who the heck knows what happened.

I'm not really sure where this info is best posted. But for those interested, Newegg put up pre-orders for the Metroid Amiibo 2-pack. So here is a link to the listing.

Sorry to correct you, but we do know that Fusion Mode is the harder difficulty mode.

Funnily it's you who's jumping to conclusions by suggesting there's also an additional hard mode that's unlockable without an amiibo.

We know it's a hard mode. We don't know if it's the only hard mode.

And I'm not saying there is an additional hard mode. I'm saying there might be... as Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied it.
If Fusion Mode ends up being the only hard mode I'll complain like everybody else, but at the moment we don't know the details.

That's literally what the thread is about. It's funny how you and others say we should wait for more information yet you have your own presumptions about some other Hard mode which hasn't even been hinted at in the slightest, and again, in your hypothetical context would really be the middle difficulty level or "Normal" difficulty in any other game.

There might be cloud saves on Switch, there might be a browser and media apps on Switch, the online app might mix in game audio and voice chat, My Nintendo might be the Switch's achievement system, and now Metroid Samus Returns might have a separate hard mode in addition to the hard mode that's unlockable with the amiibo.

Time to get reasonable. You should have noticed the pattern: when Nintendo does not want to give a public statement on such questions, then there's simply nothing to announce.

The thread you're in doesn't even have to do with the Switch.
Yes, I was surprised because it felt like a lackluster console for me with the information we had back at launch, and it still does somewhat but I see the appeal and will definitely pick one up next year when its future is more clear. I hate some of the decisions made regarding the console, not gonna go into detail because that'd be derailing the thread, and I was simply following a point someone else made when I mentioned things surrounding the Switch as part of baffling decisions from Nintendo.

Yeah, the Switch can still feel lackluster for some of us, are we not allowed to feel this way?

I would definitely say the Switch is lackluster in online services and OS features that is a given.

I don't have any presumptions. I'm saying we don't know if a (amiibo-less) Hard Mode is included or not in the game. Therefore I'm suspending my judgement untill we know more. If Nintendo is indeed locking the only Hard Mode behind an amiibo I'll be the first to criticise them.
, and again, in your hypothetical context would really be the middle difficulty level or "Normal" difficulty in any other game
It wouldn't? If Nintendo re-released Metroid Fusion for 3DS adding a super-hard mode (and keeping the easy, normal and hard modes without changing anything), would the old hard mode become normal mode?
There might be cloud saves on Switch, there might be a browser and media apps on Switch, the online app might mix in game audio and voice chat, My Nintendo might be the Switch's achievement system, and now Metroid Samus Returns might have a separate hard mode in addition to the hard mode that's unlockable with the amiibo.

There is another pattern thought: Nintendo has never locked meaty content behind an amiibo. The only exception it comes to my mind is Chibi Robot 3DS, which was however sold with the amiibo at standard price (and it was a very bad game anyway). Star Fox Zero also locked the (only) hard mode behind Falco amiibo and guess what, you could unlock it anyway. And Nintendo didn't advertise that.

Umm, there's already a media app out in Japan and cloud saves are reportedly in development according to a reliable inside (Matt).

Just saying.
