New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

I made the mistake of buying a bunch of games when I started the hobby and now they just sit. Now I force myself to only buy a game at a time to try and spread them out and give myself enough time to actually play them. =)

Same problem here, though my issue is I bought a lot of games that require a 5+ player count and it's hard to get a group that big together outside of going to a store and convincing people to play a "party game classic" with a large group is difficult.

Yup. I'm very selective now. Also since I moved I've pretty much had to stick to games that play well with two.

Likewise. I had a burst of buying a bunch of games again around Christmas last year, since I had slacked off for a bit. Now, my wishlist is really small and is pretty much only new releases and keeping up with Arkham:LCG.

I'm still in the mentality I had when I started getting heavy into board games, and it's been difficult to break. Before the board game renaissance, if something seemed interesting, you bought it when you saw it because you didn't know if it would ever get a reprint or end up costing you 4x the price if you waited. It's nowhere near as problematic anymore, but I still do the same thing I did back then.

When I got into board gaming, I approached it like I do all my other hobbies and collections.

Let's take movies/music as an example.

-Identify favorites

-Get classics

-Identify missing genres and fill gaps

-Complete series/discographies

-Once you own everything older and available you wanted, keep up on current releases

This always seems to be my plan of attack, no matter the hobby. I've done this with board games, video games, movies, music, lego, 40k, and a handful of other collections. This means I tend to be pretty exhaustive in my research and each collection shows depth and knowledge of the chosen subject.

My problem was that went from competitive tabletop gaming in the form of heroclix to board games so everything seemed super cheap in comparison but I bought a lot of stuff that was similar to what I was playing before and my wife just doesn't like super competitive 1 on 1 stuff. I may never play war of the Ring.

I'm the same way, the problem with board games is if I pay extra for an oop game that requires 4-8 to play or a game with a theme nobody I know wants to play I just have something expensive on my shelf and it kills me to not be able to play it.

Just put in a big order for some LotR stuff, plus got Black Riders so I can finally start playing the saga campaign.

Ive been looking at a ton of solo play games and realized I have a hard time getting into ones that include miniatures or grids. The closer to 85% card only based and up games I tend to be more into.

Because of this I've been heavily considering Arkahm more and Mage Knight less... But I'm not really into what I hear of Arkham only really being fun the first time you play each story (ie low replay value)

I would say Mage Knight is far more Euro than a typical miniatures game.

I've been having a rest from the Board game scene but just got my copy of Nemos war, a great solo game and it looks like I'm right back into the hobby.

Yeah I honestly don't think I've played a euro board game yet, but video games of similar nature never really grabbed me. I do feel a board game would hold my attention better though.

I actually just played Mage Knight for the first time last night. It reminds me a lot of games like Might and Magic or Endless Legend.

I feel like, though euro games always seem a little dry, the good ones hold up over more plays.. You could play them time and time and time again and still have a great time. Ticket to Ride, Catan, etc. Feel more like traditional games that might be a bit boring... But while they aren't as exciting on the outset as say, a dungeon crawl, or an explosive game based on a movie license, they have the design that makes you bring them back to the table.

That said, I really don't have too many euro style games myself. I tend to give into impulse and buy what seems most exciting... like DOOM or Big Trouble Little China, or things with aliens, etc. Hm...

I took the new Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective print to game night and got a 5-player game in. Some people did seem turned off by it being nothing but reading (the host mentioned that it sounded like a good dinner party game, so hopefully that wasn't a subtle way of warning me against bringing it again). However, aside from 1 early departure who was drinking and said they weren't in the right frame of mind, I think the remaining 5 of us were pretty engaged the entire game.

It was really neat seeing everyone pouring over notes, newspapers, the map, and the directories. I also really liked the logical chain of deduction at the end of case 2 when Holmes only uses a tiny amount of leads and we used like 30.

Very mild case 2 spoiler highlights of our night:
Someone looking up a doctor in the directory, choosing to visit them, and finding nothing but a note saying that the doctor was at his office during the day because we visited their HOME. They were like, "...well, that actually makes sense." We could just imagine Holmes shaking his head with disappointment. The next time that player checked for a business, and there wasn't one. Then later there was ANOTHER situation but they missed the business in the directory, and we again showed up at someone's house, and once again they were hilariously at work and we wasted a trip.

