Kamala Harris to Co-Sponsor Single Payer Healthcare

Zeus Molecules

illegal immigrants are stealing our air
Run on a platform concentrating on Single Payer Healthcare and legalizing Marijuana. After 4 years of Trump all people are going to care about short term is coping and recovering.

I was actually thinking the same thing.

Was at the Town Hall where she announced this today. She brought the house down when she dropped this bombshell. And I will be so hilariously biased if she runs in 2020 since I got to meet and take a picture with her.

Do it Dems if you want to motivate apathetic left wingers in this country to vote make it your parties singular goal to get single payer healthcare.

What are the chances this has with Dems in minority?

Right now, this is more of an act of symbolism, to show that the minority party actually has ideas and a vision.

This will only have weight if the GOP and their normalized terrorism is no longer a majority. And in order to do that, the vision of the Democratic party must be a vision people can believe in.

I think the "triforce" to do this is education reform, health care reform, and a minimum income. Many Americans support the first two on some level, but I believe we will still face failures if the third is off the table, though the Sanders-leaning folks like Bernie himself and Keith Ellison are in favor of it.

Complete the "triforce" and you begin to have an America that can adopt to the 21st century. Fail to do that and we continue swirling over an abyss, as this is what has allowed an orange con artist to have power in the very first place.

I love that we are moving on from the "access to" bullshit to "healthcare is a right."

The more people saying "Healthcare is a right" the better.

There is so much the government could achieve for the people if we stopped treating the lives of poor people as some kind of social engineering experiment.

Equal education is a right. Equal healthcare is a right.

Big changes can happen. When you have the opportunity to make a big change, you have to be ready with a plan.

It's great to see where politicians stand.

Eh, UHC at the state level isn't something that is feasible. This is entirely a Federal issue to tackle.

I imagine if you did a vote nationwide the numbers wouldn't be any better. People aren't going to like taxes going up, no matter how you explain it to them. People have employer health care and won't want to deal with how it changes.

What you need to do is what I believe this is, and what Obama fucked up by not pressing harder when Lieberman became a asshole. You need a public option as a stepping stone / gateway. Let people pay with their own money, get hooked on how cheap it is compared to other plans, the make it free with tax raises, which gets people a like for like swap.

Dems need a message. This is the first part of an eventual great three part message: health care for all, publicly funded higher education, and a livable minimum wage.

I'm excited to see Sanders' bill. More and more, it looks like the gold standard for the party going forward.

Democrats have a little over three years to build the party back up, win both houses of Congress and the presidency and get this done. Unlike the GOP's monstrosity this can all be done via reconciliation as well without any budget tricks.

We also need to focus on winning governorships and state legislatures for the states that have yet to expand Medicaid. Affordable Care Act is far from a perfect solution, but it would be a lot better if every state chose to implement the Medicaid expansion.

The Dems need to have a vision to oppose the GOP beyond being an opposition block.

This is perfect to get behind for a vision that represents the people.

Don't fuck this up, guys. :(

Time to stand for something instead of just against something.

Happy to have voted for her. Seems to really have her act together. But I'll be honest, her name always brings Miss Marvel to mind which is a plus imo.

Single payer is good, but she was advocating for making it a crime to be the parent of a truant student, kinda messed up imo

This is still a Bernie bill. And it got shit for being so when it was announced.

You don't come out with the perfect bill step one. Democrats have no power, this is exact the time to start looking at the pie in the sky options that will get whittled down and perfected later. You can't perfect something that gets dismissed at the ground floor.

People are weirdly so worried about this being the democrat's version of the republican repeal and replace even though the comparison makes no sense. The republican's entire philosophy about health care was a lie with "repeal and replace" when they really just wanted straight repeal. It's not a lie about what's politically feasible, it's a lie about their core policy goals.

This is closer to Obama running on public option and going with individual mandate. When it comes time to make it real, funding and taxes are going to be an issue that may be insurmountable, but there's plenty of space to move it to a public option instead and still fulfill much of the promise.

Well there was no reason for people to shit on it if they did

And even though Bernie is crafting it, it isn't going to be the same sort of bill he campaigned on in 2016. His 2016 bill essentially threw out the ACA and started from scratch. This won't do that.

