Doesn't seem like they'll have it on Steam though since there's still no pre-order there

From the announcement on Steam:
Lastly, adventurers will be able to pre-purchase and preload Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA starting from September 5 through September 12. And during the pre-purchase period, we'll also be doing giveaways for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA!

Oh when was that announced? I completely missed it
Wish it was a bit sooner so I could see the price and help decide between getting this or Ys SEVEN

Noon today, I think--I think I'm following the official group on Steam. I'm going with this first, and I'll get Seven later. VIII's probably going to be a full 60 dollars, so if it's between a game I already have on PSP and a brand new one, I'm going with the brand new one.

Seven is totally worth a buy, though. It's a good game. It's probably going to be a sale buy for me.

Oh I'm sure the US price will be $60 like the PS4 version but I'm not sure about the regional price, could be anywhere from R$105 to R$200
If it's the former I'd be tempted by it, if it's closer to the latter I'll get it on a big sale

I was sure on Ys SEVEN when I thought it'd be $15~20 but now it's $25 I'm reconsidering it

So the Steam store page for Ys VIII says that there will be some DLC free for a week after release. Will it cost money after the week is up, or will it be removed from the store?

I think the dub will be fine. Even cold steel sounded pretty terrible in the trailers, but the end result was probably one of my favorite examples of good dubbing in localization.

What worries me is the direction, especially for Dana. While her voice is fitting, almost all we've heard of her so far sounds both flat and like her VA is constantly straining herself. They've also mispronounced Laxia's name in a previous trailer, so that's a bit concerning as well. The lack of transparency compared to stuff like this (especially this) from Hatsuu at XSEED doesn't do much to inspire confidence, although NISA doesn't normally do that kind of stuff anyway. I just don't get the impression they're putting quite as much thought into it, even if the VAs themselves are good and fitting choices. (though it does seem like they didn't get Dogi's VA back from Seven)

Those are far from my only grievances with NISA's handling of the localization effort so far. In fact, we learned a whole lot of stuff yesterday alone that bothers me, and some of it seems to strongly suggest that they are supplementing their translations with Google Translate.

1) The name of a beach area in the JP version is "Cape of White Sands", already written in English. NISA's version is "White Sand Cape", which actually sounds less natural. Just leaving the original name as is would've been better.

2) They translated "zoom" (as in the camera function) as "scaling". This is the result Google Translate gives. (Also didn't capitalize "movement".)

3) They used <these> as quotes. Just reeks of sloppiness seeing as how these are acceptable in Japanese, but simply not used this way in English.

4) This boss's title is mistranslated. What they have here is, like the camera thing, the result you get when you plug the JP title (異形の獣) into Google Translate. It should be something along the lines of "bizarre", "grotesque" or "fantastic" beast, not "variant".

5) They translated what is normally translated as something like "item drop rate +" as "obtained items +". This one's comparatively minor, but still slightly sloppy, again. There's also the case of the armor being described as being made from "beast's bones", rather than "a beast's bones" or "beasts' bones". (Like Demon's Souls?) The aforementioned camera thing is also shown in the corner.

One of these in a vacuum wouldn't necessarily be the end of the world, but all of them together, plus past stuff, show that the E3 demo build's craptacular translation wasn't just an isolated incident that's completely, 100% divorced from the quality of the final product. And NISA hardly has the best track record with these kinds of screwups. Even now, they're working on localizing Danganronpa V3 by having four teams of one translator and editor each working to translate and edit specific characters' dialogue, which is an utterly ludicrous and insane idea, as anyone who's worked in localization can tell you.

I want it to be good, but at this point, there are so many indications that it's going to be, at the very least, a bit rough around the edges. Ys VIII is one of the best games I've played in years, and it deserves better than just that.

Oh, also, NISA confirmed in a tweet that the Vita steelbook holds a PS4 disc, not a Vita cartridge.

How is Ys Seven difficulty wise compared to Origin and Felghana?
I usually play Ys games on Normal the first time and then do a second playthrough on Nightmare, but I'm thinking of just going straight to Nightmare this time, unless it's going to be a major pain in the ass.

Significantly easier. Give Nightmare a try and see how it goes.

Do a bit of the crafting and Nightmare isnt too bad

So the porting team not only managed to get the work done faster than expected, but it also ended up being damn good from the very first build...

This leaves me pretty hopeful for future PC ports of PSP games. With XSeed bringing in talented people, at least porting to PC doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. Now, to get over the barrier that is the localisation, on the other hand...

Hyde doing Gurumin 3D (in Japan), and now Ys Seven PC, tells me they're genuinely interested in working on Falcom games. I hope XSEED keeps to their word and contracts them again for Brandish: The Dark Revenant and Celceta, or maybe even Nayuta or Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki if those dream projects happen.