Investigating a murder, being lost, finally discovering a clue, going to talk to a contact, and discovering THEY had also been murdered just before we got there.

The host of my weekly game nights just had a baby, so I'll probably only be gaming with my wife and daughter for a number of weeks. I'm hoping to move soon if I get lucky and get the job I want, to a town in California even smaller than the one I live in now in South Carolina, but I looked at MeetUp and it seems like there are some big game groups in nearby towns. So I might be waiting a while before I can play anything serious or complex.

Skip Arkham. Get Eldritch Horror instead. Same coop Cthulhu goodness with half of the fiddly bullshit.

Other note: anyone here futched with the coop expansion to Runebound 3rd?

I've played most scenarios 3-4 times so far, and haven't felt that they've become any less fun. Running with different investigators and decks and trying to get different resolutions to how the story plays out is still very fun.

Even though Arkham:LCG has some persnickity scenario-specific rules that are easy to miss, I find it to be a much more fun and rewarding experience than Eldritch. I still enjoy Eldritch, from the few times I've played, but I don't get a huge narrative experience out of it, and it feels as if there's not a lot of strategy involved.

Fuck Space Hulk: Death Angel. >:| I was doing so well and got to the last location then death spiral.

Haha! I don't know how many times I've died in that game after thinking "Man, I think I might actually win this one!". Just like what often happens in the board game, when things go bad they go really bad. The house of cards can fall pretty quickly. I always feel like I truly earn the wins.

My B. I thought he was talking about AH boardgame, not LCG.

With how luck dependent the game is I rarely feel like I earn my wins or losses. I really like the game except for the low chance of success.

What town are you currently living in in South Carolina? I used to live there, so I'm curious. Where I lived, Sumter, had a really tiny gaming scene based mostly around Magic when I was there.

So is Descent 2nd edition main game like out of print or something? I can only seem to find it pretty expensive online...

I don't want to just jump and grab one and then a week later they are back in stock selling for 65 bucks or something

Sumter.
The MtG scene is still the only real scene. When I drive past Ray's on a Friday night, the parking lot is completely filled for Friday Night Magic and every prerelease still draws a ton of people. The RPG group that meets there does well on numbers too I think. Board gaming in-store died last year when the people who were kind of the 'leaders' of the group had a new semester of school start up though. A guy moved here at the beginning of the year and stopped in at Ray's looking to play some games. This was one of the times I went in for weekly game night and sat there for an hour waiting to see if anyone would turn up. He is who eventually started the game night I go to now, because he couldn't get behind the whole "the store has a game night every week, but it closes at 8pm every night but Friday" thing, so he started hosting. But like I said, he's got a two-day old baby at this point, so he's out of the mix for a bit. There is another guy in town who started a Gaming and RPG Facebook group that has grown kind of big, but he had had some medical stuff going on lately and also has a lot of time being taken up by a game he is designing and trying to get published. His main interest is RPGs though. For X-Wing and Armada, I drive to Ready to Play and Firefly in Columbia.

We played Wasteland Express yesterday. The components and inserts are amazing and while we did enjoy the game I have to agree with Shut Up and Sit Down that adding those objectives sort of ruin the fun of the game. I definitely like it more than SU&SD and didn't find it to be as terrible but that said I still would prefer playing Merchants of Venus over this.

Ha! That's pretty crazy that you're in Sumter. I grew up there. 19 years. Yah, the store I went to doesn't even exist anymore, and I've not heard of Ray's. In any case, I don't understand gaming stores that close that early. The ones here (Champaign, IL) open in the afternoon so they stay open until later.

Going to Columbia was generally a bit of a slog, depending on where you were going. I don't recall either of the ones you mentioned. There was a gaming and comic shop I gamed at a lot for the short time I lived in West Columbia that was nice, but I don't remember the name of the place.

Anyway, my brother in law in Sumter would definitely be interested in a board gaming group, and my sister probably would too. I'll shoot them a message and then send you a PM.

No shit. You are from Sumter and are in Champaign, IL right now? I'm only a transplant, been here almost a decade after getting stationed here when I was still enlisted. A guy from here though, he grew up here, just moved to Champaign, IL about two or three weeks ago. He was in the X-Wing group here and will probably be hanging around stores playing that there. He said when he flew out to look for a place to live, that there is an awesome gaming store like within a block's walking distance or something from the apartment he was gonna move into.
Small world...