I look forward to those opposed to Bernie's healtchcare plan to 180 and support Harris in full.

Genius. Forward-thinking. Humane.

Bernie?

Moronic. Pipe-dream. Not fiscally possible.

Cry more about mainstream Dems adopting leftist goals please. It just proves you don't actually give a shit about the policies and continue to live in a "us vs them" hellhole of your own creation.

I think our best chance in 2020 is to have a younger person who embraces progressive ideas, like Kamala is doing, endorsed by the older progressive guard of Bernie and Warren. Best chance to avoid fracturing the base.

They weren't complaining about Kamala adopting it. Probably more so complaining about how people were called purity testers if they wanted "mainstream" democrats to actually support bills like this.

You seem to be living in an "us vs. them" world yourself if this is how you took it.

You heard me. Your post reeks of desperation that the right person get "credit" for these goals.

Please point out those people who opposed his plan. Acknowledging it's not feasibly going to pass with a GOP held government isn't the same as saying it's a bad idea. Mainstream Dems supporting these policies is a good thing, and yet your trying to construe as Bernie supporters vs Democrats. Stop trying to pit people on the same fucking side against one another.

I'm not the one looking for the negative and pointing fingers when a mainstream Dem supports single-payer.

Single payer actually refers to it being one single body that pays for the healthcare. Its universal healthcare as in all our taxes go to a fund to pay for everything.

Im actually still not fully sure how Obamacare changed the structure but our system now is where healthcare is paid from a mix of public and private bodys. I think Obamacare added a basic fund that everyone could use?

the tl;dr part of it:

the american health care system basically has five major components

- employer-provided, private health insurance
- individual/family, private health insurance
- Medicare, public health insurance (65+ and disabilities)
- Medicaid, public health insurance (the poor, various stringent eligibility requirements) (e: this is referring to how it was prior to the ACA's expansion)
- Tricare/MHS, public health insurance (military & DoD)

the ACA expanded Medicaid (in participating states) to 138% of the federal poverty line, which gave roughly 15 million more people insurance

it also established exchanges on which private health insurance providers could sell individual policies, which account for the rest of the expansion of insurance

80 20 loss in CO. CA senate is not even voting on it. They have no idea what the real cost of this thing is. They have a president who will veto and a current house and congress that won't pass on it in the miracle that they do vote on it and the bill doesn't die on committee.

The guy who pulled it is a full-throttled single believer, but the Assembly bill was fairly lacking in specifics AND there are certain funding mechanisms the Assembly was trying to pretend didn't require a referendum on. So, yeah, it probably will pass in California. That's a really bad read of the CA Senate, and makes much more sense in California than in Colorado, where Prop 69 was lacking in many specifics and funding mechanisms.

Good on Kamala for supporting Conyers's bill. I'm glad she and Bernie came around to the right position eventually.

I don't think it's the Conyers bill though?

Seems like Bernie's bill will be its own thing, although obviously there will be similarities.

Hopefully it's genuine support...and not just an "elect me" in 2020 move (knowing the bill will fail now due to the Republican majority).

...although I still don't think you'll beat Trump with anything close to an establishment Democrat...even if they do use Sanders like policies.

I think Michael Moore is right. I really think you'll need either Tom Hanks or The Rock (or at least someone who is seen as anti-establishment to some degree ala Sanders) if you want to beat Trump. You'll need to fight fire with fire to take him down. Celeb vs Celeb, outsider vs outsider.

This is a... very bad idea.

Well, obviously Bernie had to water it down since he's part of the Democratic establishment.
Incidentally, went to a Keith Ellison town hall last night and someone, while ostensibly asking Keith a question made a point about how Bernie Sanders didn't belong in the Democratic Party before attacking Keith for supporting ranked choice voting.

Did not go over well!

Universal basic income would also be nice. It's inevitable, IMHO, so might as well start laying the groundwork for it now.

You should up your reading comprehension. The point of the post was razzing all the soon to be flip floppers on Single Payer cuz their new queen is on board.

I'm happy for Harris and Bernster. Her fans, especially if she didnt campaign on this???, are the ones I'm zinging as well as all the anti-Single Payer people that gave Bernie so much shit...but now they think it's cool.

Hit the books son. Your delusions are a waste of your time.