Looks like someone got a copy of Ys VIII (eng) early and is live-streaming right now:
https://twitter.com/Scatigno1/status/898989762585006081

So far, the localization looks to definitely be a bit of a step down from XSEED's work on past games in fluidity of dialogue and VA direction, with the absolute worst line being "In a strangely curious way, I find myself interested to meet her". There's also the incessant use of <these> or <<these>> brackets wherever the Japanese version had something similar - even in dialogue - which is just not something that is used in English and is not normally preserved in localizations. They also misromanized "Isios Blade" (which is supposed to be Greek) as "Isis Blade", and the word "variant" is awkwardly and incorrectly used in a boss's title and in dialogue to mean "unusual". One playable character's name is also consistently mispronounced. This is all from the first two hours.

They did fix some errors from earlier builds, like the machine-translated character descriptions and camera functions. (Although machine translation also seems to be how they got "variant beast", and they left that in and even defended it on Twitter.)

I was wary of NISA getting Ys VIII right from the announcement, and it seems I was justified.

I finally beat Origin tonight with all three characters. I'm going to see if I can play through Ark before 7 releases, and then hit that and VIII as they come out. That's a lot of Ys, obviously.

My ranking of the games I've played so far is II>Origin>Oath>I. I love all of them, though. But Ys II just hit me on a level like few games ever had before. I don't know when the next time I'll come along a game that hits me on that level is.

Looking forward to all the ones I've haven't played yet, though.

Geez, they're actually using the advice I gave them on their forums about marketing? I don't see Hatsuu doing these countdowns, and the far-out release date was already a sign. So that's an improvement.

If you enjoy II, you should try Dawn of Ys on PC Engine eventually. It uses the same gameplay systems and is almost as good as II.

I feel ya there, I freaking love 2 also. Though it's my 3rd place game but not by much.

Seven>Origin>2 for me

Also good luck going into Ark last after oath and origin :p

Maybe I'll check that out someday. I've just been playing the Falcom releases so far, but I'd like to play some of the other ones somewhere down the road.

Yeah, I know that Ark's system is less polished compared to Oath and Origin, so it's probably not the ideal order to play them, but it's just kind of the way it happened. I'll try not to be too hard on it for that.

RPG Site review of Ys Seven

The PC port of Ys Seven is not going to offer the level of enhancements as you may have seen in the recently released Trails of Cold Steel for PC, but the job done here in taking a PSP game to PC is more-than-adequate. Most importantly, the game now features a 60 FPS frame-rate and much higher resolutions. There are also toggles for texture level, texture smoothing, V-Sync, FXAA anti-aliasing, and a borderless window display option.

Being originally a PSP game, character models and environment textures are not going to be exceptionally detailed. The game's bright color palette does help a bit in producing a vibrant and inviting image quality, but this is still a PSP game at the core. However, the game's 2D character art and UI elements have been upscaled nicely to PC resolutions. Load times between game screens are also nearly instantaneous, and saving or loading games also takes no time at all.

The port also seems to be well optimized. Not only can you play up to 4K resolutions on a high-end GPU, but I was able to play on a several-years-old Nvidia laptop GPU with highest texture settings and keep a 60 FPS frame-rate at 1080p most of the time. A couple areas or certain boss encounters in the game are a bit more resource intensive and did require bumping down textures or resolution to keep a steady frame-rate, but nonetheless, Ys Seven should be playable on most any setup.
The PC port features controller support, and I used an Xbox 360 gamepad during my playthrough of the game. Compared to the original PSP version, the most notable difference is the addition of an extra pair of shoulder buttons. This allows character switching to be moved from a face button, which is now dedicated to the special "Extra" super skill. Ultimately this makes character switching, skill use, guarding, and using the Extra skill a bit more simple than it was on PSP. The gamepad configuration is also largely customizable if you aren't a fan of the default placements. The game also features a fully mappable keyboard control as well, but I did not test these out.

The interesting bits.

Indeed, the extra shoulder buttons will be a big help. I still plan on remapping buttons on my Steam controller as I see fit once I buy the game.

Kotaku Ys VIII review is up: http://kotaku.com/ys-viii-lacrimosa-of-dana-the-kotaku-review-1798552332

Satisfying combat and wonderful music are Ys’ bread and butter. the basic components that have carried the series through multiple sequels and remakes over the past three decades. The stories haven’t been strong, but when they’re just a place to hang our hat while jamming and stabbing, it’s not a big deal.

Hell, we might have been better off. By adding an enthralling tale packed with rich, engaging characters and an ever-looming man-versus-nature conflict, Nihon Falcom has crafted a game that’s incredibly hard to put down. There are no real “Everything’s okay now, we can rest” moments in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. The struggle isn’t over until everyone escapes the island

Adols final journal entry is about him having to give up adventuring because no one would sell or give him a ride on a boat.
Ys VIII (or, uh, VI) would probably be perfect end caps in that they'd be adventures where he not only gets himself wrecked, but drags everyone else with him.

Yeah, but he got a boat ride into 7 and it actually lands on shore properly :D

The fact 8 takes place before 6 makes the start of 6 even funnier.

Let's go! AH FUCK..... ok that's done... LETS GO! AAHHHH FUCK NOT AGAIN
