Media Create Sales: Week 34, 2017 (Aug 21 - Aug 27)

Thats why they moved to PS4
It's a port with no new content of a 6 month old 3DS game which was already an expansion to a weird expansion/sequel.
Probably would've done well as a launch title which it should've been or at least before MHW's announcement.

[PS4] [PSV] [NSW] Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon # <RPG> (Koei Tecmo) - 30%

30% seems low, but I don't recall how the first game debuted.

It will be interesting to see how the Switch performs.

It does in some sense; Capcom long ago sensed that the appetite for Monster Hunter in Japan was waning so they went with the choice best likely to capture an expanded audience in the West.

Trying to expand the audience makes sense, but using MHXX Swtich as the reason for World being on the PS4 is nonsensical. Also, I'm not sure there is much reason to believe that interest in the series is waning in Japan.

It worked with the PS2 lol. It kinda makes me wonder what would've happened if Persona 5 stayed PS3 exclusive.

This doesn't make any sense.
Switch ≠ 3DS they likely bet early on

It did well for such a game but Capcom is aiming higher (of course :p)

Atlus "let's keep working on 3DS" strategy it's not working so far.
Next bomba: Shin Megami Tensei.

Practically every Nintendo 3DS release is performing way worse than it would have performed just 1 or 2 years ago, we have the recent example of Great Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2. They probably didn't expect sales to slow down that much. I can't blame them about this, but yes about the missing opportunity with Nintendo Switch launch. Those that at least released anything like Konami got rewarded.

It does in some sense; Capcom long ago sensed that the appetite for Monster Hunter in Japan was waning so they went with the choice best likely to capture an expanded audience in the West.

Capcom itself is the main reason for MH interest wanning lol.

MHW announcement before XX Switch release.

XX existence when they promised that there will be no new expansion form.

Releasing Switch version later which end up underperforming.

Blaming MH on Jp fans not being interested on new MH is as clueless as Capcom lol.

It's a port with no new content of a 6 month old 3DS game which was already an expansion to a weird expansion/sequel.
Probably would've done well as a launch title which it should've been or at least before MHW's announcement.

Which is now on a platform that same audience will eventually upgrade to. If you already own it on 3DS at this point, there's no reason for you to double dip because you're not getting anything new if you already spent hundreds of hours playing it there. It definitely should have launched along side the console.

Everyone who rarely visits the Media Create threads knows the truth that Media Create are bias Nintendo fanboys.
Everyone who visits Media Create threads knows the truth about users who rarely visit that make uninformed, drive by troll posts.

It's always funny how you don't see all these drive by complainers discussing things that may interest them. Perhaps they could make some charts and spend hours databasing information. Or part take in a rational discussion.

MHXX is a HD rerelease of a remaster of a spinoff of a 3DS game.

Pretty sure KT was being sarcastic.

Yeah, it was sarcasm, there is no way a reputable analytics company used by most all the publishers here would seed false information because of some sort of favoritism. People who think they would have a warped sense of reality.

After sinobi, Media Create also believes Monster Hunter World announcement made a certain number of players waiting for it and affected Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. sales. That's the end of the story of "it had no impact".
Sinobi and Media Create are also just taking guesses like anyone else on that subject. No one can know for sure how it would have sold in comparison if MHW wasnt announced.

I think everyone would agree that it could have some impact, but i still have the opinion that being a port of a more recent release, and that recent release being an extended version as well (i.e, not being a brand new release) are the main reasons for the lower interest. Switch lower installbase isnt exactly doing it any favor either (although i dont think this is a very important factor).

Maybe they hold some kind of surveys, ans they probably have some feedback from retailers about consumers' reception of a product. This is a guess, but an educated one, isn't it?

Yeah, its possible that they have done some surveying and also got some anecdotal evidence on it. I also dont know if the specify how much impact they think it had on the sales, but i get the impression that they think it had a bigger and noticeable impact. I just wanted to say that its not a key answer to the situation since its hard to prove how big of an impact it actually had either way. I do agree that its likely that several of people dropped buying it because of MHW, but if it had a big and noticeable impact, i'm sceptical to that. I think the other factors i mentioned above is the biggest hold back for the sales.

Sinobi and Media Create are also just taking guesses like anyone else on that subject. No one can know for sure how it would have sold in comparison if MHW wasnt announced.

Maybe Famitsu and Media Create with access to preorders and surveys are far more informed than random NeoGAF posters and aren't just taking guesses like anyone else on that subject.

Yep, that is possible. It still doesnt say anything specifically about how much it affected the sales though, so how much it affected the sales is based on guessing. I mostly just wanted to say that its not a key answer that necessarily ends all discussion around the subject.

