Sonic Mania |OT| Dreams Come True

Sorry if this question is asked a lot. I've stayed out of the Sonic Mania thread so I don't spoil the game..

I heard that there were release issues with Sonic Mania on Switch, something about the start button messing up the game. I think I'd prefer to own it on Switch because of the portability, but I could get it on X1, PS4, or PC as well... I don't care about graphics and always play my switch in tablet mode, so is there one version that would be better?

I prefer mobility for a game like Sonic Mania, but I just don't know if that version is really busted or not, or waiting for a patch.

Thoughts?
Played it 100% on Switch and it was perfectly fine.

I only played a little bit of the game because I've been saving it for a trip, but the game when I played it did in fact have a ton of lag in accessing system menus when playing. I don't know why. It didn't break the system or anything, it was just mildly annoying. I hope it gets patched. Has it gotten patched?

I heard the fixes on the PC version are coming to Switch / other consoles so I would expect the menu bug to also be fixed at that time.

Anyone seen Sonic Retro's forum thread of them digging through the PC version of this game, some of the stuff found is interesting?

Even the Sonic Discovery logo is there before the game was named Mania

Edit: Sorry, but the Amy thing was fake, updated the pic with the correct version, but hey at least Hyper Sonic was considered

Amy would have been so cool. Hope that happens in the next game. A new playable character to go along with loads of new zones would be grand - would give a stronger sense of newness than Mania could reasonably achieve.

Playable Amy would be cool. They might as well go all the way with it and get some Chaotix and the Fighters cast playable too, lol.

The “Amy” thing is fake. The actual file for that has score number graphics where that edit says “Amy.”

The Hyper text is legit, though. Judging from Iizuka’s answer about Hyper Sonic at SDCC (basically, “the reason we don’t have Hyper Sonic in games anymore is because at some point you just feel like you have to keep escalating how super Sonic can get so we decided to just cut it off at Super”) I’m guessing SoJ had them can it.

This is probably for CPZ1, hopefully they can patch it in:

It's not busted, just slightly annoying. There's an extra half-second of lag before the home screen comes up, otherwise it's fine.

Holy shit at this Hydrocity easter egg

It replaces the rev up sound of the hand booster with the youtuber Dunkey's voice

That's disheartening if true. Dunkey is a piece of shit and all this does is taint an amazing game.

Even if they chose a non-sexist/racist/homiphobic youtuber, I still wouldn't like the reference. Sonic Mania shouldn't have anything in it that isn't either new, from an existing Sonic game, or a callback to a Sega classic like Shinobi.

I.....
I thought this was fake. It is real.

Also in checking this I just realized
in the Act 1 boss fight you can drop charges from the Eggmobile by press Down to get rid of Eggman's bombs. Doesn't do any damage to Eggman, but you can use it to ensure wou won't get hit while sucking up Eggman.

Hahah I just tested the easter egg.

I love Sonic, and I really enjoy Dunkey so this is all good with me.

I wish I could be an easter egg in a Sonic game though. So envious.

I just finished the story mode, I got mixed reactions.

I liked the return to Genesis Sonic physics style, I adored the "NEW" Zones.

I am mixed on the re-visited Zone though.

I liked their take on Green Hill, Chemical Plant but I hated their take on Hydro City and Flying Battery. I felt that some of the re-visits on old Zones were a total miss to the point that it did not add onto the original Zone but detracted from it.

I have an enjoyable experience when playing the original Flying Battery but I hated the re-visited version in Mania.

Boss fights were interestingly more challenging. Some were creatively fun, some were just a pain in the ass.

Not a fan of the Special Stage for the emeralds, too much fuckery when it comes to judging 3D space

Still, it is the closest genuine Sonic experience since 1994 and no GBA or 3D game ever touched

Immediately, I was ready to say Mania was flat out better than the older games. After a few playthroughs, I kind of prefer S&K's approach to level design. It seems like Mania sets the baseline path as the middle, and it's too easy to avoid the lower path. Then you only get 2 or 3 upper paths that quickly converge to the middle path again, opposed to the constant INCLINE in S&K, where the paths, in spite of pitfalls, tend to remain largely different and baseline with the bottom.

This formula is played with in both games and some levels in Mania are great and expand on this.

Stardust Speedway offers many paths, but like CD, they lack memorable enough setpieces to set them apart. Studiopolis does this to a lesser degree in the upper paths.

Also, Mania throws too many "Rush/Generations" moments where you have to react in a split second or have foresight to take a different path. Not a total fan.

