NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Huh, last time I played jackal I only made it to the second boss. I guess my general nes game skills are lacking haha.
thanks man. i just took it slow and spammed the missile button.

update: i just resumed my game where i left off. (i left my console on for a week) made it to the last level and died at the boss. i continued and tried until my continues ran out.

again i died from an invisible bullet from a small soldier. either it's flickering bc of too many on screen things or it's not appearing on my BVM.

time to start over.

Just picked up a NES Advantage. I never owned one as a kid. Tested it out on Sky Shark. Holy crap! Not sure how I ever played this game without it.

The last level boss is about 5000x harder than anything else in the game from my experience.

You know, it's a really good controller, considering its vintage. It's a premium device - weighty, durable, well built. The stick isn't micro switched, but it works well. Extra touches like variable turbo and the ability to pass it between two players. And it looks fucking cool. Lots of shit peripherals were sold in those days, including from first parties (e.g. The Max and Power Glove).

dammit. i made it to the last boss just now in jackal and tried staying in the right most side of the board. and died by a laser trying to get near to the center... what do i do?

The final boss fight is two stages, the part with the gun turrets/building and then a big ass tank. When you get to the tank phase you can just go far right and do a diagonal shot/grenade on him when he is coming back your way. Just never go to far over so you are in the path of that flame of his main gun and avoid the regular bullets. It takes a while but hey it works.

thanks for the tips Flizzzipper, i guess i haven't reached the hard part of the boss yet.

Got a haul yesterday I'm very happy about... Got 27 games for just $80 and none of them are dupes. Got a couple less common games like the Bee 52 cart and picked up the first NES games I ever played, Fester's Quest. Terrible game, but nostalgia is a hell of a drug. Up to 100 NES titles now with 8 complete in box. On my way!

It was a Konami kinda day for me. I went to my favorite game store this morning and found these. Everything is mint and complete. Even the inserts and manuals are sleeved!

nice pickups! speaking of Konami, i need metal gear and Castlevania

i need to finish Jackal, been playing my psp go Zanac X Zanac all month that i haven't hooked up my nes. (don't have a scart switch) have a few more days before the month is over =P

i think Lothar is banned (checked back a few pages and saw his name), so that's why there's no updates... hopefully he's back soon...

Congrats on Jackal david.

I was too busy 1CCing some King of Fighters games on Level 8 that I forgot to check here about the latest game, well now I'm done with those, let's see what game is next.

Ah that explains it. Im basically only posting in retrogaf, as thats where all the cool people on gaf hang out, and there is almost never any heated arguments that lead to bans and such.

So this is the biggest retro game pickup I've ever gotten and I wanted to share it.

I'm really happy to finally have Little Samson in my collection, and this is also the last game I needed for a complete licensed US set
with the exception of Stadium Events

I'll have to try and post a pic of all my collectioin at some time, but I have to rearrange the house and make room for shelves big enough to hold ~700 NES games. Most of them are stashed away in boxes in a cabinet right now.

I've never played the game before today, its actually pretty darn good, too bad that can't be said for more of the expensive NES games.

I'll give you 20 bucks for it!

Kidding, congrats!

Wow that's a big get for sure. Congratulations!
Yeah a lot of rare games aren't actually that great but Little Samson is a top tier NES game. One of the best platformers on the system. I guess that contributes to the high price tag because it really is a must have game.

Looking forward to see your whole collection. :)

Thanks for the congrats guys, I needed to brag a little to counterbalance the buyer's remorse for spending so much on an old chunk of plastic lol.

Awesome. Nice work. I have a repro, one of only 2 or 3 in my otherwise all authentic collection of about 130+ carts. I don't know that I'll ever be able to snag a real one.

I'm really close to completing my main collecting goal: the CIB black box set. I just have Donkey Kong and Clu Clu Land to go. I'm not including DK Jr Math and Stack Up in my goal, however, because the games are just absolutely fucking stupid and the prices even stupider. I do own a DKJM cart. Might get Stack Up as a cart someday as well, but you must use ROB to play it and I have no interest in that....

I'm waaaay too late to this thread given that the Famicom is my favorite game system. Better late than never I suppose.

Do you guys know of any nice art books/coffee table books that cover Famicom games or Famicom box art, besides this one? I'm looking for something more comprehensive. I'm fine with other languages.

Ive been having some trouble getting games to run lately on my AV Famicom, nothing too serious, but sometimes they boot straight to a grey screen. So i figured it was time to clean it a bit, and yeah, how do you guys get down in those toploader pins to clean them?

Also, for some strange reason my Famicom Disc System on the other hand is super unreliable when it comes to this - even though Ive cleaned it really well. I guess it makes sense the Famicom itself is the culprit, so yeah, need a way to clean it i guess. Any tips?

for top down pins, i use a thin plastic like a thin ID card, wrapped a cloth or side of clean cotton t-shirt, dip it in Isopropyl Alcohol 70% and insert like a cart and remove a few times carefully, it gets out a lot of dirt. (just use the right thickness card.)

I've had this book saved under my want list for a while now. You'll need to know some Japanese however.

Otherwise, off the top of my head, there's Pat Contri's Ultimate Guide to the NES and Hardcore Gaming 101 is coming out with a FDS Guidebook later this year.

http://www.chrismcovell.com/famicomplete.html I've owned this one for about 10+ years now, it's a nice conversation piece even though it's in Japanese.

This is the one you want:

tumblr_inline_nq9rtmgeeI1t39hlb_1280.jpg

Family Computer 1983 - 1994 by the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography

It has photographs of every Famicom game box, as well as interviews with the usual gang like Miyamoto and Itoi, but surprisingly has an introduction by the late old man himself, Hiroshi Yamauchi, and it's bilingual in Japanese and English, which makes it extra desirable.

This is what I do, but I use the highest percent Isopropyl I can get which is usually in the 90s.

Hi, I just bought a AV Famicom that got here in the States pretty quickly that came with everything and even came with the Japanese SMB1 cart along with Nintendo Switch magazines that weren't even listed in the order. Very nice! However, like the idiot I am, I forgot all about the power supply lol.

However, I do got a 9V AC universal power supply that I am currently using with my Sega Genesis Model 1. I know that the AV Famicom uses DC power and that the official one runs at 10V. Would I be risking anything if I tried to use this power supply on the AV Famicom? It's an Enercell.
