Malaysian Government blanket-blocks Steam via DNS over Jesus & Buddha fighting game

It's another "why do you even give a shit" scenario the government like to pull. Watch them spin this into them being the one doing a service to the people.

I'm kind of surprised that making fun of the other gods would be banned.

I wonder if that anime where Jesus hangs out with Buddha in Japan is banned as well. :p

They really blocked it didn't they?

I'm sorry Malaysians, I tried really hard to like the country, but FUCK THIS so hard. FUCKING c*&#*.

Friend of mine in Malaysia says he isn't affected yet, but is anxious for tomorrow.

Though as one article on LowYat notes, Steam's had Smite for years. Guess Jesus might have been the tipping point? Since he's a Prophet even in Islam.

So very confused by this.

Yeah, now I'm afraid to restart my PC/router lol. Just got new 1080ti's and I want to buy some games.

But I guess you could just use Google DNS? I'm seeing some people say that works...no need to use any VPNs.

so what now?

I have to use a VPN to play my games. For Christ's sakes.

Offline mode should work. Some games require online mode being active, so, yeah, they require VPN, as well as activating games with DRM.

Interestingly, it's still possible to download/install games, but the EULA pop-up shows an error - the downloads aren't caught be the DNS block, but the EULA pages are.

My router's got Google DNS settings, and I'm affected. Do I have to add them to Windows Internet Config as well?

lmao sorry I just find it hilarious that OP is having trouble connecting to Steam and his first assumption is his government is responsible.

Is free democracy really in that much strife in the Asian Isles? I know Duterte is a massive cunt in the Philippines but jesus.

lol in the Philippines there's no side, it's why I'm laughing at people thinking it's all about the good and bad, I'm actually laughing at people here siding at the people against Duterte when they too are also massive greedy, inhuman assholes

this country is a banana republic with everyone having own interests and stakes, never view this place with american politics

They should ban the game not the entire Steam store page, i mean, obvioulsy if you are gonna make and release a game about gods fighting each other you will be face a lot of criticism and censorship in some countries.

Kinda worried when the gov start paying attention to video games and cracking down on it.
Can you imagine if they ban that new God Of War?

That makes no sense whatsoever. Why would they remove the game instead of just geographically blocking it from Malaysia only?

Which is what the Malaysian government want:
Earlier today, it was reported that the MCMC has contacted Valve and requested that Fight of Gods be geoblocked for Malaysians within the next 24 hours, or risk further action being taken

Wait, something like one silly game causes a government to shut down a whole service that is critical to a whole industry? How is that justifiable? What will happen even if people play that game? Try to overthrow the government? Seems like a petty move if you ask me.

Well.... Turkey shut down twitter, instagram and facebook for some users, youtube for some videos in the past and now wikipedia is blocked since like 6 months now... -for a few articles- There are other countries doing this kind of things too...

It's worth a try. I don't use it cause it makes my connection turn to shit, but Unifi users might have better luck.

I can confirm that it's blocked on my phone (Celcom)

Nope, no luck.

Ah, well... bed times for me. I meant to go to bed an hour ago. :(

Maybe will be sorted when I get up.

Hate the government, not the people.

I don't hate the people... but its actually really hard for me to live in the country area especially after living in a big city in Australia. Just so many differences at my age. I suppose that's a story for another time.

Malaysia's banning of websites and internet services are largely an inconsistent shitshow to begin with.

Like, a porn site that is banned yesterday could easily be accessible the next day, and then down again and up again.

Why don't they just remove it from the Malaysian store page if local laws don't permit the game? I can't buy Typing of the Dead on Steam from Germany for example.

The last thing to expect from the Malaysian government on a religious matter... is a rational and level-headed response.

I think this hurt the Malaysian government's feelings more than it hurt any Buddhists or Christians feelings.

They should just remove the game from the Malaysian store. This happens all the time in Australia and Germany.
Knowing our government, I'm guessing they just screwed up the request form / communication to Valve due to poor English.

Hahaha this is incredible.

Fortunately this can be easily circumvented by using Google DNS.

Screwed up the request form? They probably don't know you can do it in the first place ;)

that puzzling face
As self-deprecating as it sounds, the Malaysian market share is barely a blip on the radar so I wouldn't be surprised if the request was shuffled in a low priority list somewhere.

Or rather, a one day notification is too short for Steam Support.

My router and my Windows internet connection settings both have Google DNS, but I still can't acess Steam. It seems to only work for some people.

(Honestly going to bed now. :p )

3rd Corinthians 2:11 - I shall game in greener pastures, and shall want for nothing. Especially totino's pizza rolls.

Quran 115:6 - Let no man be without his daily PUBG NeoGAF thread, and let joy overcome those who game without limits.

Seems pretty clear to me... 🤔

They blocked the entire store for the time being with a request to block the game.

I suppose Gabe will probably just block the game and things will be back to normal soon (hopefully).

Blocking the entire store is a dick move though, I'm still incredibly mad.

Couldn't the Malaysian government just ask Steam to block sales of that single game in that country? Like how it happens with some games blocked in Germany/Australia?

Did they have to block an entire service?

EDIT: As the Gaffers said above.

Knowing them they did not know how to request that from Steam.