Yeah, Ray's is right by the main gate. He's been open for a few years, I guess. I flew home from where I was working in Greenland one year and was looking for an issue of White Dwarf for the exclusive Space Hulk 4E missions. I looked on the authorized GW sellers page and saw him listed. You would think that being right next to the base would mean a ton of traffic; the Air Force has a ton of nerds in it. And when the 3rd Army showed up? More people right there by his shop, driving past it all the time. But he only draws some in for MtG and selling comics, I guess. One of the people last year who did game night weekly at Ray's but stopped going because of classes said that there was a massive game group registered on the campus (the USC satellite campus or whatever it is) in town, that they had a large membership and an officially sanctioned gaming club. He said that they constantly sat around in their game room on campus and complained "There's nothing to do in Sumter, we're so bored all the time!" and he would say "You guys know I'm at Ray's all the time, people play games there a lot. It's not a far drive at all for a lot of you." But none of them ever showed up and he said he was going to resign as whatever role he had in the club.

I don't know how long Firefly and RtP have been around. Firefly is somewhat close to Lexington and the Columbiana Mall area and has been around since at least 2014 when I got into tabletop gaming. RtP is really close to the university in Cayce, right over one of the bridges from the school and downtown and the arena. So they get a good number of people for all kinds of game nights during the week, for MtG or WarmaHordes or Star Wars stuff, but I can't be driving an hour to either one of those stores for a game night in the middle of the week that would see me getting back home early in the AM. Both are good stores though. A store just opened up in Florence recently too, last month. Same problem there though, it's an hour drive. The guys from Florence who post in the SouthEast regional sub-forum on BGG needed a place to game badly though, so it's good they have one there now.

If you want, you can pass along to your sister and brother-in-law the FB group "Gamecock City Adventurers." The leader/creator of the group is the RPG fan that I mentioned who has been sick and is also working on his own game. The guy who just had a kid creates events on there whenever he does host one too. I can't host in my tiny apartment but I tend to post pics of what I'm playing with my wife and daughter or what I just bought. There are a couple dozen members on there though and I'm sure a few of them would be down to meet anywhere and play something. One of the Air Force guys in the group is available to play every other week (he plays in the group with me that is postponed because of the host's newborn though, so he won't be playing soon either) and he asks every now and then on there if people wanna get games in. I couple I know who stopped attending the group a few months back were willing to host at their place and want to game all the time I guess.
There's also a Sumter X-Wing group, and then a Game Night group that is affiliated with Ray's from the game nights there last year but sees no traffic. I've checked MeetUp a few times but Charleston is the closest place that has game groups on there.

So Fallout is up for pre-order at CSI. I did something I never thought I'd do and placed a pre-order for it. I figure worst case (game sucks/I don't like what I see), I can either cancel OR sell it to someone who misses out. I suspect this game will be quite tough to get a hold of at release.

Don't see the issue, you ok with kickstarting games right? It's no different.

I'm not a fan of Dead of Winter. It does a lot of things right, but having a 1 in 12 chance of instantly dying whenever you move or fight feels really dumb.

Pandemic Legacy and Scythe are both amazing games. I'd recommend getting those 2, unless you've already come close to finishing Pandemic Legacy before.
[DEAD OF WINTER] ouch wasn't aware.. i just saw the game being played, but i'm not a fan of "every turn you can die because you know.. random" :X
i guess i'll go with pandemic legacy and scythe..
pandemic legacy is getting a reprint in september and amodee has also advertised season2 for september, so i've ordered both :p
scythe, i'll see whether to get the italian version or the english one...

ehhh ..
iirc they are slated for reprint by ffg shortly (nerkhall//chains the rust and core descent 2nd ed) so you might want to wait a bit..
depends on you i assume :)

FFG is killing me going into Gen Con this year. So many games to check out. Flying out Wednesday, can't wait to see some of this stuff in person hopefully.

Sid Meier's Civilization: A New Dawn is a strategy board game in which two to four players act as the rulers of history's most memorable empires. Over the course of the game, players will expand their domains, gain new technologies, and build many of humanity's greatest wonders. In the end, one nation will rise above all others to leave its indelible mark upon history.