For those who insisted all the time there is no audience overlap between MHXX and MHW it's the end of discussion.

Ah ok, then i understand. To that point i fully agree :)

Speaking of surveying, is there any more info regarding this? Do stores in Japan usually ask the consumers around pre-orderings and purchases being done? Maybe its more common for online stores? I know that some asks for reviews/rating of the products being bought.

What are you referring to? Have anyone said that there absoultely zero overlapping between two Monster Hunter games? I really doubt that. Fans of the serie would be interested in several of games.
I didn't read every single post but yes I have seen people ignoring the fact that MHW exists.

3DS underperforming time and time again is really not a surprise to me. Do developers really think it's going to be viable to release new software on it for many more years? How many new games in 2019 and 2020 do you think will be profitable on it, maybe 1/10th of the ones released, if that? Then again, I guess people are still releasing on Vita, and that'll probably continue as well, but at least the Vita feels a good generation ahead of the 3DS, though even the Vita feels quite obsolete hardware wise now, it's time to move on. Good luck trying to sell your Vita games in the West too, even the 3DS is on life support there.

And why in the world would you release for solely 3DS and not 3DS/Switch? I'd be willing to bet any of these underperforming games released on just 3DS would have sold more than double with a dual release. Sometimes I really just don't get it I guess.

And another Rayark game on Nintendo Switch. Flyhigh Works are bringing Deemo this time, out in September. Guess they're going to run out of games to port soon, but at least that shows the games are doing well I guess?

Also announced the following games (mostly localisation):

SteamWorld Dig 2 - October
Picontier - Playable at TGS
Golf Story - Fall 2017
Splasher - Fall 2017
Opus: The Day we Found Earth - Fall 2017
Teslagrad - 2017

All this was announced during their Totally Not Nintendo Direct I Swear "Flyhigh Express".

How much impact can MHW really have if there is only a 25% overlap between home and hand held MH players. Unless of course we no longer believe MHW is going to bomb. 25% more sales takes us to ~100k. Would the narrative really change about MHXX performance on switch with that sales difference?

Also speaking of Media create blurbs we can't get selective when we choose to take them as gospel. How many times have they said a PS4 release was supply constrained or PS4 supply was low and the "regulars" refute them?

What does being a "generation ahead" have to do with profitability?

They are not ignoring it, they just don't see it as the main reason for XX underperforming. As for the reasons, in terms of importance i see it like this.

1. It's a port of a game that most people who were interested in already got the 3DS version.

2. People who own Switch right now are not interested for games like MH (that's why i will not be surprised to see the game having decent legs in the future, as more people will be buying Switch)

3. MHW

lol maybe next time they should probably announce this stream properly. Only 364 views on YouTube.

As for Rayark, Deemo was awesome. It was already ported to Vita, but since VOEZ also contains songs from Deemo, I didn't think they'd port this game to Switch too. I guess we can now expect Cytus sometime on Switch too.

I mean yeah, at the end of the day we're maybe talking the difference between a debut of 95K versus 150K.

But to deny that announcing and heavily advertising the next mainline, brand new game in the series has no impact on a port to a system not getting that next mainline game seems kind of nonsensical.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Atlus "let's keep working on 3DS" strategy it's not working so far.
Next bomba: Shin Megami Tensei.

I dont know if i would call them bombas...the expectations for these releases cant be that high. As long as they can get the hardcore fans to double dip its probably already worth the port.

Those arent money maker releases but release schedule filler. But i gotta be honest...why are they remastering/remaking games that can already played on a 3DS via VC - while there is still no way to play games like P4 Golden or P3 on current systems.

P4 Golden for Steam/PS/XBO/Switch, followed by a P3 Remake is such a no brainer. Hell re-release Catherine for current-gen systems as well.

I dont understand why a company would leave that much money on the table. For all stupid shit Capcom does....at least they realize how easy it is to make money with their Remasters on digital marketplaces. P4Golden for 20-30 bucks on all systems is a easy mioseller if it was able to sell that much on Vita.

MHXX Switch and MH World obviously have a much higher degree of crossover than say MH4 and MHWorld because as a remaster of an existing game and a console game respectively the main audience will be the hardcore MH audience and not the wider audience.

Clearly the existing Monster Hunter userbase isn't on the Switch- Capcom made sure of that. But I'd dispute the argument that there is something inherent in the Switch userbase not interested in a game like MH. I mean- Switch is selling because of Splatoon 2, not Wii Sports.

Clearly Salmon Run is the new owner of the Co-op action game crown.
