NPD Sales Results for July 2017

A better seller? Yes... sold more, build the franchise, etc.

More revenue or profit? Probably not.

Actually Mat, are there noticeable trends that when a game goes into heavy price drops before the next one in the franchise comes out, it has a positive effect on launch sales for the next game? "Building the franchise" doesn't sound like something that happens because one game drops in price and sells a bit more.

PS4 and Switch are both having excellent years and lots of variety in the top selling software this month. Nice to see.

I'm around if people have questions.

Any thoughts on Fate/Extella on Switch's performance? As I said, it came out on the 25th and so it only had a few days of tracking, that should be a good sign for it, no?

Also what days are tracked for this month? I believe some NPD's track a couple days into the new month don't they?

Miitopia > Hey Pikmin. Not too surprising, but it confirms once again that Miis still have some strength left in them. Splatoon taking the crown is expected, even without digital. I'm surprised Zelda is still holding above Mario Kart. The latter is supposed to be the evergreen title, but Zelda refuses to budge. I can't help but laugh at 3 Call of Dutys in the top 20. Siege above Wildlands is impressive.

GTA V is such a monster, has stayed in the top 10 games (often top 5) since it launched in 2013...

Has any other game held this position for so long??

I'm not an expert but in my gaming habits if I got a cheaper game before the sequel launch and I like it I probably will buy the sequel.

I really like when before the release of the sequel the previous games receive deals or remaster versions.

Hell I bought the entry MGS franchise just to play MGS4 (I just played the first game when I got a PS3).

Tracking behind Cars 3 is not a good sign at all.

Tracked until July 29.

Remind me so we can discuss in a few days? This is a bigger question I have thoughts around and would like to get your take on when the thread quiets down.

The tracking period this month was Jul 2 through Jul 29. And sure, if a game charts with only a couple days it generally means good things.

Remasters are one thing, as those get their own marketing and promotions, but a game that has already launched and then receives price promotions?

Like, when the next DMC releases, I don't see it doing anything amazing because +1M got DmC for cheap.

Sounds good.

i dont even like GTA but how the fuck is GTAV an "outdated" product? what the hell

Well, if you'd have played the online, you'd know for yourself. Aside from lobby play, the missions and structure of the online are pretty awful by today's standards. I'm amazed people are so inclined to buy it still too.

Is this the first month Horizon hasn't been in the top 10 since launch? It had a good run. Game deserves the success.

Correct. I'm referring however to broad scope numbers. Hardware, Software, and accessory numbers all up is great

Ah yea fair enough then. But with NSW being the succes it has been it'd be kind of difficult not to be up YoY wouldn't it? I mean look at the new platforms figures and compare them to the WiiU and you basically have a landslide.

I dunno, honestly I'd surprised if Cars 3 didn't do at least pretty decently. Is the game poop? Absolutely. But that never stopped movie tie-in games before.

It did really bad on PAL markets, here it wouldn't be different.
Cars 3 was included in last month NPD aa new launch and only appeared on Switch chart on 7th position.
Fate doing worse than Cars 3 on its second month must be really low numbers.

This persistent incorrect rumor about hardware performance is annoying.

No portable system ranked in the top 3 best-selling hardware platforms in the month.

Uhh have you been paying attention to how it's been selling thus far this year? Why on earth would this month be any different?

It hasn't sold PS4 numbers but I mean you're implying it's a sinking ship when I think people need to take a step back and understand what's going on. This isn't the WiiU after all. The system needs some good first party performers but it's not like it's imploding. Step outside the echo chamber for a bit.

It really is great to see switch not affecting PS4 numbers at all. People understand they are a good combo.
.

Indeed if I have to take a guess than most Switch owners owns a PS4 as their primary console as well.

PS4 + Switch is the best combo to have for this gen imo, it covers most of the "big" stuff.

One of the most frequent questions in a game (OT, Review, etc) thread is "Do I need to play the first game before play the sequel?"... so some gamers just enters in the franchise if they can buy the previous games at cheaper prices.

I did that with a lot of games: MGSIV, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, etc... some games I even bought the sequel together with the previous cheaper game. That is my point... cheaper games near the launch of a sequel can make more gamers enter in the franchise.

I'm sure a lot of gamers brought Uncharted to play before the sequel after see all these 100 reviews of Uncharted 2.

Not really conventional wisdom would be both PS4 and Xbone hardware should be down YoY at this point in their life cycle. Xbox is but PS4 has been so strong this year it's really helping.

Obviously Switch is a huge growth factor though as well

Waiting for Nintendo to drop Mario later this year.

The fight for GOTY and consumer's money.

This new revenue chart better be ready for the multiple $59 games that will be sold.

Can you give us some general info on how Xbox is doing this year? It's been so long since MS has given real numbers that people are assuming the worst.

XB1 is probably around 120-130k... my bet.

We have data up to June 2017 for NPD... 989k units... down YoY.

It's down YoY through August, that much at least is certain. So no matter what it's not good news (though not as dire this month as things originally looked)

Zelda is about to be like GTAV for the rest of the year, every time somebody buys a Switch they will buy Zelda, so I expect it to chart all year

But that seems to be the newer game already generating interest in the franchise rather than the cheaper games being the reason for it.

With MGS, my first was 4. I loved it enough to when V was coming out, I bought the MGS collection on 360 and MGS1 on PS3.

Having a back catalogue is important for that reason but more for the reason of continued revenue streams from successful new launches.

I'm pleased to see Crash and even FFXII in the Top 5. I was surprised by the latter.

It's also nice to hear about the great year for RPGs. It's one of my favorite genres, but interest in it routinely gets cast as a sign of disturbance by the broader culture (basement-dwelling nerd stereotype).