I still prefer Mania overall because I don't really like Sonic 3 much, the disparity in perceived level design quality isn't gargantuan, and there's simply more content in Mania than S&K.

I'm sure my opinions and tastes will evolve the more I play Mania, but stuff like
Lava Reef
,
Chemical Plant
, and
Hydrocity
seem to play worse and there's a distinct lack of deviation in the paths in comparison. Maybe there's more merit to taking the low path than I thought or something. I'm a big fan of S&K -- it's pretty high on my goat list; so, I realize that any deviance from Yasuhara's influence in 1, 2, 3, &K will initially strike me as "off."

sonic CD special stages were terrible and I have no idea why they decided to homage them for the emeralds here. knuckles chaotix is what they should've based them on, but I'm assuming taxman went for CD's since he has the experience from making the last few sonic ports. real missed opportunity there IMO. I never felt like I was having fun or had decent control in these f-zero sloppy chases.

Source? When did Dunkey say straight up n*gger? That's fucked up if true.

There was a video of an archived stream Dunkey did where he called someone that word and then his girlfriend(?) called him out on it and he made a halfhearted apology. It was linked in a thread about Dunkey back in March I believe. He was already defending Jon Tron by then so it didn't change my perception of him much. Haven't been a fan of Dunkey every since I learned about stuff like that and I think it's a real shame he is present in any form in Mania. The game would be better if the Easter Egg was removed in it's entirety.

I honestly feel like Sonic CD's special stages are some of the easiest in the franchise and I quite enjoyed them. I really don't understand what the big deal is with them or these new UFO stages, which I love.

Just started this on PS4. Such a huge nostalgia rush. I especially smiled like a goon at the Studiopolis boss
LOVED Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine!

Yeah I always liked the Sonic CD and 3's bonus stages the most because they felt the most reasonable and well designed out of the bunch, on top of CD's being the easiest, so I was very glad they chose those two types for this.

chaotix' special stages just always resonated with me as being the coolest special stages in sonic, it was sort of a natural progression from sonic 2 that ended there IMO. I'd say sonic 3d blast on the Saturn and chaotix are where I would have taken the special stages for this game. but I guess the fact that only a really small amount of people have played those games led them to go with the sonic cd ones. it just doesn't make sense to me since those games had progressively better and impressive special stages but I'm sure a lot more people recognize the ufo thing from sonic cd so I get that they went with it.

if only more of u people had been 32x/Saturn people like my poor soul lol

Finally got the true ending. Garden press zone is amazing, as is Titanic Monarch zone. Lava reef zone has amazing music. They did a fantastic job.

I suspect they wanted to avoid doing another half-pipe or tube sort of special stage since those have been done the most (S2, Chaotix, 3D Blast on Saturn and PC, Pocket Adventure, Heroes, S4E2).

Despite the similarities, I also think Mania’s stages work way better than CD’s.

they don't feel very skill based to me. I think it was the 5th one in particular, I was annoyed so I looked up a video and in the guys video the ufo just randomly glitched and went backwards. I had lots of better runs than my successful ones where the ufo was just no where in sight. idk too much RNG for my tastes is my take on it.

It’s not RNG, the UFO just speeds up over time to make it harder to catch. Special stage 5 in particular has it speed up earlier relative to other stages, which is why it’s a pain in the ass. You have to get your Mach speed up as soon as possible and ignore the longer side routes to pull it off.

Your take on it is hilariously ignorant.

These special stages aren't even hard... I think I failed a combined total of 5 times before nabbing all 7 emeralds.

I think so too, they just "feel" better, not sure why. I still wish they went with the half pipe at least somewhere in the game because I miss it.

I haven't finished the last two stages yet, so if it comes up later disregard that.

Loving the game thus far. Have enjoyed all the remixed stages, especially Green Hill and Chemical Plant. The boss battles, while they could have been a little more difficult, are incredibly creative and enjoyable. This all feels like the logical progression from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and that's wonderful IMO.

Except for Oil Ocean, I never liked that stage in Sonic 2, and it's barely more bearable here. Act 2 is neat with the smoke effect though

Sonic Mania has the best... as in the easiest special stages.

You don't even need to cheese them like that one Youtuber does. Just learn how to cut corners and use shortcuts

I am placing giant rings in Debug mode but they are not taking me to the bonus stage (PS4). My friend has it on Switch and he says it works for him. What's the deal?

Nah. Easiest is CD. No memorisation or knowledge of the stage required whatsoever, and if you fuck up it doesn't even matter. Infinitely spawning blue UFO to get your time back.
