New 3DS Black Friday Edition Refurbs on sale at Nintendo Online Store

Crazy that these refurbs are higher than the new price they launched at.

Still a good deal.

I was bummed I missed them last year but I've changed my mind and want an XL so things worked out in the end.

Was there a Black Friday deal? Pretty sure they're usually $150 new. If they were less than $125 I regret missing out on that.

Sort of tempted to get one for Metroid, but I wouldn't play anything else on it.

They were 99 on black Friday. I think the only time they were available outside of a bundle

I have one, and nope.

Correct. These go pretty high on eBay and third party resellers. $125 is a great price for the best 3DS.

Comes with no charger though, remember.

Conversely, I have one, and have had the scratches. They're not as bad as the og 3ds but they're there.

Do the non-XL new 3DSes scratch the top screen when the close like the original 3DSes?

Yes, if under enough pressure. Carrying in a bag is probably fine, but my top screen got scratched at some point in my pocket likely because of how my pants tighten when I sit.

I got one of these last month for the same price on eBay in anticipation of Metroid: Samus Returns and also played through the Castlevania DS trilogy. Those are some of the best games I've ever played so if this is somebody's first time getting a 3DS don't ignore its backwards compatibility!

Man I wish these had been available when I got my 2DS. That mushroom faceplate is awesome... This is a really excellent deal though, especially considering the reputed quality of Nintendo's refurb products.

Amazon's had the Galaxy new XL at 175 for a while. Would go w/ that over the refurb version if interested in that model.

This is kind of a big deal. These things were near impossible to get brand new in the US. I got mine for $99 on black friday last year and I love it to death.

Aw, they don't have the Pokemon one. :(

Pretty sure the Pokemon part is just a face plate. Might be expensive if they were limited (then again maybe not if they were more widely available in other territories) but you should be able to just buy them separately.

Are the face plates the only thing that sets them apart? Do they have different model numbers?

Depends on which one. If it's the Pokemon Red/Blue ones, those were limited to a bundle (and for a short while on the Nintendo online shop) but there are blank ones you can buy and stickers to "replicate" them for cheaper. The blank ones are harder to come by nowadays though.

The Pokemon Green sprites one are pretty easy to find:

There's also the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire plates that aren't hard to find either:

Super Mystery Dungeon:

and some limited edition ORAS ones that were made out of felt that were bundle only in Japan.

If it's otherwise identical how worried are you about the model number? The face plates are meant to be swapped and the white and black bases are all identical.

That Pokemon sprite one is pretty neat, forgot Ultra Sun/ Moon are coming out soon. That's two games I'd play on one of these...

Prettiest handheld Ninty has ever released, IMO. Comfy as well, which is surprising for its shape. I got one hardly used for the same price earlier this year, and I'd say the price is worth it. Shame they were hardly pushed in America, and eventually discontinued.

Best version of this system in my opinion, jump on this if you want one.

Nintendo repairs, refurbs, and shop stuff in general is top quality. No regrets, except for the amount of money I've spent on faceplates.

Hmm, I've been waiting for a potential black Friday deal but most want a Red XL and those apparently have gone out of print. I'm feeling the $125 deal for the small ones, but I also like the XL size, maybe a bit more.

Does anyone have both, and can weigh in on which they recommend?

i got both and i think the regular new 3ds is the best way to go

What are the pros and cons over the XL in your opinion?

Edit:

BTW for context I have a black original 3DS which I stopped using after it got some pretty bad hinge screen scratches and a red og XL which has some minor ones and a somewhat creaky back hinge. Both of which I got at launch. Didn't play either from 2013 to earlier this year, as I recently got back into things with ALBW and very recently DQVIII.

Also, have you noticed any hinge caused screen scratches on either?

I may look into this. I have a 2DS. How do you transfer games? Do you have to contact Nintendo to have digital content (virtual console, downloadable games) transferred to the new 3DS?

From what I recall when I transferred my og 3DS to my og XL, their is a program/app on the system that can be found in the system settings to transfer stuff over. Their are a limited number of times you can do this though before you have to renew it by calling Nintendo I think.

you have to have both devices with you and on wifi to initiate the transfer on the old system (i think, it's been a long time since i've done it) I think the limitation is one transfer per week

personally i've been kind of conflicted on it. I have samus returns on pre-order but other than that I'm not sure what other upcoming games I would even play on it. I'm still using the old link between worlds XL

Good to know, thanks!

No problem, though it has literally been something like 5 years since I last transferred anything so my information could be very outdated. It shouldn't be too difficult to find an updated guide though.

Yeah if this new "one transfer per week" thing is right then my info is a bit out of date. I remember it being 5 for the lifetime of the "account".

My kid has an XL.

New 3DS if you want faceplates, Super Famicom colored buttons, the smaller screens (games look awful stretched out on the XL in my opinion), or prefer the form factor (smaller hands).

New 3DS XL if you think bigger is better and want a sweet LE. Still available in market. Bigger form factor. A little heavier and less portable unless you have enormous pockets or a bag of some sort for it, but it is basically the luxury version of the system.

New 2DS XL, same as the New 3DS XL but without 3D. This is the only system I haven't touched yet in the 3DS family, but it looks like it was specifically built to stand up to mild abuse better if you're a butterfingers or have kids using the system.

I prefer the New 3DS, but it really all depends on your own personal preference. It is worth noting that I have awful vision and can't process the 3D effect, so if my system ever dies and I can't find another New 3DS, I'd probably be okay with a New 2DS XL.

You just do the System Transfer from Settings. Easy peasy, you need a small screwdriver if you're going to upgrade the microSD card to a larger size. I didn't lose anything at all transferring from 3DS to New 3DS. Back up your SD card before you do the transfer is my recommendation, but Nintendo maintains the most recent step-by-step guides on their website.

I think they removed the once a week transfer limit, but once you go from a 3DS Classic to a New 3DS system, you can't transfer back to an older system, only to other New devices.

The only time you'd need to contact Nintendo to do the swap for you is if your original system is lost, stolen, sold, or irreversibly damaged. I haven't had to do this yet, but I think you can do it over the phone with the serial numbers of both consoles and a police report if it was reported stolen.
