Favorite video game genre names?

Hi GAF...was wondering what are your favorite video game genre name/s? Optionally, you may explain why you like it/them.

Mine is very easily, survival horror. I like the way the words look when typed out/written down, the letters that make them up...the way it sounds when you say it out loud...how accurately it describes the what I consider great games in the genre

edit: I also like MMORPG for some reason...saying every letter of it out loud is satisfying for me

So many great ones imo! I'm quoting the ones I feel are great, and might add some commentary for some

"High Speed Robot Action"

Though only used by Zone of the Enders I just love it.

BATTLE ROYALE

o_o that's a genre? Thought that was only a multiplayer mode

Side-Scrolling Platform Action-Adventure Video Game

Metroidvania ^_^

Metroidvania ^_^

That one is pretty great imo

"Bullet hell" perfectly sums up what you'll be dealing with and in what quantity.

Yup

Tactical espionage action.

Another poster mentioned this one already, but still cool :p

Masocore.

Never heard/seen of this before, and looked it up...it's pretty interesting to me haha. For some reason, they remind me of rougelikes...I guess because both genres are widely considered to be difficult, much more than the average game

Stylish hard action.

Stylish HARD action? Whazzat?

Doom clone

Haha XD shooters modelled after Doom are very distinct from later FPS games imo, and deserve to at least be classified as their own subgenre I feel...and yet, the term "Doom clone" sounds kind of...offensive...I can't think of a better one as of now, perhaps like "90s FPS" or something...I dunno

Character action.

I think it's good to differentiate action games that demand intimate knowledge of combat mechanics and mastery, from the rest of the relatively mindless "hack n slash" genre. "Character action" isn't the best term but it seems to stick, so I'll take what I can get.

Soulsbourne and Rogue Lite, honestly because both tend to piss of people to some extent. I love both the genres and their names.

Immersive Sim

Mainly because without having someone explain it to you, there's no way of knowing what the hell constitutes a game in the genre.

I pretty much agree!

For DMC series, I think it's best to use "stylish action" for it...and for Bayonetta series, "climax action" (as described once on PlatinumGames blog) and for The Wonderful 101, "unite action" (as described once on PlatinumGames blog), but I feel any of these games, along with most of PlatinumGames' output can be accurately described overall as "character action"

mumorpurger

Whazzat?

LMAO

yea...I tend to like genre names that piss people off as well XD

Shmup is the most fun to say.

Although that's your opinion, I agree

NESpowerhouse

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
Full Reaction Eyes Entertainment

That's what Shenmue is.

Beat em up.

I know exactly what I'm getting into. Lol

Yup, simple and straight to the point I feel

Immersive Sim

Mainly because without having someone explain it to you, there's no way of knowing what the hell constitutes a game in the genre.

Aren't most genres like that, video game or otherwise? Like how would you know what a Rougelike game is without having someone to explain it to you for example? Besides, regardless of whenether I need someone to explain it to me or not, I find Immersive Sim to be a a cool genre name

I never thought survival horror was that great until I saw a black screen with white text at the bottom that said

Enter the Survival Horror.

Seeing "Enter the Survival Horror" on that black and white screen...so, SO good imo. ESPECIALLY in a game/games (RE 96 and it's REmake) that imo are the PERFECT representations of the genre overall...perhaps I should add this to the OP

I disagree with that first part, most genres pretty much tell you exactly what you're gonna be doing, i.e. survival horror, First Person Shooter, Real Time Strategy, Action , even slightly more vague ones like "Bullet Hell" give you some idea. You can have played an immersive sim and not know you have unless someone tells you, where as even with a rougelike, it's a game like Rogue, so if you've played Rogue, you know what you're getting into.