This new game presents players with an undiscovered country to conquer, built from beautifully illustrated map tiles. These would-be conquerors construct and populate the map with barbarians, natural resources, and city-states, then formulate their plans for how they will shape this world to their vision. Their exact goals, however, change with each game. Agendas are detailed on victory cards, three of which are drawn during set up. Players race to become the first to accomplish one agenda on each of these victory cards, spreading throughout the world and ensuring their civilization's place as the greatest world power.

I'll play devils advocate and say it's not as bad as it looks on paper. It doesn't mean you're out of the game and you're still controlling other people. I find it way more forgiving than the constant shit-wrecking the pandemic deck serves out every players turn.

If that new Civ game doesn't take 4 hours to play, and especially if it works with 2 players without requiring tons of military focus and player attacking, I'm quite interested. Those were the factors that kept me from getting the old Civilization / Through the Ages games.

Could someone please post when preorders go up in the U.S. in case I miss it?

Yeah, I decided I can certainly wait.

In the meantime, anyone have a suggestion of a particularly good expansion that should be gotten for it?

Probably not a good time to be buying games, since I was just talking about my lack of gaming partners for the next few weeks. I'm *this* close to driving an hour to the nearest Target to buy Sonar though. I want to wait for someone to post a review or something, since it's been available for a few days now. I've just got too much hype for it though; my Captain Sonar hype has bled over to this and compounded to form a ball of mega-hype. So I'll more than likely wind up driving there and buying it, only for it to get tossed into the garage for a while. I don't think it's the type of game my wife and daughter would want to try, and that would still only make three of us, so I'd have to run my sub by myself.

I'd very much recommend against Captain Sonar unless it's the new small-player-count version (is that out yet?) or unless you're very likely to have 6-8 people who want to play it several times.

It was sort of interesting the one or two times we got it played in an 8-person group, but even so it's janky and some roles kind of suck.

I didn't really mind the military aspect of Civ, as it's primarily about land-grabbing rather than all out wars, but it is an aspect of the game that was really bloated and fiddly.

Anyone interested in buying my Dark Souls Board Game kickstarter Wave 2 pledge?

Wave 2 includes everything except the base game, expansions and stretch goals.
All of this ships together in October. Some of these aren't coming to retail for another 11 months as they're putting them out month to month over the course of the next year.

Here's what I've got:

Mega Boss Expansions - The Four Kings
Qty: 1 x £28.00
Mega Boss Expansions - Vordt of the Boreal Valley
Qty: 1 x £28.00
Double Sided Gaming Tiles
Qty: 1 x £15.00
Darkroot Basin Expansion
Qty: 1 x £35.00
Mega Boss Expansions - Asylum Demon
Qty: 1 x £28.00
Mega Boss Expansions - The Guardian Dragon
Qty: 1 x £28.00
Mega Boss Expansions - Black Dragon Kalameet
Qty: 1 x £28.00
Mega Boss Expansions - The Gaping Dragon
Qty: 1 x £28.00

+ All Stretch Goals

It amounts to about $310 (including their flat rare shipping [£24]). Only can ship to US.

It's quite a lot of tiles, cards, and plastic and I probably should be spending this on diapers instead.

That's the one I'm wanting to get, Sonar (the four player version). I've put off getting Captain Sonar this long because of the player count. I mean, I buy all kinds of games I know I can't play, but that one, I KNOW I can't get to the table. It's one of the few times I've overrid my compulsive buying and actually listened to some of the advice in this thread. It must have been towards the end of last year when I finally looked into the game and decided I wanted it, and several posters (you might have been one of them even) cautioned me from getting it if I didn't have 7 other interested people.

nerkhall!
i would leave trollfen and lair of the wyrm as the last xpacs..
wyrm adds some nice stuff, but lacks "content"..
trollfen is just okaysh..

i have played too little of mists and chains xpac to give you a good opinion...
unfortunately i have played one night subbing in for a mate that could not join during a campaign using chains that rust..
and i just saw (not even played) some guys playing mists :/
thus i don't have a clear knowlege of what they bring to the table for mechanics..

nerkhall though i'd suggest as first xpac regardless of anything :)
also, i'd pick ires of nature (or something like this), it's a pod you can play master-less :p
ALSO!
if you want to play the standard campaign without anyone being fully assigned to master (technically you can use the app, but the app allows you to play "different" adventure, not the scenarios that come bundled with the xpac) you can try redjack variant (editer automated monster or automated overlord.. i prefer the latter but to each his own..)
